Fifty years after the last of the pandemics, a depleted society that blames itself for what has happened casts its mind back to what it believes were more gratifying and moralistic times. If the people returned to old values, shunned the path of temptation, and embraced domestic discipline, then surely forgiveness and salvation would be theirs?
And so it became.
The man is the ruler of the household, and the woman looks up to him. The man will go out into the great new world, bring home the credits, and will be worshiped as the great provider he is. He will see to it that his wife and family are provided for to the best of his ability, and in doing so will contribute to the overall rejuvenation of society.
The woman will support him in his task, and obey his word. She will see to it that his life is as stress-free as possible, providing him with a welcoming and comfortable home. She will tend to all domestic tasks, leaving his mind free of concerns. She will offer him emotional support as well as seeing to his sexual pleasures, and she will do so in a selfless and enthusiastic manner. She will ensure that her appearance is pleasing to his eyes at all time, and she will take great pride in doing so. In other words, she will be the perfect wife to the perfect husband in the perfect home, and all will be just ... well ... perfect.
If not, 'The System' will see to it that the required guidance ... as well as corporal discipline ... is provided to ensure that everything in the home runs as smoothly as it should, thus maintaining equilibrium within society as a whole.

Fifty years after the last of the pandemics, life has returned to normal: normal being that the rich and powerful live lives of privilege and comfort in the burbs, while the not-so-rich are kept at arm’s length, safely tucked away and out of sight in what is left of the great cities.

Well, that’s fair enough, isn’t it? After all, you can’t be expected to have to look at the results of your failings every time you open the front door, now can you? It’s basically not reasonable to burden a whole section of society with perpetual guilt.

There simply wasn’t enough vaccine to go around, and that was that. Anyway, most of those who couldn’t afford it—I mean, obtain it—survived, and they’re probably happy enough. It’s not like they live boring lives: they are rebuilding the cities—for themselves, I might add—and as long as they are content to stay there and leave everyone else in peace, then that’s perfectly fine, isn’t it?

But guilt is difficult to shed, and in a warped shot at repentance, the saved society began to look back to more gratifying and moralistic times. If they returned to old values, shunned the path of temptation, and embraced domestic discipline, then surely salvation would await them?

And so it became.
