SURVEYING THE LAND
We grew up in the Midwest (Chris in Illinois and Benj in Ohio) in and around typical farming communities—known for fertile land, cattle, and corn for miles. Neither of us stayed in those places. Benj moved to Atlanta to start his businesses amid asphalt, traffic-stacked streets, the arts, culture, and creative energy. Chris moved to Orlando, Florida, with its white beaches, wide-spanning communities, and booming business opportunities.
Occasionally, we talk about what it was like many years ago in our small towns. We both loved growing up there. For places that were—to the naked eye—fairly standard, it was special to both of us in the way it shaped our thinking and how we run our businesses today. Strangely enough, maybe one of the most profound, proud symbols we carry with us from our lives in the Midwest is the farmer’s mentality. Seriously. But we’re talking about more than denim overalls, mud-caked work boots, tattered ball caps, weathered hands, a permanent tan line on the back of the neck, and gritty nails.
