I enjoyed this title by B.A. Rose, though new to paranormal romance. Once past the idea that wolves, vampires, and other such entities can shift to being human, the novel seemed to take on an identity of its own. The story is of two worlds coming together not just between a couple, but between the couple and those significant to their respective lives.
Though expressions of love are plentious and bountiful in "Jax-silver Crescent Wolves" I chose to skim those occasions where love making is described. Just a personal choice!
Author B.A. Rose describes settings, events, characters with immense detail; focus on interpersonal relationships too is a highlight of this title. Chapter length is felt to be comfortable.
I recommend this title for its entertainment value, and for ponderning themes and ideas under the surface.

Jax-Silver Crescent Wolves - B.A. Rose

Chapter 1

Jax Lawson never wanted the position of alpha but had no choice. His father had been alpha of the Silver Crescent pack for over one hundred years until he got power-hungry and challenged another pack alpha. The cost was deadly. Now five years later, at the age of twenty-eight, he was in charge of the Silver Crescent pack, having left his job at a huge architectural firm. His mother was devastated by her mate’s death and chose to go to her own father’s pack to live as the memories were too much. All that remained was his sister, Adriana, younger by seven years, and his father’s people. He took over and learned as he found his way of being in charge of a huge pack of wolves. Everything in his life had come to a halt because this was a twenty-four-seven position.

He walked along the compound making sure all was right and talking to those who lived there. Passing by a group, he saw his Beta, Thierry flirting with one of the female wolves. A playboy, he went from bed to bed. Jax swore one day there would be a female who would claim him and his days of being a Casanova would be over. Thierry whispered into the brunette’s ear and she flushed smiling at him. He walked towards Jax grinning and whistling a tune. Morning Alpha. It’s a beautiful morning.Jax gave him a look and raised an eyebrow. They had been friends since cubs and Thierry knew he hated being called alpha by him especially when they weren’t around the pack. Seems to be a better morning for you than most. When are you going to stop playing around? You know there are only so many females here right? One more thing. Can you just call me Jax? I cringe when you call me alpha.

Thierry laughed loudly and clapped him on the back. Nobody did that to the alpha but they were buds a long time so it came naturally. Alpha, I mean Jax, dude you need to get laid. You are too uptight. I know this wasn’t your plan and you wanted to be an architect running your own firm. Sometimes life has other ideas. Besides, you’re a damn good alpha and would have made your father proud. Everyone respects you, even many of the other packs. Your dad didn’t have that way with people. Jax grunted. Thierry’s eyes lit up.Hey, I have an idea. How about we go out tonight and bring Caleb with us? I heard there’s a new club in town. Jax sighed. He had plenty of women when he was in college and even a few after. I get laid plenty. Don’t worry about my sex life. I’m just trying to do what’s right for my people. I don’t have time to play anymore. Not like my beta it seems." Thierry grinned, shrugging.

Jax thought about his role as alpha. He was firm but fair and it took a few lessons to make him that way. He always enjoyed building and being an architect. That was why their compound was the nicest one. Having his own smaller business now, he rebuilt all the homes, including the main house which was more of a mansion. He lived there as the alpha wolf. The only problem was that it was lonely. His sister, Adriana was in college and wouldn’t be home until winter break. Every day there was something to take care of. He was busy being in charge of one of the largest packs in New Orleans. Once things settled down he would worry about finding a mate. Right now he had other priorities.

He was in thought when he heard Thierry his name. Looking at him he said, I have a lot on my plate. Not sure if a club is for me. Go with Caleb. He’ll keep you from getting into trouble. Just then another voice piped in.I heard my name. What about keeping that horn dog out of trouble? He laughed and slapped the back of Thierry’s head. Jax grinned as Thierry turned to punch Caleb in the arm. Don’t mess up the hair bro. I need to look good for the ladies later. Turning to his other friend Jax said, You’re going to a new club later and making sure he doesn’t get into trouble. The last thing I need is a war with another pack. Not that I would lose, just don’t want the hassle.

