Summary of “You Just Need to Lose Weight" by Aubrey Gordon - Willie M. Joseph

    PART ONE

    MYTH 1

BEING FAT IS A CHOICE. IF FAT PEOPLE DON’T LIKE HOW THEY’RE TREATED, THEY SHOULD JUST LOSE WEIGHT.

In 2016, Us Weekly published a story about plus-size model Rosie Mercado. She lost 240 pounds by running, walking and Zumba, and says she walks 15,000 steps every day. We are reminded that our bodies are a choice, and that our choices are being judged. In an obesity epidemic, fat people must lose weight. No nation or jurisdiction has done so, revealing this strategy to be profoundly anti-fat, punitive, and ineffective.

It is an overtly biased belief in its commitment to assigning value to different body types. The belief that fat people can and should become thin is a predictor of individual anti-fat bias, according to researchers. Some fat people do choose fat bodies; some do not. This insistence that fatness is a choice isn't about the veracity of that claim, but about minimizing fat people's experiences. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder impacting androgen production and is also resistant to traditional weight-loss
