About the Author
To all the single sisters around the world, particularly my sisters, Gertrude and Georgia. I pray that my granddaughters, Jamie, Mia, and little Miss Chloe—who is becoming a young lady—and my great-granddaughters, Brooklyn and Malani, will also be blessed by this book! If there should be more granddaughters and great-granddaughters in generations to come, I pray that they too will be blessed with this book as well. This is also dedicated to my nieces—Phyllis, Val, Deletha, Joi, Ashley, Phinesse, Kadesia, Zemirah, Mina, Jasmine, Abrisia, Jena, Bailey, Haley, Jada, Julia, Cheyenne, Christian, Dakota, Annaleise, Ivy, Imari, Quailaan, Maddie, Morgan, and Zoi—and to my childhood friend Ms. Augusta Brown-Hatter. It is my prayer for you to find satisfaction in being a chosen child of God in your singleness.
Acknowledgments
First and foremost, I would like to thank God for the valuable gift of writing and exhortation. I want to thank my friend Sarah Binion for assisting with the final editing on this project. In memory, I would like to thank God for my late husband, Rev. Theron Hawkins, who has been my greatest supporter. Although he is not here in the flesh, I am confident that he will forever be watching over me. I also would like to thank God for my late mother, Evangelist Rowena Washington Fowler, who had the superior gift of writing but never had an opportunity to publish any of her works. I believe that her special gifting has been passed on to me. I believe that I am writing this book and the other books that will come to live out her desire for the many writings that she would write for others to use for oratorical speeches on special occasions. My mother remains an encourager for me. Finally, I would like to acknowledge all the single ladies who inspired me to write this book. I want to especially thank those who are still trying to discover who they are in their singleness. Also, I would like to dedicate this to the late Ms. Lisa Benn, who worked with me in the infant stages of this book. Rest well.
Introduction
This book is a must-read for ladies who are single and dealing with their singleness from a negative perspective. This book is also for ladies who are happy in their singleness and for those who need affirmation and the support to know they are enough. This book is also for the satisfied single ladies with the right attitude. It is my desire for every single lady to read this book to gain an increased insight into how precious they are to God. It is my desire that men of all statuses will read this book to gain insights into the journeys of single women. Single ladies, it is my prayer that this book will empower you to believe that you are worthy to be considered as someone of great value.
Single ladies, you came from a valuable and powerful source! You are the G! For too long, some men have devalued women and taken advantage of them as the weaker vessel! Face the truth, women, God has declared that we are the weaker vessel (1 Peter 37). It can sometimes be difficult for women to contain and hold on to what they have. We are givers by nature. Women, we are weaker emotionally—but not mentally. We can handle three tasks at the same time while receiving instructions about the next task and not miss a beat. Mentally, we train for what we desire to accomplish. Emotionally, there are times when our vessels cannot handle another broken promise.
When I visualize a weaker vessel, I picture something that must be handled carefully—not because it is not of great value but because the value is so high. Each person God created is of great value, whether male or female. God gave up His only Son for us! Who would give up someone (Jesus, God’s only Son) of great value for something that has no value? This lesson of God giving up His only Son teaches me that there is value in everyone. If there was no value in you, he would not have redeemed us with such a great price: His only Son.
Women, we are of great value! When we allow men to become a part of our journeys, they must respect the value in us and handle us with extreme care. This kind of treatment should begin with our fathers. I encourage fathers to treat their girls like they are special and to let them know that they are beautiful and loved. Men should never allow another man to affirm their daughters. The first affirmation a girl receives should come from her father.
God has created women to be gentle, and because of our gentleness, we can easily become emotionally broken. When we become broken, the gentleness can harden. When this happens, we can lose and change our identities. We deal with broken dreams, broken spirits, and even broken hearts. As broken women, when our lives have been shattered into many pieces, we assess our lives according to what we think they look like and not what they still contain and have the potential to produce. In our assessment, we decrease the value of every piece and count it as a loss. When this happens, we lose ourselves, we fail to see the beauty in every piece, and we lose our identities. Although broken, every piece of us still has value.
A woman’s heart is fragile; she gives freely and sometimes too freely. As women, we will freely give what we have. Most of the time, it is freely given to those who are not even deserving of it. We