Caleb folded his arms and looked at them. The three had been best friends all their lives. Jax trusted both of them implicitly and that was why they were chosen to stand by his side. Six foot six, Caleb was the brawn of the bunch. Not that they weren’t all big but he was the security along with Thierry. His medium brown hair with streaks of blonde and Grey eyes always attracted the ladies, but his heart had been broken a long time ago and he wasn’t looking for a mate. Thierry grinned at him. Hey doofus, will you convince Jax to come with us? He needs to let loose for a bit, not just when the moon is full. Won’t listen to me.

Turning to Jax, Caleb saw the tension in his shoulders. He was young and unprepared when he took over as alpha and had taken to the job like a fish to water even if he didn’t like it. You need to come out with us. Just have a few drinks, and get away from here for a little while. It’s taking a toll on you. I promise to babysit Thierry and make sure he doesn’t start any fights. What do you say? They weren’t going to let up. Jax knew he had lost this argument. Folding his arms, he stood over them at six foot seven and raised an eyebrow causing them to lower their eyes in respect. Normally, I would pull rank over the both of you but you have a point. Okay, I’ll go but only for a little while. I need to do some paperwork when I get back. Then work on the blueprints for more houses to build on the land. Thierry grinned. We leave at eight.

Abigail Barrett, Abby to her friends was having a glass of wine as she relaxed from her day. At twenty-three, she was the youngest professor at the university where she worked. She had graduated high school at sixteen and finished college by twenty. She just got her master’s and was working on her Ph.D. She loved teaching and though she looked as young as some of her students they liked her. Teaching English, she made learning fun and interesting so most of her class enjoyed it. She was reading a book as that was her go-to when unwinding as the door opened. In walked Marisa and Nicole, her two best friends and roommates.

Nicole walked over and took the book putting it down. If you keep doing this every Friday night you will never meet a guy. Ris and I are going out and you are coming. It’s this new club and I heard a lot of hot guys go there. You need sex. Books can’t make you scream in passion. She laughed as Abby rolled her eyes. Nicole was the sex pot of the bunch and had more boyfriends than Abby had books. She was in advertising and very creative. Sighing, she turned to her. I have papers to grade and I just want a night in. I am not looking for a hookup. You and Marisa go.

Trying to grab her book back, Nicole took it and placed it on the chair. Ris, talk some sense into her. I’m afraid she’ll end up with a hundred cats. Marisa was the sensible, straightforward one but very kind and she smiled gently, taking Abby’s hand. Don’t listen to Nikki, she’s just pissed because Jonah dumped her. As if a hookup was going to turn into a relationship. Turning to Nicole she smiled. Honey, if you give the milk away all the time, he ain’t buying the cow. Capisce?

Making a face, Nikki walked over to the counter to pour herself a glass of wine. He had a small dick anyways. His loss. Now talk some sense into Abby. Sitting back down she sipped her wine and watched as Marisa do her magic. That girl could convince the devil to reform. Smiling, Marisa turned back to Abby. Look, you need to come out. I am not saying you have to meet someone and jump his bones. Just get dressed, put on some make-up, and come have a few drinks with us. We are supposed to enjoy our twenties so come on Abs. What do you say?

Looking at both of them she knew they were right. Not very social she had dated a bit but nothing serious. Maybe a few hours out wouldn’t hurt? Standing up she smiled at them. Okay, okay. I’ll go. But I am only staying for a little while. If I want to leave, I am. Okay? Both of her friends nodded and Nicole mumbled low, Maybe you’ll finally get some. Abby gave her a look and she winked back. We leave at eight. Wear your hottest dress.

Club Rouge had opened a month earlier and was already the hottest place in town. It was run by a werewolf pack but nobody knew that. The owner hired humans so that the club could still stay open when there was a full moon. It was noisy and the music was pounding. Jax walked in with Thierry and Caleb behind him and looked around. There was a mix of paranormal beings and humans. He looked at the dance floor and saw a female vamp dancing with a warlock and they looked attached. Or was it her fangs in his neck and the look of ecstasy on his face that had them stuck like glue?

He looked over at the bar and grinned. An old friend from college was tending it. Walking over he watched as the surprised look on the man’s face turned into a smile.Holy shit, as I live and breathe, Jax Lawson. Heard you became alpha and vanished. Where have you been boy? Laughing Jax went forward and gave a bear hug to the man. Jacob Rossi. What the hell brings you to Nola? As you can see I’m alive and well. You were top grades man. What are you doing tending bar?

