Summary of The Invisible Hour a novel By Alice Hoffman - Willie M. Joseph

    PART ONE

    THE HERE AND NOW

    ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

Ivy Jacob, a young girl from Boston, grew up in an exclusive enclave of Greek Revival houses in Louisburg Square. She was treated as an outsider, with her parents not appreciating her short skirts or beauty. Despite her intelligence and love for books, she ignored her schoolwork and failed her classes. Ivy had a small jewelry box with trinkets, silver bangle bracelets, and a key to their maid Helen Connelly's house. Helen, who had never had children, knew how unhappy Ivy was and wanted to help her.

As Ivy grew older, she became more unmanageable, according to her parents. She had poor grades, slept past noon, and became a vegetarian. She was picked up by police for vandalizing John Harvard's statue and being caught in bed with a Harvard student named Noah Brinley. Ivy was grounded for several weeks, but she didn't realize what had happened until September. She felt a wave coursing through her, a quickening that felt like another heart was beating against her own. Ivy had never considered having a baby, and now what was important in the world had changed.

Students returning to Harvard find Noah in his dorm room, unpacking. He had been away all summer traveling with his parents in France, and he had not connected with Ivy after his return. Ivy had thought they were in love, but now she saw the dark, sidelong look Noah gave her and thought she might have been wrong. Noah was the first boy she had been intimate with, and the news of Ivy's pregnancy seemed childish to Ivy. He was concerned about the consequences of his actions, as he would have to pay for his father's interference.

Ivy felt like a little girl, abandoned to a world of chaos. She had no idea what he was doing with it, and she could have run away. Noah told her to do as he please, and Ivy was incredulous. She was so emotional that she might snap, ring up his parents, or stalk him in Harvard Yard. He had his future to think of, and Ivy was already a part of his past.

A week later, Ivy's dreams woke her in the middle of the night, and when she finally told her father about her situation, he slapped her. He asked Ivy if she was trying to kill her mother, ruin his business, or throw her life away. Ivy told him she was having a baby, and she was sent to her room as a child. She heard her parents arguing in the parlor, and they had already decided her fate. Ivy packed a suitcase and waited for them to go to bed, then went down the stairs to the front door. Her parents' belongings meant everything to them, and they were always careful to double-lock the front door.

In summary, Ivy's story highlights the challenges faced by students who are not as close as they thought they were. The story highlights the importance of understanding and respecting one's own desires and dreams, even when faced with a difficult situation.

Ivy, a young woman, finds herself in Harvard Square, surrounded by young people who buy drugs. She is shivering and hoping to spy Noah, but he is not there. Ivy's new companion, Kayla, is on her way to Western Massachusetts, where she has heard about a community where people are respected for who they are and not expected to be who their families wanted them to be. They panhandle and get enough cash together for a bus ticket, but Ivy's father's credit card has not yet canceled it. Ivy uses her father's card to withdraw enough cash for two bus tickets and tosses the American Express card in a trash bin at the Greyhound Bus Station.

Ivy is exhausted and woke up three hours later in Blackwell, Massachusetts, thinking it might be paradise.
