No, I can’t go out tonight, Lauren said into the phone. She lay back on her couch and stared up at the ceiling.

Come on, please! begged her friend, Sarah. I just want to go out dancing for a little, but nobody else can.

That’s because it’s a weeknight. Nobody wants to go out drinking when they have work the next day.

Yeah, but you don’t. That’s my point! Lauren frowned. She had gotten laid off from her job two weeks ago. You need to get out of your funk, continued Sarah. Come out with me and have some fun!"

I’m too old for this, Lauren said. I haven’t been out dancing in years.

    You’re only thirty! replied Sarah.

    I’m thirty-four, said Lauren dryly.

    Right, close enough.

Not even close! Also, now that I don’t have a job I can’t even afford to go out.

I’ll pay for you! said Sarah. Or with a little luck we’ll get some cute guy to buy drinks for you, she said playfully.

No, I hate that. You know I don’t do one-night stands and I’m not interested in leading anyone on, Lauren said.

Come on, how long has it been since you broke up with Scott? Lauren scowled. It had been a year ago. She had devoted herself to her work since then, but in the two weeks since she had been laid off she had become painfully aware of how lonely she was.

It’s not important, Lauren said, because you’re paying for me. It will be your punishment for forcing me to go to a club with you.

    So you’re coming?!

Well… Lauren struggled to come up with another excuse, but failed. Fine. Where are we going?

Yes! We’re going to a new place that opened just down the street from me. Just come over and meet me at my apartment.

One hour later, Lauren stood in front of the club with Sarah. She immediately didn’t like the look of the place. The sign above the door was bright orange and had a tipping martini glass on it. There was a line starting at the front door that led halfway down the block. But just dressing up and going out made Lauren feel better about her current situation. She was wearing a tight black dress that barely contained her C cup tits. She kept herself in decently good shape and she knew that she looked good. The hungry looks that she got from the men in line made her forget for a moment that she didn’t even want to be here.

When they got finally got through the line and walked inside Lauren was overwhelmed by the heat and noise of the club. Sarah grabbed her hand and pulled her forward into the crowd. They did their best to move through the crowd without bumping into anyone. Lauren slid herself between the bodies of people who were standing with drinks in their hands. As they moved through the crowd it changed from immobile masses to a writhing throng. Sarah was pulling her right through the middle of the dance floor. Sarah let go of Lauren’s hand, lifted her arms above her head and started dancing while still sliding through the crowd. She turned her head back to look at Lauren. Come on! she yelled. Lauren saw that they were heading towards the bar and began to move more quickly. She looked forward to sucking down a drink before she thought up an excuse to leave.

After a lot of shoving they were able to make their way through the crowd to the bar. Sarah had inserted herself between two people seated on stools and she was talking to the bartender with two fingers raised towards him. Lauren put her hand on Sarah’s shoulder.

This bar is full of children! Lauren yelled over the music. Nobody in the bar was older than 25, and Lauren felt out of place.

I’m getting you a drink, Sarah shouted back

    I want to leave.

Sarah pointed to her ear and yelled, I can’t hear you!

I know you’re lying because I can hear you perfectly! Lauren yelled back. Sarah pointed to her ear again and shrugged, then grinned and turned back to the bartender.

Sarah took the drinks from the bartender and handed Lauren a glass that was full of something clear and carbonated. Lauren took a sip through the tiny straw, then pushed the straw off to the side and drank straight from the glass. She tilted her head back and finished the drink off at once, then reached past Sarah and put it on the bar.

That’s the spirit! yelled Sarah. Lauren rolled her eyes.

Lauren set her glass down on the bar and Sarah immediately dragged her onto the dance floor. At first she shifted slowly to the music. She wasn’t interested in dancing. But after fifteen minutes she was surprised to find that she was actually having a good time. Sarah kept feeding her drinks and she began to really enjoy herself. After half an hour he had given herself up completely to dancing and stopped caring about whether she looked stupid or not. She even began to enjoy the feeling of unknown men pressing up against her, putting their hands on her and sometimes even copping a feel. All of the tension of the past few weeks melted away, and she chose to let herself stop worrying, if just for these few hours. She was sweating and felt as though she had a fever, but it was a good feeling.