Jacob grinned and was about to explain when he heard a few growls. He pointed, towel in his other hand. Those your boys growling at me? Some things never change. Jax turned to see Theirry and Caleb’s eyes yellow and their fangs down. Easy. This is Jacob Rossi. A classmate from Architect school. We were roommates. Step down. Now. He turned back to see Jacob’s eyes turn red. He was half demon and half human and they had learned much about each other while rooming together.

Sighing Thierry took a seat on the right of Jax, while Caleb sat on his left. Jacob laughed, his eyes going back to normal.I have to say, you must be one hell of an alpha to have those two watching your back. What can I get you? Sitting down, Jax got a scotch and beers for Theirry and Caleb. They’re my beta and gamma. Also childhood friends. Meet Theirry and Caleb. Back to you. Why are you bartending and not building skyscrapers in New York?

Thierry nodded to Jacob as did Caleb and took their beers, drinking as they surveyed the crowd. Jacob leaned over.I was doing that for a while but it was a rat race. I’m talking about humans behaving like rats. Stealing ideas and it was a dog-eat-dog world. Sorry for the comparison. Anyway, I decided I had enough. I made my money and went into a partnership. Not only am I the bartender but half owner of this joint. I still build on the side but I enjoy this much more. Plus the women are very happy to meet the owner. He grinned and nodded towards a buxom blonde human female who was waving him over. It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it. We’ll catch up later. Have a few drinks on the house and enjoy. Jax raised his glass and thanked him, watching as he walked over to the female who was leaning over in her low-cut dress.

He turned around to observe the crowd and watched who was coming and going. Thierry was talking to a pretty redhead next to him and Caleb was drinking his beer. Jax looked at his watch and was about to make some excuse to leave when his eyes looked upon a beautiful female standing at the door. His heart started to pound and he heard his wolf howling. He was unable to turn away and knew at that moment it was her. His mate!

Chapter 2

Abigail kept pulling at her dress. Though only five foot five she gave a taller appearance. Nicole had persuaded her to try on one of her dresses and the damn thing was too short. She wished she had worn dress pants and a blouse. Marisa turned to see her fidgeting. Stop Abby. You look fine. You look beautiful. Your boobs look amazing in that dress. Chin up and let’s go inside. Nicole smiled brightly as they got stamped by the very large and tall bouncer. Oh, this is going to be a good night. Hiya handsome! The bouncer grinned and winked at her as she sashayed by, making sure he watched her ass as she walked in.

Once they were inside Abigail looked around. This wasn’t the type of place she usually went to. She could count on one hand how many times she had gone to a club. She saw a tall woman who was pale as a ghost clinging to a male with hair down to his waist. It looked like they were having sex and she turned away, embarrassed. Nicole had already found someone to dance with and he was grinding up against her. Marisa was next to Abigail and nudged her. Hey, Abs, at the bar a very tall and gorgeous man is staring at you. Turning, she saw him. Sitting on the bar stool, she wasn’t sure but he looked tall. His hair was blonde and his build was muscular. She wasn’t close enough to see his eye color but his stare made her shiver and heat up at the same time. Unable to pull herself away, she felt a push and looked. A female turned and giving her a smirk said, Excuse me, honey.

She nodded and looked around the room. Marisa was at the bar and talking to the very cute bartender. When had she walked away? Abby wanted to leave and was about to walk out when she felt a warm hand on her arm. A deep, velvet voice spoke to her. Please don’t go. I haven’t seen a woman as beautiful as you all night. Turning she realized the voice was coming from the male who a few moments ago had been searing her with his gaze. Suddenly feeling shy, she looked down. Thank you. I was just looking for my friends. Excuse me. Going to move she felt his hand take hers and their fingers entwined causing her to look down. When she heard his voice again, she raised her face to his. His eyes were a gorgeous golden amber and he had a smile that showed a dimple on his cheek. I didn’t introduce myself. I’m Jax Lawson. May I buy you a drink?

