About this ebook
Natasha Alcantar
The extraordinary women that’s on the front cover, is my lovely sister. Like I said before on my other book Hairology. I’m from a family of eight, I’m the last. Coming up in a big family is a lot of fun guaranteed. My family has helped me out a lot. Me just a lost soul on the street, trying to get directed in the right direction. I pray every time I can remember, Just the thought of God is a celebration within itself. Boy I tell you life is a wonderful joy. It’s about time we start giving back to the one’s who loves us the most. I’m 31 and married with four children, and one on the way. The pain is server, but the end result is life, what a joy!

Natasha V. Alcantar Life in the hair industry
poetica.tifCosmetology is an industry that’s open to the public. Who ever has the driven ability to do this type of work it’s here. First and foremost I want to start out by saying I have been in the industry for four years and I have so much to learn. The hair industry can take you in so many different directions. You have to be physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually ready for this. When I first graduated from cosmetology school, I was excited so ready to take the board test. I did and I passed, than I was ready to go to work in the salon. Their was so many mistakes that I made. When I first started, I went in and arranged my equipment. I waited their for hours, clients was coming in and out for styles. I realized that I was not ready. In order to make in the salon business, you have to have a sense of humor. You have to have common sense, a nice personality, and you have to be disciplined. You have to remain professional at all times. Example, when a client comes in you want to be seated at the front. You want to be close to the door, if you are not with a client. So that you can greet the client. You have to remember that you have competition. Their are other stylist that is waiting on the same thing you are waiting for, and that’s a client. There are so many different types of salons out their. You have to do your job and find out which one is best for you. Atmosphere is a very important subject you want to address. If it’s not comfortable for you, you should know from school, or by the time you graduate, the first most important thing to do is go to different salons and get a feel for what you are looking for. Weigh your options! Location is what’s important. Their needs to be a proper parking place, food courts, close to a bus line, etc. Go in and meet the staff, find out what type of work they do, and what type of people they are. First impressions are everything. For the past four years, it has been ruff. I have experienced quite a bit, I have had the opportunity to give a class, and also work on a platform for exposure. I’m the type of person, I like to create different things, my style is complex. When I look at art, I like abstract art, something that’s different. I like something that you wouldn’t see everyday. What I learnt in this business, is never be afraid to ask question. Don’t be afraid of rejection, because you will encounter that. Professionals will not tell you anything about the business after you get out of school. And they will be very rude about the situation sometime. In life, you have your up’s and downs, but you need to try to remain sane. I am one that cannot deal with the pressure. I think I went temporality insane for about a month or two. I had to seek professional help. I talked to a phys doctor, to try to get back to where I was before. Trying to keep up with family, juggle a personal life, and trying to build a career, can take you to a point of no return. So stay focus on what you are doing.
Salon Business
The salon business is very interesting. When you look at a salon, read the name behind the name, there is a story that goes with it. So when you go to apply within, ask question that you would like to have answered. This is so you know whether or not you want to be a part of that. You do not want to be miss represented in no way. The one thing that you need to know about these salons, (some) are theft. You will have a theft problem going to some salons. I pray that you have to never experience it like I had to experience it firsthand. They will steal curling irons, shears, product, etc. I don’t know who was taking it, if it was staff, customers, people just coming in off the street to sit around, who ever. All I’m saying is beware! Try to take to the salon as less as possible, if you have a shampoo person, train them properly because you don’t want to be misrepresented in no way. I constantly repeat that, because once you lose a client it’s hard to get them back. You want to love what you are doing. I love my job, customer service is everything. What I noticed about the salon is, clients love a clean sanitized space, this creates a relaxed mood. Most clients are just getting off work, so they need that comfort ability. This is part of the service, not just the hair style. Remember to be very aggressive about sanitizing your combs, brushes, etc. You never know who is watching you. The state can be their and you would never know. The salons, they have upscale salons which requires more money for booth rent. Now I don’t want to discourage you from wanting to be apart of those salons. But your clients must be on high demand, in order to maintain a chair. You want to shop smart, not hard. Go to the salon that best fits your budget.
