Part I: Introduction

My work life began with a career in education. I was part of this scene for quite a few years before I decided that the money I was making just wasn’t enough. I needed to make a little more if I was going to support my family properly and that’s what led me to start a career in sales and marketing. There was only one problem with this jump in career paths. I had no persuasion skills. I didn’t know how to sell anything to anyone and it was a skill that was going to become essential to my ability to make a living.

I just didn’t seem to have that special something that persuasive people always seem to have. I didn’t know how to make people instinctively trust me and I didn’t know how to make people feel confident. It was an important skill but it was one that I was dedicated to learning. So I did what anyone hoping to acquire a new skill does. I started researching everything I could find on persuasion and the way everyone else was using it to succeed in life.

There are examples of persuasion absolutely everywhere. It’s in books, movies, magazines. There are seminars, published reports and more available practically wherever you look. So I started reading and watching everything. I wanted to learn all there was to know about persuasion and how I could use it to help me. When I found everything that I believed there was to find I decided that I couldn’t hoard it all to myself. I decided to share it with everyone I possibly could.

So I wrote this book for just that reason. If you’re looking to become more persuasive it’s absolutely imperative that you get whatever help you can. Convincing people to do what you want them to do isn’t easy. So what are you going to do about it? Reading through this book will start you off on your path to being a great persuader before you know it.

Chapter 1- Staying Ethical

So what is persuasion? It’s a skill that people can and do learn throughout their lives. But it’s a skill that different people learn to different extents throughout their lives. It’s a way of gaining the trust of people that you may not know very well in a very short amount of time. It can also be used in nearly any situation whether it’s important (which we will focus on in this book) or not.

Most of the time you’ll use persuasion to achieve important goals. You may hear that this is something that no one should do because it’s forcing people to do something they don’t want. You may hear that it is evil to sway someone’s opinion but this is completely false. What you’re going to be doing with persuasion is not evil. It’s a way of conveying your beliefs and opinions to others but it won’t be destructive to other people.

Now there are some who will use persuasion unethically. It’s not our intent to say that persuasion is only used in positive circumstances because that’s not the case at all. It’s possible that people will use persuasion for good or bad. If you dedicate yourself to using persuasion only in positive ways and don’t hurt others with it then you’re exactly the type of person that deserves to learn all about this
