Oprah's televised interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was one of the most ballyhooed in television history. Royal code breakers noted that on Meghan's left wrist was her late mother-in-law's Cartier diamond tennis bracelet. Suits actress Meghan Markle's failure to prepare for a vocation that was the royal equivalent of taking the veil was a surprise to many of her former colleagues. The Royals Confront a Post-Diana World
Diana, Princess of Wales' biography, explores the British royals through the eyes of their former courtiers and retainers. One-bedroom apartments filled with remnants from a life of palace duty. The creak of irrelevance and decay was evident at a memorial service for Lord Lichfield in 2006. Princess Anne, seated with the Greek party, looked dowdy and gruff, Andrew Parker Bowles like a walking pink gin. The Duchess of Cornwall's box-shaped hat capped off a dour air-stewardess suit.
Tallon murmured to me about a drug problem every time one of them got up to speak. After Diana's death, the royals had to be schooled to understand that the Crown is not a platform,
nor is the extended Royal Family the monarchy. Princess Diana's global fame hit Buckingham Palace like a meteor. Her heat singed the Queen's tiara for the first time. The monarchy had been shaken before by the perils of limelight and selfindulgence.
Edward VIII was a rock-star Prince of Wales in the 1920s, until his obsession with Wallis Simpson prompted him to abdicate. The Windsors believed that mass adulation as much as personal weakness turned Edward VIII from the throne. In exile in France, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor proved almost as much of a problem as if they had stayed in the UK. The Duke agitated constantly for a real job,
but it was impossible for the royals to decide which was more undesirable. The Queen Mother resented any glimpse of daylight shed on her monarch's private life.
