    A Special COVID-19 Introduction

    This book was written to transform people’s lives. To develop physical, mental and emotional resilience in times of difficulty. It’s a powerful book that will allow you to RISE when you feel beaten down, remain strong in times of adversity and succeed against the odds.

    There is no more important time to develop the skills of resilience than now. I first wrote on physical and mental toughness many years ago in a book titled Indomitable to help elite soccer players develop the resilience necessary to succeed at the highest level in the competitive arena of the sport. I have re-written that material in a new context—to help people in their career and personal lives in order to overcome the challenges we face with the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this book is simple: adapt, develop and thrive. No matter what the world throws at us.

    I have seen many lives impacted in a devastating way; people losing their jobs, suffering with fear, anxiety and overwhelm. People scared for their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

    I wanted to provide a solution, an opportunity to face these challenges and difficulties together in a resilient and powerful way. I believe the training in this book does that.

    I have deliberately refrained from referencing COVID-19 throughout the book, because I want you to focus, not on the pandemic, but instead on the tangible events of your life and how to respond positively and proactively to the those events—making your journey through this book a real-world training. Despite not making it a focus—every recommendation applies.

    Training resilience means coping with job loss, financial strain and health concerns. It means positively dealing with your fears, anxiety and worry. It’s about managing stress and confidently RISING to whatever challenge you face in these unprecedented times. It’s knowing you can—and will—prevail. No. Matter. What!

    This book is the by-product of my own resilience lessons. The capacity to endure has been modelled by my parents, Chris and Annette and taught by my mentors Mark Divine and Kynan Bridges. They learnt resilience and I trust are better people and players for it.

    Introduction

    Within this material we are going to explore resilience, in fact, we are going to train resilience—the ability to have mental toughness and physical robustness to be able to endure adversity, overcome challenges and difficulties and expand the boundaries of what was seemingly impossible to what becomes inherently natural.

    That is: you will become indomitable—impossible to subdue or defeat.

    We do I mean by train resilience? My mentor Dr Stephen Franson emphasised, We don’t fall back on what we know—we fall back on what we train on. Meaning, when the going gets tough, you default to your weakest link.

    If you don’t train, you don’t RISE to your being your best self during crisis. If you train, you can cope and adapt to nearly anything. Training is the key. Training prepares you, equips you and readies you for the challenges you will face, now and in the future.

    It is going to require more from you than you’ve given in the past. It is going to require more than most people are willing to give. However, the benefits of resilience are that you are able to achieve more than you ever imagined. You will become physically stronger, mentally tougher and emotionally more capable of facing and overcoming adversity, challenges and difficulties. Most importantly, you will have a sense of significance and greater experiences of success and achievement.

    At the end of each chapter is an Indomitable Action Plan, these are the resilience building exercises that will develop your capacity to RISE in the face of challenge, difficulty and adversity. Make sure you invest in these actions in order to get the full benefit of this program.

    This may very well be one of the most important and significant journeys of your life. I can’t promise you how it will impact your life—what I can say is; the impact will be significant, dramatic and lasting. It will influence every aspect of your life, improving productivity and performance as well as creating a sense of confidence and certainty that will move you forward to a greater and more fulfilling experience of life.

    Before You Begin: The Indomitable Mind Frame

    It is the brain, not the heart or lungs that is the critical organ. – Roger Bannister

    Roger Bannister was the first person to break the four-minute mile. If you’re not familiar with the history, it was believed that it was physically and humanly impossible to run a mile in under four minutes. Medical practitioners, scientists, trainers—everybody agreed that there were limits to the capacity of the human body.

    Until Roger Bannister came along.

    On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister disproved them all. He ran the mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds, shattering not only the world record at the time—but the beliefs around what was possible for the human body.

    Within a year, fifty-two other people had broken the four-minute mile.

    Since then, it has become clear that the boundaries we believe exist for the limitations of our bodies are false. We are capable of more than we ever imagined.
