    I come from a brainy family. My parents met at Oxford and both have PhDs, and my brother David just started the third year of his medical studies there. I started University College London yesterday. It’s a decent university but doesn’t rank with Oxford and Cambridge for prestige. I know you’re thinking, poor girl, the brother got all the brains. Absolutely not true! I could have gone to Oxford just on connections if I wasn’t brainy too, but I swear to you, UCL was my first choice. Up until three years ago I had been looking forward to going to Oxford and having fun—fucking around and studying as little as possible. Then Simon, my brother’s best friend, didn’t get the grades he needed to get into Oxford and had to go to UCL instead because his father isn’t as well connected as mine. So I hadn’t even applied to Oxford since I didn’t want to be anywhere Simon wasn’t. My mother had been furious, but I shed a few crocodile tears and said that I didn’t want to be so far away from home, that I would miss my daddy. I didn’t say that I would miss her too—just to be spiteful. My daddy comforted me and said I could go wherever I wanted to. He’s a pushover and still thinks I’m about four years old. And anything his little darling wants, his little darling gets.
