THE SPIRIT OF ORIENTEERING

SARA LEANED BACK in her rickety chair, but quickly straightened as the chair wobbled. The Blomma space station monthly orienteering competition was well underway.

She loved orienteering. It was exhilarating to look at the 3D map, locate the next checkpoint, and find the quickest way to it. All the while, running as fast as she could, but not too fast because then she’d be too tired for the strategic decisions and make dumb mistakes.

According to lore, orienteering had already been a sport on ancient Earth, making it one of the oldest sports still in practice.

Of course, in those days, orienteering was practiced solely on a planet, leaving the three-dimensional aspect out of it. She’d always wondered how that would feel, but she’d never been off the space station.
