    ~Chapter One~

Lucas stared at Adele and Daisy. Lifting his glass he downed the contents and took a deep breath. This is what she was holding back all this time? What was going on? He was usually a logical thinker but this couldn’t be explained by logic. Sitting there he was waiting for Daisy to speak and looking at Adele as he tried to make sense of it. Adele stood smiling at them. Daisy, I think your hot tamale is in shock. She looked at Lucas. Honey, I think you need something stronger. Daisy felt a lump in her throat and couldn’t speak. Now that it was out, though not the way she wanted, she was speechless. Her insides were shaking and her heart was beating fast.

Adele looked at them again and sighed. Oh for goodness sake. Lucas, you aren’t crazy, I’m a ghost and Daisy can see and talk to me. Listen handsome, Daisy’s a good person and now she’s very worried about how you’ll react. She was about to tell you herself, right at this moment. Unfortunately,I popped in as I tend to do, at the wrong time. She turned to Daisy. I’m so sorry. Lucas looked from Adele to Daisy. He didn’t know what to say because a ghost was talking to him and he was listening to her. So he just sat there, waiting for Daisy to speak and explain further. She looked horrified.

Daisy looked at them and took a big sip of her champagne. Taking a deep breath she sighed. It was now or never. Lucas was either going to call her crazy, a freak, and leave, or he would understand. She smiled at Adele. She didn’t blame her for popping in as she had been thinking of her and forgot to put her shields up in her mind. Now it was out and Daisy had to say something. She turned to Lucas taking his hand, hoping he wouldn’t pull away. Lucas felt her hand in his and looked into her eyes. Please explain what is going on. I think I’m going crazy. Daisy felt a little comforted that he didn’t pull away and began to explain. Lucas, you aren’t going crazy, I promise you that. I will tell you all about it, just let me finish before you speak.

Sighing, she started from the beginning. When I first met you I had no clue about any of this. Then, that day, when we met at the hotel, Adele appeared before me. I thought I had lost my mind too, and then I spoke to Gram. It turns out that I come from a long line of people who have gifts. Mine happened to appear when I met Adele. Now, more gifts have come out as the months have passed. I was afraid to tell you all of this because I didn’t want you to think I was crazy or a freak. There were so many times I wanted to tell you. I decided to have your event first as I wanted it to be wonderful, which it was.

She quickly looked at Adele. She was right. I was just about to tell you when she popped in. Please believe me when I say that it made me so upset to keep this from you. I went over and over in my mind how to tell you. I don’t know how you feel about me and us, now that my secret is out, but know that I love you. I never intentionally hid this from you. I was just really worried about your reaction, and I was also learning the trade so to speak. This is still relatively new to me. If your feelings have changed for me in any way, I will understand. You may not want to accept this part of me but it’s who I am now and I can’t give it up. I just found it. There’s so much more to say, but at least now you know what I’ve held back. Adele is wonderful, by the way, and I recently solved her murder. That’s for another time though. Just so you know, Gram has gifts too. That weekend when I went to see her? We performed a seance and found out who murdered Adele. There is so much more to say, Lucas. I really hope you don’t hate me or get me fired now that you know the truth. I couldn’t bear to lose you and my job. Well, that’s about it. At least the main gist of it.

Daisy sat there, tears threatening to fall, and lowered her head. Lucas listened as she explained, leaning back as he looked at her. His hand in his pocket, he touched the box that held the ring he was about to give her. Now he had all this new information to process before he did. She had kept this from him for months and that hurt a bit. He opened up to her when he had heard the ghostly voice in this very hotel. That would have been the right time to tell him about her gifts. Still, he now knew that she had been afraid of his reaction. It just bothered him that she didn’t trust him enough to understand. He swore that if he ever met her ex, Jason, he was going to punch him in the face for making Daisy doubt herself so much that she held back something this important.

Standing up, Daisy looked at Lucas and got up. She had no idea what he was thinking and just couldn’t bear to hear him say he no longer wanted her. Lucas sat there, thinking about all of this, trying to put things in perspective when he saw her stand up. He was about to say something but she held her hand up. Lucas, I can’t do this tonight. I’m sorry if you’re upset and shocked but I have to leave. Daisy turned away as Lucas went to grab her hand and walked as fast as she could out the door, tears falling down her face. It was over. She just knew it. Her heart would never recover. Lucas stood up to go after her and saw she was gone. He had to talk to her and let her know how he felt. As he turned around he saw Adele shaking her head as she faded out. He sat back down, and leaned back, thinking. No matter what Daisy thought, this was far from over.

