About this ebook

The Voice of Spirit: A Mediums Story introduces a clinical nurse specialist whose vocation to become a medium led her to devote her full attention to the messages that spirits desire to share with the people they have left behind in this world. Judy OBrien, whose work has given rise to her business, Angels Amongst Us, speaks with a conversational and honest voice in the pages of this book that blends the genres and intentions of a memoir, a spiritual reflection, and a guide.

As the author tells her lifes story, she notes, I can communicate with loved ones who have crossed over. I have been aware of this abilityor giftsince I was five, but it wasnt until many years later, that I wanted to learn more about spirituality and understand the messages I was receiving because I had always thought they were just my intuition. Readers following her on the journey narrated in The Voice of Spirit will traverse the same path of deepening insight and recognize the blessings that come from listening to the messages that arise and contemplating their sources and meanings.

In The Voice of Spirit: A Mediums Story, Judy OBrien desires to validate the existence of spirits for all whom those same spirits have left behind. As you read her story, you can find hope and peace and appreciate the love that transcends the boundaries of the physical world and that beckons you toward the spiritual world in which eternal love never dies.

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to all of those whom I love and who have walked with me on my life’s journey, in the past and the present. To my angels, I have always known of your beautiful presence, your comforting words and your magnificent protection. You have guided me through the darkness and led me on a path of self-discovery, helping me to find my life’s purpose.

To my spirit guides Seth, Celeste, Etheniel and Arimas, thank you for your spiritual guidance, healing energy and sight. Your teaching, love and protection are always welcome. To my master guide Seth, we have walked this Earth many times before. May we always be connected. Thank you for your guidance even though I may not have always listened.

To my spirit guide who helped me write my story, thank you, Timothy, for showing me there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that perseverance pays off.

To the spiritual beings I have been introduced to, and those I’m yet to meet, I look forward to working with you and connecting with your energy in the future.

To Jesus (my constant rock), Mother Mary and all the spiritual beings I ask for every day, thank you for showing me the way and helping me to do God’s Work.

To God, I thank you for this beautiful gift you have bestowed on me. May your light and love shine through me always. May I be worthy of this gift and always use it to bring comfort and peace to everyone I meet. May your light shine through them, brighter than ever before, to touch everyone and everything. Thank you also for teaching me to respect your time and all the many lessons I had to work through in order to finish this book.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Throughout this book, I refer to the angels as my angels, but I certainly claim no ownership over them. They are God’s angels and spiritual messengers, and they are available to anyone who calls upon or communicates with them. During those times in my life when I have called on them for comfort, guidance and unconditional love and support, they have never failed me and for that I am truly grateful. So please excuse my reference to my angels. I say it out of endearment and love, not a form of possession.

May the angels guide and support you throughout your life, and let Heaven hear your prayers. Judy x

I speak of God frequently throughout this book because I believe my gift comes from God. Everyone has their own journey to fulfil and their beliefs are theirs alone, and will no doubt differ from mine. I believe it doesn’t matter who you pray to or have faith in as long as we respect each other’s point of view or belief system without prejudice or judgement.

I love this part of the book because I get to express my sincerest appreciation to the people and spiritual beings who have had unwavering faith in my ability, to acknowledge the impact they have had on my life and thank them for their encouragement to keep moving forward, even when things seemed overwhelming.

To Darrin… my twin flame. Without your tenacity and enthusiasm for life, I would not be the person I am today. You believed in me when I didn’t. Thank you for encouraging me to never give up even though I sometimes felt lost. You made it happen! xx

To my children, Cameron, Elyse and Brooklyn, God smiled on me when you came into my life. Thank you for your unconditional love and support. I am proud to be your mother. It is a privilege to support you in your lives and witness your spiritual growth and accomplishments.

To my mum and dad, thank you for allowing me to become the person I was meant to be and for giving me the strength and courage to stand on my own two feet.

To Rose, thank you for teaching me to fly. XX

To Alice, my Earth angel, thank you for connecting me with my grandfather…I love you Archangel Michael….

To my amazing healer, Julie, the work you do is greatly needed. Thank you for the wonderful gifts.

To my family, here and in Heaven, thank you for believing in me and allowing me to share my gift.

To the two people who actually keep me grounded, Lawrence and Ronnie. Thank you for your patience and for showing me balance.

To my editor Gia, thank you for bringing my book to life.x

To Emma, Daryl, Craig, Rodney and Teneal … you are the ones who have believed in me and helped me have faith in myself on a daily basis. You kept me focused.

Lastly, thank you to the beautiful people and their spiritual families who have blessed my life by allowing me to share in their precious stories. One of the best parts of my gift is that it has enabled me to meet such incredible people who have opened up their lives to me and allowed spirit to share their stories with their loved ones.

And finally, to you, the reader, Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I hope that it will give you some insight into the life of a medium…welcome to my world. I hope the stories in these pages will give you peace and comfort, knowing that there is life after death and that, without them, my story would not be told. These stories may resonate with you or with someone you know. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I have enjoyed writing them down.

I’m nothing special. I just hear them.

I wrote this book in collaboration with my main spirit guide, Seth, my friend and mentor, Rose, additional spiritual beings, loved ones who have crossed over and the angels who are amongst us. It reflects my own experiences and beliefs. I have written it in good faith, to express my love for the spirit world and the gratification and fulfilment my work gives me every day. You will undoubtedly draw your own conclusions as everyone sees things in their own individual way. I only ask that you keep an open mind. Please take what you want from it and use it as a guide to help improve your own spiritual development or to gain an understanding of God’s work. My aim is to acknowledge the spiritual beings and loved ones who have blessed my life and the synchronistic events that have changed it for the better. I am not trying to change anyone’s opinions or their beliefs about life after death or spiritualism, only to share my personal story.