Feeling flustered and wanting to pull her hand away even though it felt incredibly like home, she left it there. I’m Abigail Barrett and no thank you. I’m not a big drinker. If you will excuse me, I need to find my friends. Jax felt deflated. This woman wanted to leave. She wasn’t that tall but her legs were long. Her hair was dark brown and her eyes a deep green. The dress hugged her in all the right places and her breasts were full making him think of ways he could pleasure her. She appeared shy but there was a strength inside. His wolf howled not to let her go. Sighing, he slowly moved his hand out of hers and smiled. It was very nice to meet you, Abigail. I hope we meet again sometime. Enjoy your night. He walked away trying to figure out how to do that so he can make her his.

A feeling of loss overcame her once his hand released hers. She just met this man so why did he seem so familiar? When he wished her a good night she saw he looked sad. He didn’t even know her. As he turned she got a good look at him. He was huge and very tall. His build was strong with not an ounce of fat. He wore black slacks with a gray shirt. His scent filled her nostrils and she almost called him back. At that moment she heard her name being called. Nicole was at the bar waving at her. Walking through the crowd she saw that her friend was not alone.

Jax walked back to the other side of the bar to see his friend Thierry talking to another good-looking female. She was sex on a stick and he waved at the bartender for another scotch. Caleb came up to him. What’s wrong? You look like you lost your best friend. Jax took a large drink of the scotch and pointed to a refill. You won’t believe this but I found my mate and she wants nothing to do with me. Why did I agree to come out? It was a mistake.

Caleb sat down and ordered another beer. He took a long drink and turned to him. Are you shitting me? Are you sure? I mean maybe it’s just been a while since you had sex. Jax turned to him. My wolf recognized her. He imprinted. She’s my mate. Caleb whistled. What is she? A witch, demon, vamp? Jax smiled. A human. Her name is Abigail Barrett and she is fully human. I’m in deep shit. Caleb sighed and turned to look into the crowd. Which one is she? Show me. Jax turned to point her out and didn’t see her dancing. Did she leave already? He had to find her and make her his."

Abigail walked over to where Nicole was sitting with the same male she had been dancing with. His hand was dangerously close to her inner thigh but Nicole didn’t seem to mind. Upon seeing her, she waved her to sit down. Oh Dave, this is my best friend Abby. We have known each other since middle school. Abs, I want you to meet Dave. He’s going home with me tonight. The large man grinned at her and reached out his large hand to shake hers. Nice meeting you Abs. Your hot friend is going home with me. To my place. Wanna join us? Hearing a stranger call her by her nickname had her wanting to throw something at him but she just pulled her hand away. It’s Abigail and no, I don’t. Nicole, I think we need to get you home. You’ve already had too much to drink. Dave put his arm around her friend’s waist, as his other hand moved between her legs. Oh, I think she wants to stay. Don’t you honey?

Nicole giggled and leaned into Dave who now moved his hand further up her dress. Abigail looked to see if Marisa was around. She needed to get Nicole away from this pervert. Standing up she took Nicole’s hand. Hey show me where the ladies’ room is. I can’t find it. Nicole went to go but Dave pulled her back. She stays here. It’s on your left over there. I will keep your friend company. Abby gave him a look. She decided to stay put. When she saw Dave give her another drink she took it away. He growled at her which made her jump. For a split second, his eyes looked red. What are you doing? Give her that drink. She was angry at Nicole for getting herself into this and the jerk who was acting like a neanderthal. She took the glass and threw the contents in his face. Here! You have it back! Let go of my friend. We’re leaving!

Slurring her words and giggling, Abby took Nicole’s hand to pull her away from him. Dave stood up and Abby swore his eyes turned red again. Get out of here bitch or else! Your friend is leaving with me. Come on honey. Come play with Dave. Abby didn’t know what to do. She was about to find the bouncer at the door when she heard a scream. One minute she was by the bar and the next someone had her in a corner, guarding her. She only saw a large back and peeked around to see Dave getting pummeled by the same male who spoke to her earlier.

