The Woman in the Mirror: A Journey into the Authentic Self
By Evelyn Mejil

About this ebook
Before devoting her life to helping global victims of violent crimes and social injustice, author Evelyn Mejil was a survivor. Despite the challenges, she didn't allow her past to hold her back. Instead, she let it fuel her to push through and make a difference. In The Woman in the Mirror, she provides a vivid portrait of her courageous mind meeting her painful memories, her valiant heart overcoming her shameful unworthiness, and her bold spirit overpowering her relentless fear.
In this account, Mejil shares an uncensored description of how she overcomes her past when she discovers an inconspicuous truth while traveling the world in search for answers to silence her nightmares and heal her pain. Hidden in the eyes of the woman reflected in the mirror, she sees the answers stood where she buried her painful past, and to find them there is only one journey left to take, a journey within.
The Woman in the Mirror tells how once she goes beyond the memories and faces her demons, she finally discovers her true being and vividly recounts how her false self, the identity birthed in the lies of her past, collapses. Shattering the iron grip of her past, she heals and brings forth a new story. Mejil presents the unadulterated expression of her most powerful self, the authentic self.

About the Author
You can run from the burning passion
ignited in your heart because of fear:
fear of what people will say;
fear of the way in which people will judge you;
fear of the way in which people will criticize you;
fear of those who will try to stop you;
fear of those who will try to quench your fire;
fear of those who will leave you;
fear of those you will leave;
fear of being misunderstood;
fear of your pain;
fear of your past;
fear of wanting more;
fear of your dreams;
fear of your potential;
fear of fear.
Or you can become that which you fear the most:
that which burns in you like fire;
that which your heart desires;
that which is truth;
that which is power;
that which is you,
the authentic self.
To my brother Danny.
You will always have life
in my heart.
I love you, always and forever.
Acknowledgments
It is my great privilege to honor those who have honored me by loving me unconditionally and seeing what I couldn’t see in me, until I did.
First, to my mother, thank you for choosing to give me life and being the instrument to bring forth my essence into this world. My greatest lesson in love is you. I will honor you with my life, and I will love you through all my existence. To my dad, you chose to fill someone else’s shoes, but to me, they have always and will always belong to you. I love you deeply. To my brothers: Jose and Carlos. Jose, thank you for being a role model of strength, integrity, and faith. I love you for everything that you are and for everything you inspire me to be. My baby brother, Carlos, you had to be the last, because everything that is good in all of us was perfected in you. Thank you for being my compass and always guiding me to the heart of me without judgment and with unconditional love. I love you beyond words and beyond this lifetime. To my nieces and nephew, Kryzzia, Kiara, Keishla, Amber, Yamilex, and Ashley, the queens of my heart, and Justin, my sweet prince, you are my greatest love of all. To my great grandmother and grandmother, our matriarchs— thank you for being the strength, the wisdom, and the force of life that still lives in me, for me and through me. I honor you. Thank you for filling my spirit.
To my two greatest inspirations—my mentors and my angels—Liz Hevia and Donald Bey. You nursed my heart and healed my soul. You gave me the gift of life, I hope to forever honor you with my life. Thank you for being my beacon of light, hope and strength. Because of you, I am. To my spiritual parents and guide, Dr. Iko Ibanga, Esther Ibanga, Michael Howell and the legendary Gloria Gaynor, thank you for lighting up my path and nurturing my soul with your wisdom and love.
I want to make a special mention and thank those special people in my heart and at the heart of bringing this book to life. Every phase of this book had each of you as its guardian angel. You have been my light in navigating the darkest corners of my past, the balm for my pain, and you held on to me, so I could finally let go. You were my support and the faith that kept me going. You gave me a new dream and a new hope when you took this journey with me. I don’t have the words to thank you for nurturing my spirit and loving me unconditionally. The core of my being and my anchors, Ruthy, Damaris, Nydia, Donald, and Orlando, I love you to infinity and beyond. Thank you.
To my women tribe in Malaysia and Thailand. Madeleine, thank you for allowing yourself to be the conduit of the most powerful journey of all, facing my pain and being with my pain. You helped me to stop running and fearing my pain. You held a space for me, and I was finally able to be in my truth. Mariza, thank you for showing me the power of love and being love when I needed it the most. Natasya, thank you for teaching me about self-worth and the strength in knowing my value. Masuri, thank you for being all that is grace; your essence is forever so powerfully present. Farah, thank you for being my mirror and not allowing me to run from myself. Shaney, thank you; you were the instrument that brought it all to life for me. Thank you for believing with me and for me. To you, my sweet friend, I say our end was only the beginning, and, Pam, thank you for being my rock and being my home until I finally found my home in the heart of me. I love you all dearly.
Lastly, my band of sisters, my beautiful tribe of women, and my heroines, you are part of my life’s journey. Each of you entered my life as family or during life-defining
