DEDICATION
1.jpgI dedicate this book to the two women in my life who inspired me to focus on God’s will and purpose for my life. To my friends, Shay and Jen (not their real names), I say thank you for the inspiration. Although you will never read this book, your advice and examples gave me something I can pay forward.
Shay taught me to slow down and appreciate the time I have with my husband and children. As the last chapter of her life closed, Shay showed me how to fight for life and all it has to offer. Jen and I grew to become godly wives and mothers together, and she taught me even more in her last days. Through her pain and silence, Jen showed me the importance of pushing through, regardless of whether others hear you or not. She taught me to remain focused on completing assignments even when it seemed no one understood why or how things were being accomplished. Jen helped me to understand that I serve a divine purpose; this included being her friend as her life ended. To the families of Shay and Jen, I say thank you for sharing them with me. Our Lord and Savior gave them both rest and complete healing at the age of forty-seven. Now that I am forty-seven, I pray that my season (the number four represents seasons) and the things that I have completed (the number seven represents completion) touch someone as much as Jen and Shay touched me.
I thank my husband, Eric Kelley, for pushing me into my purpose. Thank you for being the person God chose to give me the seed that became my destiny and your legacy. Thank you for our beautiful girls, Shelkieta, Shiloh, Shahaira, and Shyah. Kieta, thanks for giving us Sage. To my girls, thanks for your hugs, kisses, and reminders that life is not so much about working as it is about living. I love you all so very much. I will make sure to always express my Life Action Word (LAW) to encourage you.
To my mom, Barbara Mack, and my sisters, Tracy, Karmen, and Kirsten, thanks for letting me be myself at all of our family gatherings and always celebrating my national holiday. You all know the importance of laughter and my birthday. Tashal Williams, thanks for a sisterhood that truly transcends time and space. Love ya.
PREFACE
1.jpgDay after day, we awake wondering what the day, the next hour, the next minute holds for us. Our belief that a breakthrough must be right around the corner keeps us constantly searching. We hold on to hope that life will finally reveal the answer we’ve been waiting for since the day we realized our lives are about more than the draining and often unfulfilling nine-to-five workday. We tend to look too deeply for answers; we believe someone else knows why we were born, so we search others for the answers to our questions. But when was the last time you asked God and allowed Him to show you His plan? Perhaps your purpose is standing before you, but you can’t see it because you are searching everywhere else. As we search, we miss the fact that we are serving, operating, and walking out the most basic purpose for which God placed us here on Earth.
The purpose of this book is to remind us that every day of our lives, we serve a purpose in the kingdom of God and to humankind. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations
(Psalm 33:11 NIV). The Scriptures tell us that many are called, but few are chosen (Matthew 22:14 KJV). This verse reminds us that there is a call on all our lives. We fulfill that call in the most basic, subconscious ways, although we may never realize the importance. All of us enjoy particular activities, and God uses our participation in those activities to encourage, empower, and educate others. We are all blessed with talents and spiritual gifts, which the Lord distributes as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:11).
You may be asking how this book differs from any other book about purpose. What makes my revelations different from the many blogs, seminars, motivational speeches, and purpose-finding adventures you have experienced? The answer is that this book focuses on the place where you are today rather than on where you should be or want to be in life. I want you to appreciate the daily events, activities, and people that are divinely appointed to you so that you can encourage, edify, empower, embrace, and enhance their lives.
Now that I have answered your questions, consider why it is that you continue to search. Why do you keep starting projects but never finishing them, claiming they are too hard, take too long, or don’t matter to enough people? Do you feel your life has no meaning, or that everyone around you are achieving things you never can or will? If so, remember that your purpose is powerful and impactful, even when you feel like a wallflower in your own life. I believe that you will enjoy your life more when you find your Life Action Word! Discovering and executing your daily purpose will open your eyes and allow you to achieve your divine purpose. This book will propel you into your kingdom purpose.
PART ONE:
THE HAY
38912.pngCHAPTER 1
LIFE’S NEEDLE-IN-A-HAYSTACK THEORY
1.jpgVision takes you where destiny already has you.
We often find ourselves looking, searching, and seeking for the one thing that will bring credence to our existence—the thing which we believe ties us to the very reason God created us. Trying to find a reason for being seems to be part of the human psychological makeup. And yet, very few have found that one thing which they believe solidifies their existence. The rest of us continue to dig deeper for the meaning and ultimate purpose of our lives. We have a model, a person who knew His purpose and call. That person, of course, is Jesus Christ. There were a few things he knew which kept Him focused on completing both His daily and divine purposes
