    HER NAUGHTY TEDDY BARE

    She needs to be loved.

With her thick body, thicker glasses and high IQ, eighteen-year-old Scarlett Bloom has never fit in with the glamorous girls at her secondary school. She would have no friends if not for Annika Ivanov, the girl equally despised by their classmates and voted ‘the girl most likely to sleep with your boyfriend’.

He’s more than happy to oblige!

James Cameron had once had his heart broken by Scarlett’s mother, Elizabeth. When she leaves Scarlett in his care, it’s as if life has given him a second chance. If only he could be sure that Scarlett would welcome his advances.

When her friend Annika buys Scarlett a large teddy bear, James seizes the opportunity to get to know her better and find out exactly how she feels about him.

    Chapter One

James Cameron smiled at Lucy Chen, his Optical Assistant, as she entered his consulting room and informed him, Mrs Khan and her daughter Scarlett are here.

    Send them in, please.

He automatically straightened his shoulders and donned his most professional demeanour.

The woman was new to is practice; it was always good to make a great first impression.

An exciting but slightly overpowering perfume hit his nostrils before they were ushered in.

He had to school his features at the sight of them.

Expecting to see a protective Asian mother and her juvenile child, he was startled at the sight of a buxom English blonde and the frumpy-looking, plump redhead who followed timidly behind her.

And though they couldn’t be dressed more differently, it was clear from their resemblance that they were closely related.

Perhaps the young woman has a disability, he thought.

It would explain why her mother would feel the need to accompany her when she was clearly an adult.

It would also explain why the young woman would wear such thick lenses in her glasses. No matter how strong the prescription, there was no need for glasses to look so unflattering on anyone in this modern age.

Something about the younger woman stirred something inside him and he inhaled sharply just as he heard the blonde purr, James!

He was startled as she came around the desk and bent to hug him, enveloping him in her soft arms and that ultra feminine perfume.

He would know that voice in his sleep.

It evoked memories of the past.

    Painful memories.

Memories of his first and only heartbreak.

    Elizabeth? he questioned.

Of course, it’s me, silly. She stepped back and smiled down at him. I can’t believe you didn’t recognize me!

The name threw me, he admitted.

And he’d been more focussed on her daughter from the moment the women had entered the room.

I was married for a couple of months four years ago, she explained. It didn’t work out but I kept the name.

    You look wonderful, he complimented.

So, do you, she responded with a teasing wink. You cleaned up surprisingly well.

He could have reminded her that she hadn’t always been the bombshell she was today, but it wouldn’t have been polite.

This is your daughter Scarlett? he asked. She appeared to have forgotten the young woman’s existence.

Yes. She went back around the desk, took hold of her daughter’s hand and urged her forward. She needs a new pair of glasses.

Have you considered contact lens or laser surgery for her? he asked.

Glasses are just fine, Elizabeth replied with a little snap in her tone.

Belatedly he remembered what had happened when she’d ditched her glasses for contact lenses at the age of sixteen.

    As you wish, he conceded.

As it is, she’s costing me a bundle, Elizabeth complained. These glasses aren’t even quite six months old and she says that they hurt her eyes. I keep telling her that she reads too much, but I can’t get her to stop.

Reading shouldn’t cause damage to your eyesight, unless you’re wearing the wrong prescription or using an improper light source. James addressed the young woman directly, although her mother seemed determined to be her spokesperson. Take a seat over there, he got up and indicated the patient’s chair where his phoropter was set up, I will re-test your eyesight and adjust your prescription, if needs be.

I hope you’ll be able to reuse the frames, Elizabeth quickly interjected.

James couldn’t believe that his former classmate actually had the gall to utter the words. It looked as though the frames had already been re-used and hadn’t been fashionable for several years.

Don’t worry about the cost, he assured her. If they can’t be reused, I will be able to offer you a new pair at a substantial discount.

That’s great! There was a rustle of paper as Elizabeth delved into her large, expensive-looking handbag, pulled out a piece of paper triumphantly and said, Here’s her old prescription.

He took the piece of paper absentmindedly as he rose and moved closer to her daughter.

He almost pinched himself to make sure that he hadn’t entered some kind of alternate universe.

Without her glasses, Scarlett’s face was completely transformed.

Nineteen years ago, just before her sixteenth birthday, Elizabeth had removed her glasses to clean them while they had been studying for an exam and James had been startled by her beauty then just as he was now by her daughter’s.

Up until that point he had been more drawn to Elizabeth’s brains than her looks. Seeing her for the first time without glasses had both surprised and terrified him. He’d known then that he would lose her, if some more popular boy saw her without them and made a move on her.

It was the clichéd plot of many teen movies—nerdy girl takes off glasses and is instantly transformed into a goddess—but just as the simple act had revealed her mother’s good looks almost nineteen years ago, it did the same for Scarlett.

Heart beating faster, he took a seat in front of her and started to adjust the phoropter.

Her scent was sweet and subtle, and it did more to him than her mother’s punch-out-your-lights perfume.

The prescription for her lens was too strong he soon confirmed, but not by much.

Next he moved her over to the slit-lamp so that he could analyse the anterior and posterior segments of her eyes. It wasn’t absolutely necessary since she’d had a recent eye examination, but it gave him the chance to get closer to her.

He touched her shoulder and was jolted by its softness even through her t-shirt as he positioned her head and asked if the chin rest was comfortable.

She nodded and as he took a seat opposite and used bright light and a microscope to study her emerald green irises, James felt a stirring in his trousers.

He felt fifteen again, staring into the eyes of the girl he loved.

    Damn!

If Elizabeth wasn’t in the room, he would have done more tests—all unnecessary—just as an excuse to stay close to her daughter.

For a moment, he contemplated giving Scarlett new frames, even though the sturdy pair she had would last another twenty years unless someone deliberately stomped on them.

No! I don’t want other men looking at her!

He almost looked around to see where the voice had come from.

Do you have a spare pair? he asked Scarlett instead.

Yes, she replied. She unzipped her backpack, pulled out an eyeglasses case and opened it to reveal another pair. I can use these until you change the lenses in the other ones.

They were uglier than the pair she’d been wearing, if that was possible.

Once again he debated briefly—mere moments really—on whether or not to change the frames.

But once again the idea that other men would lust after her made his blood boil.

As a compromise he would fit them with the thinnest, lightest lenses that were currently available. He didn’t want anyone calling her ‘Bat Girl’ as they had done Elizabeth after one of their classmates had teased that she looked as blind as the creature.

You’ve done pretty well for yourself. Elizabeth’s voice brought him back to the present. I suppose you no longer live in your parents’ annex?

They moved to Florida when my father retired. I live in the main house now. A cousin lived in the annex up until last Christmas, but he and his girlfriend have their own place now.

So it’s empty? Before he could respond, she continued, Are you looking to rent it?

    "It’s never been occupied by
