About this ebook

Welcome to the independent publishing revolution. If that sounds like a slightly dramatic opening statement, please know that it is not an exaggeration; the growth of self-publishing over the past decade has triggered nothing less than a seismic shift in the book industry. Everyone has always been capable of being an author; it was not until recently, however, that we all had the opportunity to share our talents, knowledge and words with the world. We all have stories to share, and now we can do so freely and easily.

Author Mastery will show you exactly how to do just that. In fact, we'll do more than that, I will show you how to:

  1. Effortlessly write a quality book—even if you don't believe you can write.
  2. Publish and market your book to bestseller status—even if you don't have a platform.
  3. Craft a compelling presentation—even if you're not a confident speaker.
  4. Design and deliver a high-end, high-value in-house treatment program or online course with stunning conversion rates—even if you don't feel like you are an expert or authority in your field.

I call this our 4P's Formula: The Pen, the Podium, the Practice and the Product. These four elements sit on the cover of this book, in the Author Mastery logo. It's these four elements, that when harnessed, will position you as the 'go to expert' in your field and drive a flood of new patients to your practice. It will also launch your speaking career and pave a way for you to generate passive income through online programs that change the lives of your patients—even if they can't see you in person!

Excited? You have every reason to be!

Dr See Yeung Yao—a new graduate chiropractor—was excited when we worked together on a seminar which generated 176 leads of which 40 people scheduled care, most coming two times per week and paid for 12 months of care, grossing over $200,000.00. From one event!

Top Suthayakom opened a whole new niche in sleep apnea for his practice, making him a "go to expert" in a new and emerging field.

I added $2.8M to my existing practice income in the niche of arthritis over an 8-year period while almost doubling my service fee—creating massive leverage that only expert status and authority provides.

It's wonderful to be a chiropractor and an author. There's nothing else that offers such a profound and instant impact. The days where you have to contend with gatekeepers, rejection letters, editors and other forces that dictate which books do and don't get read are fast receding in the rear-view mirror. Now, you dictate the level of your own success—both an empowering and daunting notion.

As a health practitioner, I know you want to make an impact in your field and that you have an important message to share with people. The biggest problem is that because you are a health practitioner and most likely, not a professional writer, you might feel like it is an impossible task to author a book. I will help you overcome this doubt and assist you in sharing a compelling story that will help you generate new patients and have a greater impact on your existing patients. In addition to this, I will help you produce a seminar or conference to be able to take that message out into the public and deliver keynote presentations, build your platform and create content and engagement. I want you to be able to deliver a transformational journey for your patients

So, extinguish your doubts, get ready to work hard and in return, reap the results of sharing your wealth of knowledge with the world.

    Who am I?

My name is Dr Marcus Chacos and I am a best-selling author and Chiropractor practicing in Australia. I have written The Arthritis Solution: Prevent, Manage and Alleviate the pain of arthritis – Naturally! and Self Mastery which turned into Amazon top sellers. I have worked with many practitioners to create books that help reframe their practices and generate profitable income, including topics such as sleep apnoea and ‘exercising through the golden years’.

Being an author has changed my own practice in significant ways. For instance, I was able to generate $20,000 cash in a week from The Arthritis Solution. During one week, I had five patients who all presented with arthritis and when it came to the Report of Findings and Care Plan Delivery, I gave them a copy of my book and detailed how we would apply this process to their care. The confidence it provided the patient and the authority I demonstrated resulted in each of those four patients paying $4,000, upfront, in advance for their 12 months of care. I called this the $20,000 business card because the effectiveness of having a published book and the authority it brings resulted in 100% client conversions and an excellent payday.

This same book also ended up creating 80 new patients per week for my associate and generated $250,000 in 12 weeks. After the book was written, we held a seminar that seated 100 people and when the first session booked out, we booked a second evening. 176 people attended the seminar in total and I offered all guests a free initial consultation. After we went through the standard consultation procedure and x-rays, we went through the protocol for the Arthritis Solution. As a result, 40 people booked in for a 12-month care program, most patients were booked twice or three times per week, meaning more than 800 visits per year and generating more than $250,000 over the next 12 months for my associate.

Writing these books has allowed me to develop my niche and because of this, I have been able to increase my prices and grow my own practice substantially over a period of three and a half years. I have also been able to open up my personal and development work for my patients by creating an online education program. Over 1700 people have purchased this program, in more than 34 countries, gaining me international exposure and helping me to impact lives in many positive ways.

    PART-1 -BEFORE YOU BEGIN WRITING

    Reasons to Write a Book

There are many reasons to write a book, but I consider there to be three main reasons.

You want to establish authority or expert status in a field—This is what this book largely focuses on. This mainly applies to professionals who have spent much of their lives doing things other than writing. As a chiropractor, your expertise lies not in your writing, but in what you’ve done with other areas in your life. Just because you aren’t a professional writer doesn’t mean you’re not qualified to write a book. We’re all writers, and there are people who can help you iron out any issues that appear in your manuscript.

You have a message to share—You are incredibly passionate about what they have learned and want to make a bigger impact in the world. Equally, you have unique knowledge or skills, a proven system or process or you simply want to bring the wisdom you have to a wider audience.

