Chapter 1 - Introduction
The sanctity of marriage is an area that is under a great deal of attack in our society. Everywhere you look there are gossip magazines and television shows telling of steamy affairs, separation, and divorce. Common excuses are; I fell out of love
with him/her, My life is going in a different direction, He/she wasn't meeting my needs...The list goes on.
Unfortunately, Christians are just as likely to divorce as non-Christians. This should not be so. The Church has a responsibility to set an example to the world we live in.
How?
First, we must realize that God's design for marriage is the opposite of what the world's idea of marriage is. He compares marriage with Christ and the Church. Christ as the husband and the Church as His bride. Divorce was never intended...
In Malachi 2:16 God tells us that He hates divorce and marital separation. He designed marriage to be two separate individuals becoming one, and remain strong in Him.
Please, don't get me wrong...God loves us, and when we do divorce, He forgives us. However, that does not give us the green light to just ignore His ways. He gave us specific instructions on how to have a happy marriage in Ephesians 5:20-33. The problem is that we allow our flesh to get in the way. If we do not get what we want, or things don't happen when we
think they should, or we choose to disobey God's instructions for marriage, divorce becomes a viable option. That should not be so. Divorce should not even be an option--period.
I have been through a lot in my own marriage and have overcome many obstacles that would warrant divorce in the eyes of the world. We have been through separation, infidelity, loss and abuse. Many lessons were learned along the way. It is only by God’s grace that we made it through the very dark times in our marriage.
One thing that is never considered anymore is divorce. It is not an option. We are in this through thick and thin, good and bad, pain and joy. We are married for life. Period.
When we choose to take on that mentality, it really does help. It puts things in perspective and allows us to realize forgiving is our only option. Forgiveness is HUGE. We will definitely spend some time there during this study.
Before we begin this journey, I want you to shake off the world’s views and ideas of the culture in regards to marriage. Open your mind and heart to what the Word of God says about it.
I also want you to forget what your husband should
be doing and submit to God’s Will and the kind of wife He wants YOU to be. OK? OK!
Now the Lord God said, it is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a help meet suitable, adapted, and complementary for him. - Genesis 2:18
Even though help meet is two words, they are both the same and they come from the Hebrew words azar (aw-zar’) and ezer (ay’zer) and mean; surround, protect, or aid.
I also looked into some reference materials and found; cooperate with, serve, side with, go to bat for, save, snatch from danger, make healthy, balm, and aid.
On the flip side, (meaning the opposite); hinder, obstruct, hold back, block, frustrate, side against, discourage, harm, hurt, injure, kill, let die, make worse.
I found this to be pretty powerful. This COMPLETELY goes against our culture. Women want equality. We are women hear us roar!
We have thoughts like…
When he does his job, I will do mine.
He should love me like Christ loves the Church.
He doesn’t ‘deserve’ to be honored.
These are different times, the Bible was written thousands of years ago to a different culture.
We need to realize that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is UNCHANGING. He does not adapt with the times.
(Hebrews 13:8) He is also not impressed by our complaining and disobedient attitudes.
He made it very clear in