Jax had finally found Abby by her scent. She was at the other side of the bar trying to get her very drunk friend away from demon Dave. He had a bad rep and everyone knew he liked his sex rough, sometimes violent. Listening in with his wolf hearing he heard Abby telling him off. Pride swelled in his chest at the way his mate handled herself. It was when he heard Dave threaten her that his wolf went crazy. Nobody hurt his woman. Jumping into action he quickly moved Abby to safety and had Caleb block her while he went after the demon.

All it took was two good punches and the man hit the ground unconscious. Jax sniffed the glasses and smelled that date rape drug that some paranormal beings put in drinks for unsuspecting females. Mostly human ones. Abby’s friend who he heard her call Nicole was oblivious to it all and had walked away during the brawl. That female needed someone to take her in hand. Jacob came over and leaned down at Dave. You stupid bastard. What did I tell you about pulling this shit? When you wake up I’m going to throw your ugly ass out of here for good. You broke the rules moron.

Turning he saw Jax standing there. Clapping him on the shoulder he grinned. I have seen you fight before but this was brutal. Thanks, man. I owe you one. Better make sure the human in the corner is okay. She looks a bit freaked out. Jax had forgotten that Abby was being protected by Caleb and he scratched his head smiling. That’s my mate man. She doesn’t know it yet but she’s going to be mine. Take it easy and we’ll catch up soon. He walked away to hear Jacob laughing, looking down at Dave. I love my job.

Abigail saw Jax walking toward her and she just wanted to run into his arms. When the man blocking her walked away she stood there just staring at him. She knew she had to say something. Thank you, thank you for helping us. I didn’t know what I was going to do. Nicole can get into situations sometimes. I know when she wakes up tomorrow she’s going to remember nothing. I’ll make sure she’s reminded. Thank you again. She went to leave but he blocked her. Taking her hand, he caressed it slowly. He couldn’t let her go. I did it for you. I didn’t like how that jerk spoke to you and I didn’t want him to try anything. He’s lucky or it would have been worse. Your friend walked off while this was going on. I appreciate the thanks but could you do something for me instead?

She looked at him and felt warmth spreading through her body. She didn’t want to pull her hand away. How had he heard Dave across the bar? The feeling of his hand had her confused. She finally asked, What do you want? I appreciated your help. What more are you asking? Jax looked into her eyes while stroking her hand and grinned. Will you go on a date with me?

Chapter 3

Abby stood there stunned. This gorgeous man who had just knocked out a huge brute was very shyly asking her out. She wasn’t the most popular girl in her trio and she wondered why he didn’t go after Nicole. Most men went to her first, or Marisa. She was always the last choice but she didn’t mind. Her teaching career was important, as were her family, and friends. Love could wait. That’s what she had told herself. Standing there she wondered if maybe it was time to take a chance. Besides what could one date hurt? It would probably be the only one with him. She had many one-time dates in her life.

Jax looked at her and knew she was wondering what to do. He never had trouble attracting a female and none had ever taken even a minute considering a date with him. Here was his mate, and she was standing there, not saying a word. This was going to be way harder than he thought. Stroking her hand he cleared his throat and looked into her gorgeous face. She was one of those females who were unaware of how beautiful she truly was. He had noticed the other men looking at her when she walked in and it made him want to tear their throats out. It took all the control he had to keep his wolf down. What if she said no? That wasn’t an option. She was going to be his.

Hearing him clear his throat and feeling the warmth of his fingers as they stroked hers, Abby sighed. Looking at him she saw his gaze was heated. His eye color looked even lighter than before. What was she going to do? She wanted to say yes but what if he was just trying to get close to her so he could hit on one of her friends? That happened a few times, and it hurt her feelings. Gently pulling her hand away, she moved back to put some space between them though it wasn’t easy as she was in a corner. Look, Jax, I’m sure you’re a very nice guy but I’m not dating right now. I want to get my career established and need to stay focused. I’m sorry. I thank you again for helping my friend and me out. Excuse me, please. I need to leave. It was nice meeting you.

