About this ebook

One of the first things that we learn as children is to take and claim ownership. However, the Bible tells us that God is the Creator of all things, and to the Creator everything belongs. So how do we reconcile that in our minds? How do we live in a godly fashion while still being immersed in the culture of the world?

Like with all things, we need to use the Bible to direct our path. We need to look at the Scriptures, and we need to change our behaviors to fall in line with the will of God. And like the Bible tells us, "His commands are not burdensome" (1 John 5:3 NIV).

This book is therefore a fun exercise at changing our perspective. Fully loaded with plenty of Scripture, thought-provoking questions and exercises, as well as ample space for journaling, it is a helpful tool for anyone who struggles with the common phrase, "That's mine!"

    About the Author

    Introduction

Have you ever noticed how we tend to take ownership of the things in our lives? This is my room, my house, my car, my chair, my cup, my family, my children, my sweater, my lunch, my dog, etc. We take ownership of absolutely everything! Knowing this, have you ever wondered what God thinks about it? Is God happy that we take ownership? Or unhappy?

Absolutely everything in this world and beyond is the actual property of the one who created it all. So if it all belongs to our Creator, how does He feel about us humans taking ownership? How does He feel about us saying It's mine! That question is something that I have been struggling with for a while now. Therefore, this book's intention is to focus on this question and discover how to live in line with God's desires for us as well as to put a new, healthier outlook into practice.

The world is unprincipled. It's dog-eat-dog out there! The world doesn't fight fair. But we don't live or fight our battles that way—never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren't for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity. (2 Corinthians 10:3–6 MSG)

If this is your heart's desire as well, I hope that you enjoy reading and working through this book as much as I did writing and researching it! I am leaving some blank pages at the end of each chapter in order for you, the reader, to have room to take notes, journal your thoughts, and write down any insights that may come to you.

    Introductory Questions

Name ten things that you consider Mine!

How do you think God feels about your taking ownership of the things that you listed?

Write down your favorite translation of 2 Corinthians 10:5.

In your own words, what do you think 2 Corinthians 10:5 means?

Chapter One: What Does Getting Over Mean?

    What Does Getting Over Mean?

Like I said before, I have been struggling with the concept that I don't actually own anything, so nothing is actually Mine!

When I was a child, we spent a brief period homeless. This homelessness was not a major event in my childhood. It was only a tiny blip on the radar, and yet it affected me to my absolute core! Since then, I have spent my life trying to obtain a sense of security by owning everything needed for a peaceful life.

I am frugal with my income. I don't like to make extravagant purchases. I budget my every resource, and I claim ownership of what I decide in my mind is my share of those said resources. I think it could just as easily be termed stinginess. This stinginess has, in turn, negatively affected all my relationships.