When she arrived home, Daisy realized that Katie hadn’t returned yet. She quickly changed and packed an overnight bag to take with her. Adele shimmered in as she was packing. Where are you going? What are you doing? Daisy looked at her, tears staining her face. I’m leaving. Going to Grams for the rest of the weekend. I can’t face him, Adele. He’s going to break up with me. I thought he would accept me as he said he loved me but I don’t think he will be able to. He’s a good man and I just can’t hear him say goodbye yet. My heart is going to break into pieces. I have to get out of here. Daisy went into the kitchen as Adele followed and wrote a note to Katie telling her she was at Grams. As she left, Adele called after her. Daisy, don’t give up on him yet. He loves you. I know he does. Don’t let him go. He’s the one for you!

Adele sighed as another shimmer appeared. She smiled when she saw him. Hi handsome, what brings you here? Edwin smiled back at her and took her hand. Ghosts can touch each other just like humans. Adele looked up at him sadly. She left Edwin. Daisy isn’t giving Lucas a chance. What are we going to do? He loves her and she loves him. I’m so upset. Edwin opened his arms and held her as he put his chin on her head. My sweet Adele. We’re going to let things evolve as they have to. If we found each other again and worked things out, they would too. Let’s go make love. We have a few centuries to catch up to. Adele smiled as she kissed his lips. I love you Edwin, always and forever. He smiled as they faded out together.

Daisy arrived at Gram’s home at two in the morning. Nina was waiting for her. She knew something was going to happen and as the day went on the feeling got stronger. So she wasn’t surprised when Daisy called saying she was coming. In fact, she made a huge pot of chamomile tea and baked brownies and cookies knowing it was going to be a long night. When she saw the headlights of the car pulling into the driveway she went out to see Daisy walking over with her luggage. The minute she got closer, the tears fell, and Gram hugged her tightly, soothing her by caressing her back. It’s okay my sweet girl. Everything is going to be okay. Daisy looked at her, tears falling down her cheeks. I don’t know Gram. It’s such a big mess and I had to get out of there. What am I going to do? Nina held her tightly and let her go holding her hands, smiling at her. Well, my love, we are going to go inside, have some tea and home-baked cookies and brownies. Then you are going to tell me everything that happened. I love you, Daisy. It’s going to be alright.

At the kitchen table, Daisy sat as Gram handed her a cup of tea and placed the sweets in front of her. Daisy felt like she couldn’t breathe, and the tears wouldn’t stop. If only Adele hadn’t popped in that way. She would have had time to break it to Lucas gently and then have him meet her officially. Maybe running away wasn’t the most grown-up thing to do but she just needed to have some space and time to think. If Lucas no longer wanted her then she needed to hear him say it but right now she couldn’t. Gram sat down next to her and patted her hand. Okay, dear. Tell me what happened. Dry your eyes, and take a few deep breaths.

Dabbing at her eyes, she slowly sipped her tea. Daisy took a deep breath and told her everything. When she was done, she took a brownie and bit into it even though she wasn’t hungry. Gram sat back with her cup and looked at her. She knew it was time to let her know she met Lucas but not to tell her why. This young man loved her granddaughter and they both needed time to adjust. Patting her hand, Gram looked into her eyes. Daisy, I have to tell you something. I met your Lucas a few weeks ago. He said he was here meeting with a new writer and stopped by to introduce himself. He asked me not to mention it as you wanted to bring him yourself. I hope you aren’t upset.

Daisy put her cup down and looked at her grandmother. Why would he not want it mentioned? Yes, she was excited to have him meet Gram but he could have told her. Something wasn’t right. She should be angry with him but she wasn’t. She just wanted him to say it didn’t matter that she was gifted and that he loved her anyway. Gram, I can’t even get upset because I hurt so much inside. What did Lucas and you talk about?

Nina smiled brightly at her. Well, you mostly. He wanted to know more about you and me. We got to know each other and he even helped mow my lawn. That man is not afraid of hard work, even in a suit. You really have a wonderful mate. I liked him immediately. Daisy teared up and wiped at her eyes. I like him too Gram, but I don’t know if he can truly accept me. If Adele hadn’t popped in and shocked him maybe it would have been different, I don’t know. I don’t blame her, I know she meant well. I was so happy tonight and now this happened. You know, I felt like something was going to occur. I had this feeling for days. Just didn’t expect it to be this.

Gram nodded and took a cookie. Well, to be honest, I had a similar feeling that something was going to occur. I still can’t believe Adele is back. How did that happen? Daisy shrugged her shoulders. To be honest, I don’t know. Katie saw her first in the ladies room but I didn’t see her until she appeared to Lucas and me. Oh, this a horrible mess. If he breaks up with me, my heart will never be the same. Gram leaned over and hugged her.