    PREFACE: THIS IS MY LIFE….

Before I embarked on writing down my story, I read the autobiography of renowned Australian medium Margaret Dent entitled, Love Never Dies. I remember looking at the title and thinking to myself, How true! Love does not die with the body, but continues to live with the spirit. I have never doubted this and have often confided this truth to my clients, reassuring them at the end of my readings that the love that exists between spirit and the people left behind would never die or be forgotten. It is like a cord, connecting us forever, never to be broken. Even when we stumble or fall, our loved ones in the spirit world are there to catch us.

In her book, Dent wrote, I have never had what is called a ‘normal’ life. I have been aware of them all my life. I completely identified with her statement as my life, too, has been far from normal. But….what IS a normal life? For me, it is our own perceptions or attitudes towards our lives that help us gauge what is normal and what is not, what is good and what is bad. For example, if you wake up thinking it is going to be a dreadful day, it probably will be. If you believe your life won’t get any better because of past experiences, it probably won’t. When we project negative thoughts out to the universe, the universe delivers in kind. As the saying goes, "Life is what you make it."

Let me give you an example from my own life: I had many reservations about writing this book because I didn’t consider myself to be a particularly interesting or unique person, and I certainly didn’t want readers to assume that this was just another book about spirituality. Don’t misunderstand me. There are plenty of wonderful books on the subject, and I have read them. They are insightful, knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I just didn’t think that anyone would be interested in my story. For years, readers, teachers and friends insisted that I write down my story and experiences as a medium. A few years ago, I did finally begin writing under the guidance of my friend, Michelle, a healer and teacher. But it wasn’t until I conducted a reading for my mentor and friend, Rose, that I started to write my story in earnest. Out of the blue Rose had said to me, when I had finished a reading for her, that I would write a book. I laughed and said, I know. I’ve heard that before.

I know, but you’ve already started to work on it, so why don’t you just finish it? she asked me.

I was stunned. I had just started to get back into my writing but no one knew. That was the day that my story began. It has been a long road, but I know things happen in God’s time, not according to MY schedule. I have learned many important things along the way which have helped me to create this book. Sometimes we just need to take a leap of faith and see what happens…

    CHAPTER 1

I HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN SPIRIT WAS THERE!

I am a wife, a mother, a sister and a daughter who has a gift: I can communicate with loved ones who have crossed over. I have been aware of this ability - or gift - since I was five, but it wasn’t until many years later, that I wanted to learn more about spirituality and understand the messages I was receiving because I had always thought they were just my intuition.

I decided to attend an Angel Intuitive course conducted by Doreen Virtue. It was there that I discovered it wasn’t my intuition talking to me at all but actually the voices of people’s loved ones who had crossed over to the spirit world. That was the point at which I recognised that I was actually a medium and had the ability to speak – hear and see – to people who had passed. I consider this ability to be a gift from God which must not be abused, but neither does it make my life easy to live.

Growing up in Greystanes, a suburb in Western Sydney, I was often labelled a freak or called stupid by my peers and relatives because I preferred to play with my imaginary friends instead of with other kids, and, of course, I would say things that startled people. I later realised that, contrary to their hurtful labels, I was not stupid in the academic sense. As I developed my spiritual awareness, though, I also came to understand that it was my family and friends’ uncertainty or ignorance about the spirit world that made them unable to appreciate the beauty and wonder of it all.

My father used to say to family and friends, There goes Judy….she’s off in Judy Land, because I often didn’t respond to people who were trying to talk to me. He said it so often that it became a running joke in my family. A blank look would descend on my face, eyes glazed staring off into space. That was when I would go to my happy place to escape my surroundings. I noticed that I was the only one in my family with this unusual ability, something which came in handy, especially during fights with my sisters or when I wanted to avoid doing my math homework with my father.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been able to travel out of my body at will. I take a deep breath, exhale quickly and off I go. I now know that this astral travel which would take me to those places where I felt safe meant my body would stay put while my spirit roamed to places the human eye cannot see. From the age of five, or maybe earlier, I could see spirit and have been acutely aware of their presence. The images always presented themselves as black shadows and I heard voices and, of course, I thought this was all perfectly normal. It has always been as normal and instinctive for me as breathing. By talking to like-minded people, I discovered that it was normal to see black shadows and hear voices. Once I started my spiritual development and the fine-tuning of my third eye, the images became more fully defined and the voices became clearer, which meant my senses were heightened.

As I developed my skills and finally worked up the courage, at the age of 22, to tell my parents that I could see spirit, I discovered to my great surprise that my mother and I, in fact, shared this trait as she is a medium, too. It is quite common for a person to inherit an intuitive ability be it from a mother, father, grandmother etc. My spiritual gift is much more developed than my mother’s, and not just because of the work I do – which of course helps to amplify it – but that isn’t the main reason. I believe that with each generation, our gifts are amplified and finetuned as we become more aware of them. It is as if the collective knowledge and wisdom of the previous generations are instilled in each new one. Haven’t you noticed that children today are more alert and know more than we did as children? Of course when my mum was younger, mediumship was not as understood or recognised as it is today. This is the evolution of spiritual beings, with every generation going forth armed with the knowledge accumulated by their predecessors. I am more aware of spirituality than my mother was and my children will be even more aware than me. My daughters, in particular.

It took me a very long time to get up the courage
