    Chapter 1

Happiness Is Just a Page Away

Have you ever given thought to how much power you give to your spouse/boyfriend, your work, or even your children? How much time do you spend thinking that it’s your spouse’s job to ensure that you are happy? Do you stop and think, Oh, I am unhappy because of my spouse, or my job, or my life, and it’s all my spouse’s fault! If this applies to you, then you need to stop because you are completely wrong! Yep, you heard me right. I said you are wrong! We allow so many other things the power to govern over us and our happiness that does not belong. We need to stop giving all these things power over our life, our joy, and our happiness!

The Bible tells us in Nehemiah 8:10, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

So back up and read that again, The joy of the Lord is your strength. The Bible does not say that my spouse, or my job, or my children, or the type of car I drive, or even what type of home I have is my strength. It has taken me thirty-nine years just to realize that my happiness is not in the hands of anyone else but God. The great news is that there is so much more in the Bible about God being our source of strength and joy.

In Isaiah 61:10, the Bible says, I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

We have everything to be happy and thankful for, yet we still choose to put our happiness in the hands of others. Let’s think about the things that may be common in our lives that we say:

I’m unhappy with my job because I don’t make enough money, or they do not appreciate me, or I work too much.

I’m not happy because my spouse doesn’t spend as much time with me, or my spouse doesn’t buy me the things I want, which makes me unhappy.

My children are my reason for happiness!

In all things we do, we have to put God first! It has to be God first, then our spouse, after that our children, and then everyone else. We put God first by praying, reading our Bible, and keeping His commandments.

In Psalms 128: 1–2, the Bible says, Blessed is everyone that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

It is just that simple: follow the ways of the Lord, and you will be happy. It does not mean we will not go through tough times or trials and tribulations, but it means when we do, God is there with us. We don’t always do this though! We want to make our own happiness through material things. We expect our spouses to be our source of happiness like we see on the TV or movies. We ask too much of our loved ones when we expect