She pulled back and looked at her. You listen to me, Daisy Olivia Sinclair. I believe that man loves you. You need to face him and straighten this out. In the event it doesn’t work out, you will be alright. He will be the one who loses out. Do you understand my girl? You’re special Daisy and not because of your gifts, but because of all the love you have inside you. You sparkle like the brightest star and if Lucas turns out to be a fool then so be it. I don’t think that will be the case though. I got some strong vibes from him and he is deeply in love. With that said, you go get some rest. Tomorrow we’ll talk more and everything will look better in the morning. It’s going to be alright. You’ll see my sweet girl. She smiled at her grandmother and stood up hugging her tightly. I hope so, I really hope so.

Daisy kissed her and went into her bedroom to get undressed, not bothering to look at her phone. She didn’t want to see that Lucas hadn’t texted or called. After she washed up, she got into bed and said a silent prayer to the gods and goddesses that everything would work out the way it should. Wiping tears from her eyes she fell into a deep, exhausted sleep. She tossed and turned and saw herself at a big party. It looked like someone was getting engaged and she saw strangers walking around drinking, and talking. As she got further into the dream, she heard her name being called.

Turning she saw the one person who she never wanted to see again. Her ex-boyfriend Jason Andrews. He walked over to her smiling with a woman on his arm. As the dream faded, Daisy jumped up gasping for air with her heart racing. She got out of bed and went to the bathroom to put cold water on her face. She looked into the mirror. Okay, get a grip. It could just be a dream. A horrible dream and you’re upset over Lucas. Daisy took a few deep breaths and walked to her bed. Lying back down she closed her eyes. What if it wasn’t a dream but another premonition? Who was that woman with him and why was she even at this party? She put shields up to close her mind off and finally fell asleep, no more dreams plaguing her.

Sunday she woke up feeling exhausted. As she looked around the room, she remembered last night. Groaning she sat up and stretched. She felt drained and knew a few mugs of coffee were in order. She had to tell Gram about the dream and figure out how to deal with Lucas. Daisy knew that she needed to handle this like an adult but not yet. After taking a quick shower and getting dressed she walked into the kitchen to see her sitting at the table reading. Looking up she smiled. How are you feeling today love? You look tired. I made breakfast and put a plate in the oven to keep warm. There is hot coffee as you look like you need some. Didn’t you sleep at all?

Daisy gave her a kiss and went to get a mug of coffee. She took the plate of food from the oven and set it down on the table. After mixing her coffee and taking a sip she sat back. Looking at the food she pushed the plate aside. Gram, I had a bad night. I cried myself to sleep over Lucas and had a dream, which I hope isn’t a premonition. I have enough on my plate with how to talk to him and I haven’t even gotten up the courage to look at my phone to see if he has tried to contact me. I’m a mess Gram, a horrible mess. I don’t blame Lucas if he wants to break up with me.

Nina put down her book and looked at her. I know you’re feeling sad and worried about how this will turn out but you can’t allow it to consume you. You aren’t a mess and you are very lovable, so anyone who falls in love with you is one lucky man. Daisy, I never told anyone this but your grandfather and I broke up for a few weeks. Daisy almost spit out her coffee. Really? Why? What happened? Gram took a sip of coffee and leaned back. We had been together around six or so months and Gregory wanted to marry me. I wanted to tell him about my gifts but my mother said not to as he wouldn’t want to know. Anyhow, we were at this fair in town riding the Ferris wheel. We were young you have to understand. Well, he proposed to me way up there and I said no.

She looked up in thought then back at Daisy. When we came down, he was so angry he stomped off and I went to go after him. We had an argument and he took me home. I walked straight into the house and refused to speak to him. I know it was silly and believe me I wanted to say yes to him but I needed to tell him first. My mother came into my room and I told her what happened. She said I should have accepted and I told her that the only way I would marry him was if he knew about my gifts. You see, I wanted to start the marriage off right, with no secrets between us. I loved your grandfather and I knew he was the one. For two weeks, Gregory and I didn’t speak but fate wouldn’t allow that. One day I decided to take a ride as we had horses back then in our stables. I was taking a rest at the place where Greg and I used to meet and must have fallen asleep. I woke up to see my Gregory standing over me with a picnic basket and flowers. Right then and there I went to him and well one thing led to another. She smiled brightly.

