    About the Author

    Introduction

It all started in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Born into a blue-collar military family, father a Dominican soldier, and an amazing, beautiful, talented Indian and African American daughter of a music icon whose voice and body were larger than life. When I say larger than life, I literally mean five hundred pounds. So genetically, you already know the challenges I've had to endure with my health and weight. It was not until I realized that everything I felt my body was feeling, good and bad. You see, we are what we eat. Growing up in beauty pageants, the confidence was always there, and having all siblings be brothers and being an army brat, I've always been competitive, not knowing that I would one day deal with the insecurities of just simply being overweight or big-boned. However, what people perceive you to be is not what you and who you think you are.

Growing up as a child, I never realized that your health is your wealth until I graduated high school and moved to Los Angeles, California. The big city of dreams. I was granted a partial scholarship to AMDA (American Musical and Dramatic Academy) at the New York campus. Once I received my final acceptance letter, I called my grandfather and asked him for the balance of my tuition to attend AMDA. I later realized I wouldn't have any family there in New York, so I quickly called him back and said, Hey, grandpa, I'll go there and help you move in, and I'll go to school in Calabasas. It's only a twenty-minute drive from Hollywood. He agreed; however, he didn't agree to pay the tuition to AMDA. He preferred for me to attend a state university to receive my bachelor's degree in communications and tour with him instead of going to school for music and acting. This was because he felt like that was a genetic gift that I would be able to develop as I toured the world with him. He always told me, It's nothing like ‘boots on the ground' training. Do you want to be in entertainment? Well, here you go!

Within three months, I graduated high school. I was in Europe on tour on the road, singing, doing what I loved to do. Meanwhile, I was in college as well. It was a huge transition and a lot to handle. I was able to manage it all with the help of my family members, my tutor, and so much support from my mom and grandparents. My grandfather's tour manager Jane would always say, Sophia, you're brilliant, you're beautiful, you can do all things you can do. Both of us were always on the go, out of the country for months at a time. I learned so much about health just simply being on the road with my grandfather. Imagine being five hundred pounds and having to travel every day to a new country or a new city, sometimes by airplane, sometimes tour buses, but always the best of everything that still didn't matter. I'm sure he was uncomfortable most of the time.

The moment I became his assistant, it completely changed my perception. And what I desired to do was to not only sing and heal and entertain the world but to be healthy myself and continue to help those in my family dealing with weight issues, insecurities, and low self-esteem. Although my grandfather had no issues with those, I knew he would have much rather been half his weight simply so he could drive, get up and go to the bathroom on his own, and do the simple things that we all do daily but take for granted. While helping my grandfather, I had an epiphany. I knew I wanted to help heal the world through health, fitness, and nutrition. You see, I traveled the world singing professional background with my grandfather and other famous singers such as Joss Stone, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and toured with the pioneers of music. I was in a different country every day and never had energy. I realized that I had to do something about what I was putting into
