Images of Dodi Fayed and her boyfriend kissing while on a yacht in the Mediterranean sold to tabloids for millions. Henri Paul, deputy chief of security at the Ritz, was trained at a Mercedes-Benz course in Germany. The black Mercedes S280 is built for speed. Since she divorced, Queen Elizabeth II has refused the royal protection squad. Henri Paul loses control of his car as it careens toward a tunnel under the Pont de l'Alma. The Mercedes plummets into a concrete pillar and then an embankment wall.

April 20, 1978 London
Lady Diana Spencer's sister Jane is marrying Robert Fellowes, the queen's assistant private secretary. Both the bride and groom are closely tied to the royal family. The Spencer Tiara has been in the family for more than a century. It is an ornate diamond headpiece with a flower-shaped centerpiece. She's seen the way Sarah revels in all the attention her relationship with Prince Charles has brought her. The newlyweds will be moving into the Old Barracks at Kensington Palace.

Diana Spencer has told her family that she only wants to be with people and have fun and look after people
Diana's friends and family already call her Duch,

and makes small talk as they read over the elegant program detailing tonight's four-course menu, guest list, and entertainment. Prince Charles seems especially taken with a sporty-looking blond woman who keeps leaning over to him and whispering.

Prince Charles calls Diana every day for a week, then goes silent. Diana tries to play it cool, hoping to project an air of He knows where I am if he wants me. The thrill when he used to ring up was so immense and intense, it would drive her flatmates crazy.
November 1980 London
On November 4, 1980, Lady Diana attends a party at the Ritz solo. It's a belated fiftieth birthday for the queen's younger sister, Princess Margaret. Photographers lined up outside the hotel, some on ladders, documenting the glamorous guests. Diana, the Duchess of Wales, says she had a quiet night at home after Princess Margaret's party. She didn't think to question whether it might've been someone other than her who was going between the Royal Train and Camilla's house that night.