You want to make money—This should, in my opinion, be your last reason—and, somewhat ironically, is often the path to making the least money, if it is your sole focus. You won’t be passionate about your topic, you won’t have the expertise to tell people valuable information and you’ll ultimately waste your time attempting to sell poor quality contents to a suspicious and disinterested audience. On the other hand, a passionate, knowledgeable person (even without writing experience) sharing a compelling value-adding story is a path to making money. On a side note, Author Mastery is not a get-rich-quick scheme. If you approach writing this way, you’ll likely be disappointed. If you do want to marry your passion for sharing with the platform of writing—Author Mastery will not disappoint.

Why do you want to Write?

Before I get into the nuts and bolts of how to self-publish—and make money doing it—we need to start at the beginning and firstly, understand what your intentions for writing a book may be. I previously mentioned what my main three reasons are, however, yours may be different. You’ll never write a good book about a topic that you’re uninterested or have little expertise in. Sure, you can write that book; it might even sell. You’ve no doubt read some terrible books in your day; perhaps you’ve even thought, hey, this is easy.

But the simple fact is this: if you write a good book, it’s much easier to sell it. Exponentially easier. There are plenty of bad books that sell, but most of the really bad books never sell more than a couple copies. This is doubly true for self-published books, which can languish in obscurity in the Kindle Store, unnoticed until the ends of time.

I’m not claiming that you have to be a professional writer to pen a great book. Good writing skills are always a plus—and if you have expertise in a subject, you’re providing people with a tremendous service by writing about it! If your writing skills are undeveloped, that’s okay—you can, if need be, hire people later down the line to help you with these concerns.

However, if you want to write a good book, you need to have something to share. Think about what you know—it can be within your realm of expertise, or it could be, perhaps, a life truth that you’ve discovered. An example of the former is Let’s Get Digital by David Gaughran. He’s an indie author, and that book is a comprehensive, well-researched compendium of everything you need to know at the beginning of your self-publishing journey.

It’s clear that he knows what he’s talking about, and that the book is born from the fires of experience—which is why it’s no surprise that it has become the best-selling and top-rated guide to self-publishing on Amazon.

On the other hand, we see books such as Viktor E. Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning and Adrian Kulp’s We’re Pregnant! The First-Time Dad’s Pregnancy Handbook, which are far more personal. These books share truths that each man discovered by living his life—truths that they believed should be shared.

Other people seem to agree: Man’s Search for Meaning has garnered almost 10,000 reviews, and sold 16 million copies, whereas Kulp’s book is the number one best seller in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology genre on Amazon. These figures go to show just how much people enjoy reading about others personal journeys – they are more relatable and within reach.

It sounds cliché, of course, but it’s true: share some part of yourself with the world and enhance the lives of others, and the world will reciprocate. Why? The most powerful advertising mechanism your book has is not your platform. It is not your understanding of Amazon’s algorithms. It is not your banner ads or your social media accounts. These are all useful—greatly so, in fact. But they all pale in comparison to the power of word of mouth. The books that succeed do so because people love them. It touches the readers.

To generate word-of-mouth, people need to do more than like your book—they need to love your book—and they’ll never love your book if it reads like you’re trying to cash in on the Kindle revolution, or you’re writing about something that you find mildly interesting.

If the book is an expression of who you are and what you do—it can be crafted into a best seller—and I’ll show you how.

It starts with the truth though; the book as a mirror. Bleed on the page. Help people and they will return the favour by helping your book grow. If your only goal is to make money, people will figure this out as that feeling permeates the pages, turning people off and they will not buy your book. Making money is fine, but it can’t be your only goal. Making money as a non-fiction author is a by-product of a greater goal—finding a need and fulfilling it.

So, find something that you want to write about. Something to read about. Marry the two together—and the magic begins!

    Benefits of an eBook

While I firmly believe, as I will discuss throughout this book, the significant importance of having a book in print, I am extremely pro e-book. People are interested in buying e-books primarily because of the ease and accessibility of digital media. We know that Kindle is selling at a rate that is outstripping print books and we know that all of the other digital platforms are similarly growing. The fact that most people now use tablets, smart phones and their computers at a greater rate and have these devices with them when they travel, makes e-books very popular. It is easier to have your smart phone in your pocket and access your book on the phone than it is to carry a print book with you.

The cost of purchasing an e-book is a lot cheaper compared to the price of a print book, with many authors selling their e-books for between 99 cents and $2.99. Besides that, there are also many e-books online that can be downloaded for free.

If you need to highlight or bookmark a part of the book, it can be done with the touch of a finger. This is especially helpful if you are studying a particular e-book or taking notes.

Whether you like it on a personal level or not, many would argue that e-books are the book of the future.

    Kindle Facts – Addressing Doubts

You’ve got something to say. You’re excited about writing a book, and you think that people will connect with your ideas. However, you are having a couple of doubts and are perhaps second-guessing this whole self-publishing thing. Most indie authors make less than $500 a year? There are over six million eBooks out there? How can I possibly succeed?

First of all, it’s cheap. If you have Microsoft Word and a computer, you can release a book for free—yes, for free—which means there’s zero risk. I’d highly recommend spending money on a professional cover and some decent formatting—and I’ll explain why, later—but even with these costs, you can release a professional book for under $300.

Secondly, the reader market is huge; in the last 10 years, Author Earnings reported that Amazon have sold between 20 million and 90 million kindle devices. That doesn’t include all the other e-readers and platforms you can read eBooks on, including the iPad. These sales have now been surpassed and continues to grow.

According to Editage, in 2018, self-published books made up 30-40% of all eBook sales. This figure will only rise as more Kindles, iPads and other e-readers are sold—and the trend is in your favour.
