Philly J Lay

Philly J Lay is a long-standing advocate for our health and that of our planet. After a near death experience and years of grief, resulting in a range of chronic illnesses, she discovered personalised natural medicine and the associated miracles of the body and power of the mind. In her first book, The Natural Wellness Journal, Philly gently guides you through over 50 techniques that she used on her own self-healing path, including those she has chosen to train in, EFT/Matrix Reimprinting and SOMA breathwork. She is training with Infinite Breath in the art of writing effective breathwork meditations, some of which are included in this Journal and on her social channels @phillyjlay. Philly is passionate in her belief that everything is connected and that when we learn to heal ourselves, it will help to heal this beautiful world.

not be alive now. Both of you have brought such joy to my

life. Our journey has had its ups and downs, but I thank

you from the depths of my heart for the love we have.

To Sassy. No child should ever be expected to do what you

have done to help my road to recovery. Bless you.

To Taly. I am in awe of your huge heart. Bless you for your tireless

support on this book. It would not be published without you.

    MY JOURNEY

    40157.png

To begin the process of ‘change’ that I needed to achieve a state of ‘normal’ health, I started my journey through diet. Although this had great effects, it soon became clear to me that there was so much more to complete wellness and that I had to go back and revisit my childhood.

I was put on my first ‘controlled diet’ at ten years old in preparation to audition for Ballet Schools and duly left home in September 1975 to train as a classical dancer. As you can imagine, it is part of the gig to hate your body, to be endlessly dieting and I have tried just about every diet on the planet over the last forty-six years. Low fat, no carbs, calorie -counting, cabbage soup… The list goes on. However, I found it virtually impossible to stabilise my weight, which was continually fluctuating from ‘large’ to borderline anorexic or bulimic. My relationship with food, and myself, has been a challenge. In the discipline of classical ballet, you are never enough.

I had my first big emotional traumas in my 20’s with the death of my father and brother. They were eased, I thought, by alcohol. However, in September 2013, my life was rocked when my sister, Tricia, died quite quickly from motor neuron disease. Along with my mother, she had nurtured me through my early years and, after her death, I threw myself full throttle into food and wine. The weight piled on and a previous back injury started to rear its ugly head again as I struggled to walk. By February 2014, I needed a spinal fusion.

I can still hear the scream as they brought me round. They had missed my spine with the anaesthetic. It was in me somewhere, just not in my spine. The agony of the metal cage and the cut nerves and muscles penetrated right down into my core. I could hear the panic in the voices around me as they could not give me any more medication without killing me. My body shut down. I just went away from the world to hide, unable to deal with the pain. My family were not allowed to see me. I wouldn’t have known they were there anyway.

I was not saved that day by a surgeon, but by the Registrar of the hospital, who stayed by my bed and kept telling me to find my ‘happy place.’ ‘Come on, Pippa, find your happy place. Where is your happy place? Let’s go to your happy place.’ Twenty-four hours later, I had not been able to do that, so my husband Danny was called to bring our daughters to see me, presumably to say goodbye. They were my ‘happy place.’ Theirs was the only love that could have brought me round that day.

Most of that spring and early summer, I stayed alone in my bedroom, weight piling on, PTSD engulfing me. Sundays were a welcome relief when my sister, Bud, brought our eighty-nine year old mum over for dinner and to take me for a walk around the garden. I held her Zimmer frame and we stopped every few minutes
