    INTRODUCTION

    A Word of Thanks to the Deep State

    Donald Trump argued that he had no Washington experience, was not part of the Washington establishment. Frum: The simplest explanation is that public trust in government has plummeted over the past 60 years. Only 9 percent of Republicans, or those leaning Republican, trust the government in Washington to do what is right, compared to 36 percent of Democrats. Most recently, the animus of the anti-government crowd has been directed at something characterized as the deep state. The origins of the term deep state date back at least a decade before Donald Trump's election.

    The idea was catnip to right-wing media outlets who saw it as a potential scapegoat. Income gap between America's haves and have-nots has grown over the past 40 years. Rise of new media franchises that catered to specific political groups contributed to deepening polarization. Ninety percent of gains following the Great Recession went to the top 10 percent. Avlon argues that most people who work in Washington are fundamentally good, well intentioned, and trying to make a positive impact.

    David Rothkopf: The character of the community in which our nation's business takes place is quite different from that which conventional wisdom suggests. He was struck by qualities of people in Washington you do not much hear or read about in the news these days. There was a sense of welcoming and teamwork that I have felt in many of my Washington jobs. Most of the time, my work was on Capitol Hill, but I also worked in the Brooklyn field office of Congressman Solarz. David Rothkopf has been in Washington for four decades and is still struck by the quality of the people he worked with.