Jax couldn’t believe she turned him down. She gave some excuses about wanting to focus on her career. He didn’t buy it. He saw how she responded to his touch. She was going to take work but it was worth it. Abigail was going to be his mate. Moving aside he smiled and went to take her hand again holding it. What about a cup of coffee? You must get a break at work? We can go to any place you suggest. It will be in public so you won’t have to worry. What do you say? One cup of coffee and maybe some dessert. I just want to get to know you. Abby felt the warmth flowing through her again and closed her eyes savoring it. What could a cup of coffee hurt? If he did ask about her friends she would make some excuse about having an appointment and leave. Opening her eyes, she saw him smiling at her. He was devastatingly gorgeous. "Okay, one coffee. Monday, come to Timber Creek University and meet me in front of the Literature building at one p.m. I’ll meet you in front.

She looked at their entwined hands. I have to take Nicole home before she does any more damage. Sliding her hand slowly out of his she smiled and turned to go. His wolf howled in happiness as he called after her. Abigail, you didn’t give me your number. Turning she smiled. Taking his cell, she put in her number. See you on Monday. Night Jax. He stood there watching her walk away. His groin ached. He had to take it slow or she would be scared off. One thing was for certain. Abigail Barrett was officially off the market.

Theirry and Caleb walked over to him. Seeing them he smiled. Well, any luck Thierry? Caleb, thanks for watching Abby while I took care of that asshole. Caleb turned to see Abby talking to her drunk friend who was a looker. The other one helped walked her out of the club. Turning back he grinned. So, what happened after I left? Jax grinned feeling like he was high. Well, after much convincing she agreed to have coffee with me on Monday. I have to go slow with her. She isn’t likely to fall for anything. She’s gorgeous and smart. Perfect qualities for my Luna. Thanks for convincing me to come out. Thierry looked at them. What the hell did I miss? They laughed and filled him in as they left the club. Walking out, Thierry gave his card to one tall female wolf and she smiled waving at him.

Walking toward the car, Thierry shook his head in disbelief. So this Abigail, a human female is your mate? Man, you are in for it. What is your mom going to say? She wants you to be with an alpha female. What is Abigail going to say when you tell her you’re a wolf? Of all the beings at the club, you imprinted on a human. Jax, when you screw up, you do it big. Normally, Jax would beat the crap out of someone for speaking that way to him but he was older and wiser. Thierry was just saying what others would be thinking. I didn’t plan it but when I saw her, that was it. I know she’s the one and whether my mother likes it or not, Abby will be my mate. Caleb, do you think this way too? Looking at Thierry and then his alpha he shrugged. To be honest, it should freak me out but it doesn’t because I think her friend is pretty cute. Jax laughed and clapped him on the back. Which one? The tall blonde? She is a looker but not like my Abigail.

Caleb grinned. Your Abigail? Already? Man are you in trouble. No, the other one. The smaller one who started the brawl. Something about her calls to me. Thierry blocked him, holding him by the shoulders. Get a grip man! What happened to, ‘I don’t have time for a relationship? Don’t need one,’. He smirked. You jumping ship too? Say it ain’t so Caleb." Jax chuckled and walked over to the jeep. Getting in he thought a plan was needed. If he was going to make Abigail his, he needed to be smart. With the other two still arguing, he drove home, feeling happier than he had felt in a very long time.

The next morning Abigail was making breakfast when Nicole walked out groaning. I feel like I was hit by a truck. My head is pounding like crazy. What the hell was in those drinks? Laughing, Abby walked over to her and handed her two aspirin and a glass of orange juice. I think you were roofied. Do you remember anything? Walking back to the stove, Abby plated some eggs, bacon, and toast, setting it by her side of the table. She put two pieces of toast in front of Nicole who groaned pushing it away. "No, I don’t remember anything! I feel too sick to eat. What happened last night?

A door slammed and Nicole jumped, holding her head as Marisa walked in. She always took a run in the mornings and smiled seeing Nicole laying her head down. Looking up at Abby she grinned. Not feeling so good, is she? That’s what you get for hitting on some perv. Dammit, Nik not every guy is going to be good. If it weren’t for that guy Jax you would be a sex slave or something. She walked off saying she was taking a shower. Nicole looked up. She’s pissed at me. My mom never got that angry with me. Ever. Then again she hardly took care of me. Groaning she lay her head back down.

