THE HISTORICAL NEED OF SOCIAL INEQUALITY
Some Basics of Stratification
The authors start from the proposition that there is no society WITHOUT CLASSES or NOT STRATIFIED. They propose to argue that STRATIFICATION is a universal necessity of every social system. They also argue that prestige is evenly distributed among the main types of positions.
The authors propose two lines of analysis: one, directed to the UNIVERSAL and the other, to the PARTICULAR. Thus, they seek to understand the concrete manifestations in different societies, although they emphasize the universal (that is, what is repeated in all societies).

The functional need for stratification
FOR DAVIS AND MOORE, STRATIFICATION IS A FUNCTIONAL NEED BECAUSE EVERY SOCIETY NEEDS TO MOTIVATE AND PLACE INDIVIDUALS IN THE SOCIAL STRUCTURE
THE SOCIETY, AS A MECHANISM with functions to cover, needs to distribute its members in SOCIAL POSITIONS and induce them to carry out the tasks that they imply. Thus, the SOCIETY has to MOTIVATE individuals to wish to occupy certain POSITIONS and then to wish to fulfill the required tasks.
A COMPETITIVE SYSTEM gives more importance to the motivation to get positions, while a NON-COMPETITIVE one gives more importance to the fulfillment of the tasks.
For the authors it is inevitable that the COMPANY has a system of REWARDS and their distribution. Thus, the rewards and their distribution are part of the SOCIAL ORDER.
There are different types of REWARDS:
• There are those that contribute to SUSTAINMENT and COMFORT.
• Those that contribute to FUN and DISTRACTION.
• Those that promote SELF-RESPECT and SELF-FIRMATION.
These REWARDS are distributed differentially throughout the COMPANY, depending on the positions. Each position has rights and awards linked to the duties that are involved in it. As the rights and privileges of the different positions are UNEQUAL, every society has to be STRATIFIED (divided into levels, strata). Thus, for the authors, SOCIAL INEQUALITY is a resource through which societies ensure that the most important positions are occupied by the most qualified people.
The two determinants of rank
The best rewards are given in positions that:
• They are more important to society
• They require more TRAINING or TALENT
The first type concerns function and the second concerns means. The SOCIETY has to