Daisy looked away. Nina smiled at her. Oh don’t flush, we were young and in love. Anyway, as we were basking in the glow, I told him about my gifts. Do you know what he did? Daisy nodded as she couldn’t wait to hear. Gram laughed and her eyes sparkled. He got up, went to the picnic basket, and handed me a cupcake. I thought he lost his mind. I didn’t want a cupcake, I wanted him to say something. I was about to tell him that when I looked and on top of this wonderful cupcake was the ring he wanted to give me that night at the fair. He got down on one knee and held my hand. Then he told me that he didn’t care if I grew horns out of my head and turned different colors, he loved me and wanted me for the rest of his life. I started to cry and said yes to him as I loved him with all my heart. He put the ring on my finger and I saw fireworks above us in all different colors. We were married a month later and the rest is history. She patted Daisy’s hand gently.

So my point is that every couple goes through challenging things, but if they are meant to be, it will work out. Fate has a way of helping it along too. Now eat your breakfast and tell me about that dream.

Daisy sat there thinking about Gram’s story. It made her feel a little better somehow. If her grandfather could accept Gram so easily, maybe Lucas would be the same. It gave her a little hope. As she began to eat she told her about the dream.

    ~Chapter Two~

Once Daisy told Gram about her dream she felt a lot better. Nina wasn’t sure it was a dream but didn’t tell her that. Some things her granddaughter needed to learn on her own. Daisy wondered what she would do if she ever ran into Jason and now this dream occurred. If it turned out to be a true premonition then she needed to be prepared and keep her shields up. More training would be needed and Katie would have to help her. Katie! Daisy completely forgot about her. She had left a note but wondered if Katie had called.

Telling Gram she would be right back, she went to her room to get her phone and walked into the living room where Nina was now seated. Well, Daisy, there is no time like the present. Katie must be worried sick about you even if you did leave a note. I’m sure Lucas has called you too. You have to face it, child. You’re stronger than you think. Daisy sat on the sofa and looked at her cell. Katie had called ten times and texted her too many times to count. When she scrolled down, she saw that Lucas had called too. There were at least fifteen calls from him and voicemails. He didn’t text her, he had called. Her hands shook as she wondered what to do.

Just then the phone buzzed and it was Katie. Answering Daisy said hello and heard her screaming. Daisy! What the hell happened? I came home to see your note saying you went to Grams. What happened? I want to know right now! I was worried sick about you and if you don’t talk to me, I am taking the train up there this instant. Was it Luke? Please talk to me! Daisy listened and Gram nodded. Taking a deep breath she spoke. "Katie, please calm down. I’m sorry you’re upset and I never meant to worry you. If you will just take a breath and relax, I will tell you everything.

Daisy filled her in on what happened and waited. There was silence on the other end of the phone and then she heard a sigh. Sorry, but I needed a glass of wine after this. Geez, so Adele outed you before you could even tell him yourself. I know she didn’t mean it but geez! Look, Dase, I really think you need to come home and deal with it. I know you think you need to get away to think, but the longer you wait the more awkward it will be. I don’t think it will be as bad as you think. Plus running from him at the hotel wasn’t the best reaction though I understand why you did. Still, you can’t just turn off love. If Luke loves you like I know he does then he’s also upset. This a real mess. Is there anything I can do for you? Want me to come there and stay with you? I’m here for you Dase.

Smiling into the phone, she knew she had such a good friend and she loved her. Katie, you’re right. You are always able to see both sides. I do need to deal with this but not today. I’m going to stay here with Gram and come home on Tuesday when I get my thoughts together. I didn’t really think about how Lucas was feeling and I should have. If it were me, I would be upset too. He values trust over everything and I didn’t trust him enough with this. That’s my issue, not his. Did you know he came to see Gram and met her? Yes, he was here to meet with an author and stopped by. He didn’t even mention it. I should be upset but I’m not. I just love him so much. Thank you for being you and we’ll talk more tomorrow. I love you Katie boo.

Katie laughed and said to say hi to Gram. She hung up, took a deep breath, and smiled at Gram. Okay, one down, one to go. What is our agenda for today? I need to get my thoughts together first. A few hours to clear her head would help a lot.

They went to the farmers market and came back with fruits, vegetables, and some pies. As they were unpacking Daisy heard her cell buzz. Looking down she saw it was Lucas. Not knowing what to do, she looked at Gram. You have to answer it. Don’t make him wait any longer. Just answer and then talk to him in person on Tuesday. Daisy nodded, her heart beating fast. She walked into the living room and answered. Hello, Lucas? That was all she got out as he started talking. Daisy, where are you? I have been worried sick. You ran out of the hotel and didn’t even let me speak. I tried calling Katie but her phone must be off. This isn’t how we communicate. Talk to me.