Sitting down, Abigail leaned forward, placing her hand on her friend’s arm. You started a brawl last night. Not only was that guy bad news, but he called me a bitch and I thought he was going to hit me. What if you had gone home with him and he beat you to a pulp? Thank goodness Jax got involved. He pounded Dave and minutes later he hit the floor unconscious. You just walked off in your own world. Marissa is worried about you. We both are. What if the next time, you aren’t so lucky? Think about that one.

Picking up her fork Abby began to eat. Looking over she saw Nicole take a piece of toast and bite into it. Tears were in her eyes. I’m so sorry Abs. I know Ris loves me. You two are like sisters to me. I promise I’ll be more careful with who I flirt with. Do you forgive me? Smiling, Abby nodded and they sat there quietly, eating their breakfast. She thought to herself that Nicole needed to find a guy who would be good for her. She needed stability.

Since it was Saturday they decided to go to the mall. Nicole felt better though she was a little pale. As they shopped, Abby kept thinking about Jax. She was nervous. What if he saw her on Monday and realized she is nothing like the female he met at the club? She dressed a bit more modestly but fashionable. Would he lose interest? She felt someone shaking her and looked to see Nicole standing there. Where were you just now? You have this goofy look on your face. Marisa laughed walking over with a few dresses. That’s because she’s going on a coffee date with your savior.

Nicole, her eyes wide stood there. Why am I just hearing about this now? Which one was he? How could you not tell me? She made a face and Abby rolled her eyes. First of all you were out of it last night and two, this morning you were groaning for hours. When should I have told you? Nicole flushed and lowered her eyes. Okay, okay. I’m here now. So give me the scoop. What does he look like? When are you seeing him?Knowing that unless she told her everything Nicole wasn’t going to let up. How about we pay for our items and get some lunch? I’ll fill you in. Nicole smiled brightly. Okay but I want to know all the details. Leave nothing out.

They walked into the diner which they frequented regularly and was known for their burgers. Sitting down, they ordered but Nicole only got a bowl of soup and crackers. It’s best I don’t eat much yet. Still not feeling a hundred percent. Abby and Marisa ordered burgers with fries as they always indulged on the weekends. Starting from the beginning, Abby told Nicole how Dave started getting all possessive and touching her all over. When she tried to take her home, he got physical, grabbing her. As she relayed the story, Nicole gasped and got up, her hand over her mouth. I think I’m going to be sick. Order me hot tea and some toast."

Watching her run to the ladies’ room, Marisa turned to Abby. Sometimes the truth hurts. I’m just glad she’s alright. Thank goodness Jax stepped in. You like him already, don’t you? Abby smiled at her friend. Marisa always knew what she was feeling. Nothing could be hidden from her. I think I do. Is that crazy? I mean, he just held my hand and I got all warm and tingly. I could have stayed that way. At first, I said no but he mentioned having coffee and I figured I would be safe in a public place. He’s gorgeous Ris. Why did he ask me out? There were so many beautiful women there. You and Nik included.

Looking at her, Marisa rolled her eyes. Abs you’re a knockout! Are you crazy? Why wouldn’t he? When we walked in, all the men watched you. No, it wasn’t the dress. It was you. I know you think that Nik and I get all the guys but that isn’t true. They know you are a hard nut to crack and we are easier. Well, Nik is anyway. She laughed. Jax has good taste. Just take it slow and see where it goes. I have a good feeling about this.

Abby smiled and was about to respond when she felt someone watching her. Turning she saw Jax and two men sitting in a booth not far from theirs. She remembered the one who blocked her, his name was Caleb. The other she didn’t know. She hardly had time to calm herself when she saw Jax walking toward her.

Jax, Thierry, and Caleb had just come back from meeting with two wolf packs and working out territory rights. They decided to get some food before going back to the compound. They sat down looking at the menu. They were about to discuss the meeting when Jax felt the hairs on the back of his neck standing up. His wolf growled happily and he smelled her scent. Slowly turning, he saw Abigail sitting with two other females and the one who was drunk last night got up quickly her hand over her mouth. Grinning he looked at his friends. She’s here! Abby is over there with her friends. Caleb the one you like just ran to the bathroom. I think she has a major hangover. Still think she’s cute? Caleb growled low and lowered his eyes. I made one comment. Not looking for anyone. I’m done with that. Thierry and Jax laughed. Calm down wolf. I’m only joking.

