It was the summer vacation, and, gosh, I was bored. All my school friends were away at the seaside surfing or away in the mountains white water rafting, Mum was visiting her sister, and I was stuck at home with Dad.

My Dad’s cool. I think he cares about me more than my Mum does. He’d taken a fortnight off work because he didn’t like the idea of me being alone in the house all day. There are some dodgy people hanging around our neighborhood.

I’m eighteen, I’m perfectly old enough to look after myself, but it was nice of Dad to be so worried about me, especially as he’s a fireman and it was a boiling hot summer. There were loads of fires everywhere and Dad’s boss, Geoff, was upset with him for taking the time off. Actually, he’s my step-Dad, but he married my Mum so long ago he feels more like a real father.
