    *****

When this story took place, I had been working with Walton Johnson for six months. He was Stock Manager at World of Pets, the local pet food store, and I was the Captain in the Aquatics deaprtment. Technically, he was my boss, though I didn't work directly under him. That's how the hierarchy worked in places like that: Store Director; Procedures, Stock, Aquatics, then Front End Managers; Captains; and then all other employees.

Walt was older than me, nearly twice my age, which put him into his mid-fifties. He had silver hair mixed evenly with grey, kind green eyes in a classicly handsome face, a gentle smile, and an easy laugh. That description probably makes him seem old and sexless. That was not the case.

As Stock Manager, Walt not only made sure the store was stocked and the orders came in when they were supposed to. He stocked the shelves right along with the rest of his team, often taking dog food because it was where he'd started out and was the most comfortable.

In case you don't know much about stocking dog food, the bags weigh up to fifty pounds apiece. While this is a lot, its not out of the realm of possibility that most people can lift it once, to get it into their carts. However, when you're throwing- a term we use for stocking- up to, say, fifty bags a day, the repetitive motion can wear you out quickly. I know because I've done it; I started out as a stocker.

But I've seen Walt do this for entire shifts, several days in a row, without taking a break or even slowing down. But then, he'd been doing so for nearly two decades, so...

Despite his age, Walt was, well, ripped. He was a man a woman would look twice at, possibly even three or four times. I certainly had.

But it wasn't just his good looks or his rockin' body that made me like him, and want him. He was a genuinely good person. You mattered when you talked to Walt. He never talked down to you, even when he was being a manager and coaching you on something.

When I first started working with him, I was getting up at 3:30 a.m. to be there at 4:30. The stock team was the first to arrive, so they could have everything put away and the pallets off the floor before we opened at nine. It was quite a switch from sleeping all morning, getting up to write or work on my online store all day, eating when I felt like it. But I'd needed structure in my life, and this job gave it to me.

My first day, Walt was there. He let me in ten minutes early, helped me get punched in for my shift, then showed me how to work cat cans and bags, and left me to it.

If I made a mistake, he was always understanding, and rather than getting
