THE ROYALS PEOPLE
Why We Love This Family
Some people see a contradiction in freedom-loving America’s fascination with royalty. Why not have it both ways?
American Wedding Celebrants: For those not lucky enough to travel, there were stateside viewing parties, among them in New York City (breakfast at a Manhattan hotel)
Yes, Americans are proud of our democratic government, the we-the-people brand of political representation we secured after giving the British overlords the boot during the Revolutionary War. In the nearly two and a half centuries since King George III and his dreaded Redcoats, or any other crowned tyrant, last wielded power over this egalitarian land, we’ve never looked back.
Yet even if most of us can’t imagine bowing our heads to a stranger with a fancy title, there’s still a large part of the population that admires and enjoys the British monarchy, especially the crowns and palaces and carriages and other gilt-edged trimmings. To the average contemporary citizen, they seem both rich in history and wonderfully exotic. How else to explain the millions of loyalists who tuned in early in the morning to watch the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May (opposite) or the runaway popularity of a series like Netflix’s The Crown or the websites that exhort us to Steal Duchess Kate’s Classic Summer Looks!
all summer long?
As a cultural phenomenon, America’s love of the royals is really not contradictory at all. After all, the imperious monarchs who irked us in the past have mellowed considerably—those shiny gold-braided uniforms are mostly for show these days. Their only power over us today is to arouse our imaginations and inspire us and, when great joy or tragedy occasionally strikes within the House of Windsor, to stir our emotions. The British royals are good fun. They put on a good show. And with the arrival of a youthful new generation who are more open and accessible, they allow the rest of us to see that in many ways we’re a lot alike (minus the fascinators).
Welcome to a special edition of People in which we celebrate the British royal family of today. It features photos of four generations of Windsors as you have never seen them before and fascinating essays about how they became who they are today, as well as articles that explore what might have happened if key events—like the death of Princess Diana and the decision of the Queen’s uncle to give up his crown for love—had never occurred. We chronicle the royal family’s many official visits to the United States and offer a preview of the upcoming ABC-People TV event The Story of the Royals. The final pages go to the family’s new attraction Meghan, a real-life American princess. As we said, they put on a good show.

Modern Family
Tradition still matters. But led by the younger generation, the Windsors are embracing the future
I’m a father of three; I have to tone it down now,
the motorcycle-loving prince joked as he tested out a bike on the Isle of Man on June 6. Kate has said she’s terrified
when he rides.
The Queen made a surprise visit to London Fashion Week in February and sat in the front row with Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
Queen Elizabeth and her prince of 70 years, Philip, shared a laugh at the Braemar Highland Gathering in Scotland in 2015.
On the final day of her 2015 tour of Germany, the Queen greeted children waiting outside her Berlin hotel.
"William [in London in May] has great depth of understanding in a way that you never expect from such a public figure, and yet
