Chapter One
What this book’s about, how
it can help you, plus a quick hello
Welcome to this punchy guide to designing and delivering impactful, short group workshops in a fraction of the time. As you read (or, like I usually do, skim!) through these pages, you’ll learn how to share your expertise and build group engagement quickly and easily.
I’ll show you how to use my proven workshop blueprint to avoid spending countless hours searching for the perfect activity for your upcoming session.
This book is your companion guide
Designing workshops just got easier.
This book is perfect for you if:
You want to turn your knowledge, expertise, wisdom, and insights into an exciting workshop experience.
You’re seeking ideas on how to keep your group engaged every step of the way.
You have a clear understanding of your target audience and want to create a workshop that meets their needs.
You can use this workshop blueprint for delivering two-hour workshops on anything training, teaching, or content-related; ranging from data analysis and visualisation tips, to sharing your favourite dog-grooming techniques.
However, it’s not intended for those seeking guidance on designing process-type workshops like strategy sessions or design sprints.
While you may find some helpful ideas on how to prepare and deliver these types of session, the focus is on creating two-hour workshops that showcase your expertise and connect with your audience.
Be realistic about the outcome
Disclaimer: While a two-hour session can build awareness, share ideas, and help people progress, it cannot achieve major culture shifts or eliminate unconscious bias. Workshops can help but they need to be part of a bigger process, to achieve real business outcomes.
How to use this book
I suggest reading from start to finish. It’s short, and the concepts build on each other. But if you’d prefer to skip around, in the following Acts you’ll find everything you need to design your two-hour workshop using the SPARK framework (more on that later…) including:
Act I: Define the outcomes and focus on the destination of your workshop through three chapters.
Act II: Map out your pre-start, opening, and the bulk of your workshop. Use questions, ideas, and activities to engage your participants.
Act III: Put the finishing touches on your workshop design by identifying closing questions and activities. Develop strategies to communicate value to your participants after the workshop is over.
At the beginning of each chapter, you’ll find a high-level overview of what’s to come. As you complete a chapter, you’re invited to review what you’ve learned through the Checkpoint prompts.
Explore the Helpful Extras section, at the back, to grab my workshop-hosting shopping list, and for extra tips on managing group behaviour, how to transition between workshop topics, and more.
Hope you enjoy the format! I was inspired to write it this way after reading Nick Gray’s book, The 2-Hour Cocktail Party (hint: If you want to host a great party after your workshop to celebrate, grab his book!)
All the resources and digital tools mentioned in this book are available at 2hourwork.shop/freebies.
