LESSONS OF INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOANALYSIS (1915)

LESSON 1 INTRODUCTION
Freud proposes in this series of conferences to give a series of snapshots of what psychoanalysis is to a lay public. Throughout this first talk he is outlining warnings about PSYCHOANALYSIS IS CONDEMNED TO BE HATED BY SOCIETY THANKS TO THE UNPLEASANT TRUTHS THAT IT REVEALS.
He begins by admitting to the audience that he assumes they know that PSYCHOANALYSIS IS A KIND OF TREATMENT FOR NEUROTICS. However he warns that he is a DIFFERENT TREATMENT. What is distinctive is that while in most medical treatments the therapist tries to instill in the patient an almost blind certainty about the success of the cure, THE PSYCHOANALYST MUST WARN THEIR PATIENT OF THE LACK OF GUARANTEES OF SUCCESS ASSURED AND OF THE DIFFICULTIES THAT SHOULD BE OVERCOME TO OBTAIN PROGRESS.

Freud claims that as a lecturer he will do the same with the public that he should do with his patients: explain patiently about the INEVITABLE IMPERFECTION OF PSYCHOANALYSIS. He also says that MOST PEOPLE'S WAY OF THINKING PREPARE THEM NOT TO ACCEPT PSYCHOANALYSIS. However, he affirms that there are always people for whom the excitement of new knowledge matters more than the antipathy of evil spirits. Paradoxically, as an example and number of these bad spirits he cites the European war of 1914-18 that was taking place at that time.

The first of the DIFFICULTIES is what has to do with TRAINING IN PSYCHOANALYSIS. In medicine, the practices to become a doctor are clear. The lessons are then held in the anatomy, chemical preparations, the resulting data of the nervous system, etc.

Psychoanalytic treatment is totally different. It is a CONVERSATION BETWEEN THE PATIENT AND THE ANALYST in which the former narrates his life, exposes his complaints and confesses desires and fears. The analyst, starting from what the patient says, tries to orient him towards certain implicit directions in what he said and observes the reactions that his actions provoke. Immediately afterwards, Freud evokes and reflects on the POWER OF WORDS, the almost magical character they had in ancient times. And he claims that we cannot afford to underestimate this.

He also mentions the fact that the conversation between patient and analyst DOES NOT TOLERATE THE PRESENCE OF A THIRD PARTY. This also has the consequence that one cannot give an opinion about psychoanalysis except by hearsay, if one has not experienced it. A good transmission depends on the degree of knowledge that the person who tells us has about the subject, as well as how much we believe him, what degree of confidence we have in his knowledge.

Freud, beyond admitting the possibility of obtaining knowledge about the psychic through SELF-OBSERVATION, says that THIS WAY IS LIMITED. The possibility of ACCESSING THE KNOWLEDGE OF PSYCHOANALYSIS HAS TO BE