After hearing them talking for a few minutes, Jax stood up. If you’ll both excuse me, I’m going over to my mate. I need to be near her. Thierry looked over and smiled. The tall one is hot. See if she’s available. Jax punched him in the arm and growled. No hitting on the friends. Respect only. Lowering his eyes he nodded. Fine but after you marry Abigail, I can right? Jax walked away shaking his head. Caleb growled low and got up, with Thierry following.

Abby looked beautiful today. Even better in the daytime. She was wearing minimal makeup and was dressed more modestly than last night. To him she was perfect. He saw the shocked look on her face and grinned. Hi, Abby. Nice to see you again. My friends and I had some business to attend to and decided to grab some food. Never been here before. Staring at him speechless, Marisa held out her hand. You must be Jax. I’m Marisa. Nice to meet you. He shook her hand and turned back to look at Abby. Marisa began to make small talk. The food here is amazing. Right Abs? She looked at her and nodded her head.

Seeing Marisa giving her a look, Abby smiled up at him. Oh yes, you will like it. So what kind of business are you in? Jax grinned She was adorable when flustered. I dabble in many but mainly building. I do architecture. I’m looking forward to Monday. Abby was about to say something when Nicole walked back stopping short to stare at him. You must be Jax, the defender. Thank you for saving me from the perv last night. Abby, he’s gorgeous."Seeing his mate flush he ignored the comment.

Marisa gave her a look and she sat down beside her staying quiet. Jax didn’t know what to do so he took her hand stroking it. So what do you have planned for the rest of the day? Abby looked at her friends who were smiling. What was she going to say? Well we just got back from shopping and later I need to grade some papers. Not sure what is doing tonight.Jax turned to see his friends watching. This wasn’t going to be easy. Would you mind if we joined you for lunch? I mean if you’re busy later, I understand but since your here and I’m here why not have lunch together?

What could she say? Oh, okay. Sure. Why don’t we move to a table though? Jax helped her up, still holding her hand. Marisa and Nicole looked at each other and smiled. Waving over Thierry and Caleb, Jax walked over to a table and the waiter came over. He asked the man if they could sit here and he nodded smiling. Abby went to sit by Marisa but Jax led her next to him. The closeness was getting to her. He smelled so good and something about him comforted her. Marissa sat next to her and Thierry sat across with Nicole in the middle and Caleb on the other side. Jax cleared his throat I already met Marisa, so I know you must be Nicole, and you’re welcome about last night. Those two sitting beside you are Thierry and Caleb. Guys meet Marissa and Nicole. He smiled looking at Abby. This is Abigail. He almost said ‘My Abigail’, and caught himself.

Abby nodded to the men who grinned at her. They were just as large as Jax and just as handsome. Thierry held out his hand. So you’re Abigail. Jax spoke a lot about you. What do you do for a living? Jax gave him a look and he lowered his eyes. She thought that was strange. Why did he do that? Caleb smiled at her. Nice to meet you, Abigail. Sorry about last night. We never got formally introduced. Don’t mind T, he puts his foot in his mouth a lot. Giving him a look Thierry sat back down sulking. Marisa started to laugh. The waiter came over with their food and Nicole took a piece of toast and the hot tea. Thierry turned to her. Not feeling well? Looking at him, a smile touched her lips. Have a bit of a hangover. Feeling much better now. Caleb gave him a look and Thierry winked.

Turning to Abby, Jax looked into her eyes. Excuse my friend, he doesn’t know how to behave sometimes. So what is it you do again? Last night was a little crazy. Trying to take her hand away from his, Abby saw he was reluctant to give it back. She smiled as he slowly slid his hand from hers. I teach English Lit at the University. I’m a professor and hope to get tenured one day. Jax’s eyes widened. She was younger than him. Marisa saw the look and smiled. Our Abigail is a brainiac. She graduated high school at sixteen and college at twenty. She’s right on track with her doctorate. Does that frighten you? A smart woman?

Jax looked at Marisa and saw loyalty and protectiveness. He respected that and grinned. "No, I find it refreshing as
