Summary of So Help Me God by Mike Pence - Willie M. Joseph

    Prelude

Vice President Joe Biden sat in the Senate Chamber to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election. He had always been loyal to President Donald Trump, but his loyalty to the Constitution required him to preside over Congress' vote count. The Capitol is democracy's sacred ground because it embodies its ideals. On January 6, Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States. On that day, he was forced to leave the Senate oor because of protests in the Capitol.

Since the 1850s, the room has served as an o ce of sorts for the vice president. On November 4, 2016, Secret Service agents were dealing with rioters in the Capitol. President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration was marred by protests over the result of the election. Secret Service Director James Comey says he felt resolve and a sense of duty to protect the Constitution. We can't stay here.

This o ce only has a glass door, and we can't protect you, Tim Giebels said. I pointed my nger at his chest and said, You're not hearing me, Tim. I'm not leaving.

Hoosier is the most widely recognized nickname for residents of any state in the union. The origin of the word may never be fully revealed. Hoosiers are tough, independent, hardworking, creative, and caring. They also have strong hearts and opinions but deliver them politely. Edward and Nancy Pence were city kids, from the Irish enclaves of south Chicago.

Dad served in the US Army in the Korean War. He was awarded the Bronze Star for leading rescue of a combat patrol stranded in a mine eld. The medal stayed in a drawer. Michael Richard Pence was born in 1959 and named after his Irish maternal grandfather. His mother, Mary Maloney, grew up in a small Irish town called Doonbeg.

Michael Pence's childhood home in Columbus, Ohio, was idyllic; memories of those days are some of my happiest. The Pence boys were rambunctious; Dad was on the road four days a week, meeting clients around the Midwest. Annie and Mary had Dad wrapped around their necks, and that never changed.  Music was a constant in the Pence household; Dad loved Frank Sinatra. I just have a lot of friends, my father said when I asked him why he gave little praise to his children.

He set a standard and expected his children to meet it. We would keep our word and treat those around us with respect, or we would hear from him. He says through words and courageous stands, leaders can inspire Americans to strive for great things. The vice president's mother had a passion for politics common to many rst-generation Americans.  The town's landscape was profoundly impacted by Cummins and its longserving CEO, J. Irwin Miller.

Miller's foundation commissioned innovative architects to design public buildings, turning the town into a mecca of striking midcentury design. Columbus was a company town, and Dad didn't work for either oil or paper companies. Mike Pence worked at Ray's Marathon, a fullservice gas station supplied by the oil company Dad led.  During that time, I had lost much of the weight that I was self-conscious about. I had transformed from someone unsure of himself to someone who was full of himself.

    Bends in the River

No free rides wasn't just a slogan in his household; you had to get the grades, too. In the Pence household, attending college was nonnegotiable. Dad knew how much, allowing for pizzas and movies, we could save after working forty hours a week. So I focused on my grades and put on a front, which paid off. At the start of my second semester, I pledged and was accepted into a fraternity.

I was Born Again is the story of a young man's decision to accept Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. The author attended Ichthus Festival, originally conceived as a Christian answer to Woodstock. Afterward, he found a volunteer counselor and prayed an altar call that changed his life forever. I felt forgiveness and a newness of life that is di cult to put into words, he writes. He devoured books such as John R. W. Stott's Basic Christianity and read the works of C.

    S. Lewis. Dad came to respect my faith; the depth of its conviction mirrored his own. When I was a freshman at Hanover, my grades were abysmal and my partying was out of control. I wanted to share Christ and live out the Gospel in my daily life. Informed by my faith, I was trying to be a man of integrity and serve the fraternity.

Pence: Dad once told me to make Hanover's fraternity the best damn social club on campus. He was a leader; I asked for his advice. In the following year, our house turned around and we had the best GPA and highest recruitment on campus. In the late 1970s, I was a proud Democrat and voted for President Carter. Through him, I began to understand the principles underpinning the U.S. system of government. By the time I left Hanover in 1981, I had given my life to Christ and begun a conservative political awakening.

the Beautiful Brunette with the Guitar

When I was a senior at Hanover, I registered to take the LSAT. I put incredible pressure on myself to ace the exam. Trying too hard sank my chances. The president of Hanover asked if I was interested in a job
