EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF WAR ON ENVIRONMENT
THE ARMED FORCES ARE THE ONES THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE GREATEST EXTENT TO POLLUTING THE ENVIRONMENT
And this is so, not only in times of war but also in times of peace. The activities of this social sphere - production, testing and maintenance of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons - generate significant quantities of toxic substances that contaminate the earth's soil, air and water.
Although in recent years awareness of this phenomenon has begun, many governments do not provide sufficient data to "denounce" the excessive use of resources by the military. This lack of data prevents establishing precise limits to the harmful activity of the armed forces.
The most specific data comes from the United States, undoubtedly because most of the military activities worldwide are carried out in that country. On the other hand, the data offered by third-world countries in which military spending rose from 6% in 1965 to 20% in the mid-80s is scarce.

Land and air: the battlefields at home
The growth of the armed forces and technological advances in terms of weapons, such as reactors, aircraft carriers, tanks, submarines, etc., is proportional to the increase in air and land space that these arsenals need to maneuver. Under the excuse of technological development, the armed forces have been increasing their power over society's resources by occupying areas of productive land that are isolated from public access.
The activities of the armed forces affect not only the portions of land that are formally under their control, but also areas that extend far beyond the military bases. For example, NATO maneuvers in West Germany caused irreparable damage to crops, forests, and private property.
2% OF THE TOTAL UNITED STATES LAND IS DEDICATED TO MILITARY PURPOSES. In addition, the Pentagon has control of about 8,100 square kilometers of land outside of its country.
For its part, the former Soviet Union also dedicated a large portion of territory to the activities of the armed forces, in Kazakhstan the land allocated for this purpose was greater than that used for growing wheat.
In other European countries, such as the Netherlands, the land under military control reaches 2% of the total territory, but indirect use reaches 10%. In the former West Germany, the armed forces had access to 6,000 square kilometers of land, which was almost three times the land area of