Daisy listened to him and felt guilt rise. He was worried about her and it didn’t sound like he didn’t love her. Taking a deep breath she waited until he finished. Lucas, I’m at Grams. I’m sorry I ran off and worried you. It was just that, well, I felt very afraid of how you would react, and seeing your face when Adele appeared kind of threw me a bit. You’re right, I should have let you speak and I will admit this isn’t my finest moment. If you agree, I would like to meet you on Tuesday to discuss all of this. I want to stay here tomorrow and be with Gram. I never meant to hurt you, I swear it. We should always communicate. You’re right. I’m so sorry. Daisy felt her eyes moistening, and the tears were going to fall any minute.

She waited to hear what he would say and took another deep breath praying he would still want her. She heard a deep sigh from Lucas. Daisy, you don’t really know me if you felt afraid. I’m just glad you’re safe and at Nina’s. Come to my place Tuesday around one and we’ll talk. Say hi to her for me and text me when you’re home safe tomorrow night. Daisy let out the breath she was holding. Okay, thank you and I’ll text you tomorrow and see you on Tuesday. Bye. She hung up and whispered. I love you. Walking to her bedroom, she lay down on the bed and cried.

An hour later she walked out to see Gram in the living room. Some of the teaching books were on the coffee table. She patted the seat next to her and Daisy sat down, leaning her head on her shoulder. I heard you speaking to Lucas. How did the phone call go? Daisy looked at her and sighed. He was worried about me. He didn’t know where I was. Plus he was upset that I ran out and didn’t let him talk. He’s right. So we’re going to meet at his apartment on Tuesday to talk. He said to text him when I get home tomorrow and say hi to you. He didn’t say he loved me. He always said it before we got off the phone. What if he stopped loving me?

Gram turned and looked at her, seeing her reddened eyes from crying.I think that Lucas still loves you but he’s upset. Did you say you loved him? Daisy shook her head. Then why do you think he should have said it? You two remind me so much of Gregory and myself. Both stubborn and madly in love with the other. I think that everything is going to be okay. You just have to talk it all out and be honest with him now. Let him have his say too. Daisy looked at her and nodded. I plan to. I’m not ever going to keep anything from him again. If he accepts my gifts, there will be no more secrets. I love him, he’s the one. I just hope he can love me as I am. Gifts and all.

Daisy smiled feeling Gram hugging her tightly. Nina knew they would be fine but Daisy had to find it out for herself. Okay, so you spoke to Lucas and now take a deep breath because we’re going to do some more work on your gifts. I want to practice your incantations and how to deal with evil spirits. You need to know more about this subject. Go get a few cookies and we’ll begin Daisy smiled and nodded going into the kitchen to get the sweets. She would put all her energy into learning today and keep all other problems away.

A little later Adele appeared as they were saging the house and protecting the home. Hiya toots, did you speak to your man yet? You didn’t have your personal shields up. She walked over to Daisy. I’m so sorry for making the two of you upset. I never meant to just pop in and shock him like that. Edwin said it would be okay but I still feel bad. We are together you know. I’m so happy. Hi Nina, how are you? By the way, I saw Katie and she told me she spoke to you. So do you feel better? What are you going to do about Lucas?

Gram smiled and waved at Adele and nodded to Daisy to go talk to her. Motioning towards the kitchen, Adele followed. Look Adele, I was going to tell Lucas all about me and mention you later when you shimmered in. You kinda sped up the process. It’s not your fault. I guess I let my shields down. Must have been my nerves. He had to find out anyway. I don’t blame you or hate you. We’re good. Okay? As for Lucas, he called me and I spoke to him. We are meeting on Tuesday. I hope it turns out well. I’m really happy you and Edwin found each other. How did that happen and how come you stayed away? We thought you were never coming back.

Adele smiled at her. Daisy, thank you for not hating me. I just couldn’t bear it. I’m happy that you finally talked to your hot tamale. You know he ran after you when you left the hotel but you were gone. Then he sat back down and got drunk. That man loves you, and I think you will know it on Tuesday. Makeup sex is the best! Daisy rolled her eyes and Adele laughed. "Well, it is! Now here is what happened with Edwin and me. When I left to go back to the spirit community I had to tie up loose ends. You know they have a group that documents when a spirit’s case is resolved? You take a number and mine wasn’t the first. While I was waiting, who should I see but my Edwin. It seems that his case was attached to mine. Once my case was solved it allowed us
