    PROLOGUE

    There was something behind me. Or, was it in front of me? All around me? The smell of the rain is filling up my nose. But, I run through the mud, chasing the shadow ahead of me. It’s going faster. I’m afraid. But, I don’t know why. My heart is beating in my head, and my nerves scream to keep running. To go faster. I must reach it. I must catch up. I look behind me. But, I don’t see anything. But, there’s someone laughing nearby—I can hear it as clear as day. Her laughter is strangely light, and happy. She is so happy right now.

    She’s happy because we’re scared.

    CHAPTER 1

    I la!

    I wake with a start, jumping off the bench. Holy shoot. My body screams in pain, I’m sore all over. The morning sun is filtering through the trees. I’d slept all night sitting on my window bench.

    Oh crap, I try to move my limbs around. Every inch of me is tight and can barely move. My fingers were curled into the blanket and now they ache. My back can barely flex. My neck is pinching in pain.

    Ila! Are you awake? my dad yells from downstairs. The sound of his voice grates against my ears. I feel that familiar irritation rise in me.

    "Yes! I’m up!" my voice sounds like I’m on the brink already. I can’t help it. He always woke me up this way. It’s so annoying. Doesn’t he ever listen to me? He yells from downstairs that it was time to go to school.

    I growl. I guess not.
