Summary of Endgame by Omid Scobie - Justin Reese
Prologue
In the early days of Queen Elizabeth II's reign, the royals often carried a black suit and tie, a symbol of her near-death. This was a crucial piece of reporting equipment for journalists, as it allowed them to quickly react to news of her death. On September 8, 2022, the Queen was bedridden at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, having accepted doctors' advice to rest. The next morning, an insider informed the journalist that it was not looking good, and the news was confirmed by ABC News' royal producer, Zoe Magee.
The death of Queen Elizabeth II had a significant impact on the journalist, as she had been a comforting presence during destabilizing times and was more popular than the monarchy itself. The writing of Endgame, which was influenced by events such as the introduction of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, the stripped of Prince Andrew's titles, Prince Harry's memoir, and the Queen's death, greatly impacted the narrative and cast of characters.
The Queen's Platinum Jubilee in the first half of 2022 was a footnote, as her death followed so quickly in September, leading to a year of upheaval and strife. The royal establishment has now installed an elderly new king while fending off accusations and misgivings from an exiled prince.
The author began writing Endgame in the summer of 2022, focusing on the Queen's passing and the ascension of her eldest son. The months following the Queen's death allowed the author to process the event and peer into the new era before contextualizing it. The author observed the scene of Queen Elizabeth II lying in state at Westminster Hall, where the Imperial State Crown resting atop the coffin was placed. The juxtaposition of the crown and the coffin emphasized the finality of the event, and the author felt a strange, commanding magic that day.
The author also noted the weight of history, tradition, and the aura of mystery and myth surrounding the Queen's death. The orb and scepter, which were symbols of the Crown, were also present in the scene. The author sympathized with the new king and queen, King Charles III and Queen Camilla, but found it difficult not to sympathize with them.
Queen Elizabeth II inhabited her stately role completely, guarding her personal life and respecting the demands of the Crown. King Charles has lived a full life in the public as an environmental activist, political meddler, businessman, flawed father, and philandering husband who destroyed Princess Diana's life. His personal failings and missteps are front-page fodder, and much of the British public will never fully forgive him for his role in Diana's tragic demise.
Queen Camilla remains to many as the other woman,
the third person in Charles and Diana's marriage and someone who caused pain and chaos within the royal family. Now, no veil of secrecy falls between the new King and Queen and their subjects, providing cover and inscrutable power.
The monarchy is facing challenges in boosting the popularity of King Charles, who has spent most of his life waiting and planning for his ascension. Charles, a stubborn eccentric who has spent most of his life waiting and planning for his ascension, has been a thorn in the side of the institution. Despite being well-liked by world leaders and global power figures, Charles was never fully embraced by power brokers within the system, the Palace operators, and partisans with links to the British establishment. Charles's quirks and entitled behavior have alienated him from the institutional hidden forces that could change his popularity overnight, leaving him to take matters into his own hands, often with disastrous results.
Charles knows his reign will be a transitional one, an intervening sovereignty that must happen before his elder son, William, takes over at a far younger age and attempts to breathe new life into a desiccated monarchical system. The brewing power struggle between the favored prince and the unpopular king is Shakespearean, a familial tug-of-war waged both onstage and off that still has the potential to unravel the monarchical tapestry.
Charles and William are the perfect example of why this particular family business often teeters on the brink. Harry's decision to defect
to America widened an already growing rift between the pair, and William now considers his brother an outsider, especially since the release of Harry's memoir.
William and Kate of Sussex, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have become a committed and driven team within the royal family. However, their role in the bigger royal story remains as important as ever, as allegations of bullying, misogyny, racism, and image manipulation remain largely ignored by the Palace. Any promises made after their departure, including a focus on diversity within the royal households, have proved little more than PR-friendly gloss-overs.
The institution of the monarchy is in increasingly desperate straits, with many feeling that the monarchy is losing relevancy. To stay relevant, the system leans on patriotism to shore up its purpose. In the first year of his reign, King Charles III has received a healthy amount of support, but declining popularity polls show that the good favor of the country can only last so long. The bigger question remains: how can a former pampered prince who is now an aging king keep the attention of those who already feel the monarchy is less necessary than ever?
The Firm's public ordeals, knee-jerk reactions, and family discord have created a life raft mentality that has long made their never complain, never explain
mantra impossible to live by. The rot has set in, and it is eating away at the monarchy's undergirding. Without Queen Elizabeth II, who is there to offer a counterpoint and stop the rot from spreading?
In late 2020, the author's first book, Finding Freedom, revealed the backroom machinations and family betrayals that forced the royal couple out of the House of Windsor. However, it also put the author in the middle of a family war, which scared the family and angered powerful Palace operatives. The author is now a perceived source of trouble for the institution, as they know and share too much about the deceptions, malice, and defensive posturing of an unstable family business and an institution in decline. The author has witnessed the human damage done by the royal establishment and the Queen's achievements during her seventy-year reign.
The author fears that by continuing to ignore the ongoing constitutional corruption in the Palace's inner sanctum and enabling a cabal of courtiers and the British media to call the shots, the royal institution is risking untold damage to the Queen's legacy. King Charles and Prince William have already displayed signs that they are allowing selfish agendas, a culture of cover-ups and PR trickery, and family discord to take over the House of Windsor.
The information shared in Endgame is sourced from over a decade of personal reporting files and conversations with those who have played a part in seminal moments, including friends, professional acquaintances, Palace aides, courtiers, insiders from the world of politics and media, and royal family members themselves.
The Queen and Her Piper
Elizabeth II’s Final Days
On September 6, 2022, Pipe Major Paul Burns began his day at Balmoral Castle, a royal estate in the Scottish Highlands, to wake the Queen.
This was the first piping session for the Queen since her seventy-year reign. Burns's piping session was scheduled to begin thirty minutes later due to the Queen's ailing health and need for rest. The Queen met with Boris Johnson to accept his resignation as prime minister, and then met with
