    INTRODUCTION

Happiness lies deep inside us, in the very core of our being. Happiness doesn’t exist in any external object, but only in us. Our consciousness experiences happiness. Although we seem to get happiness from external objects or experiences, the joy that we feel comes from within us.

Happiness is a state of being; it is a state in which our mind's habitual agitation is calmed. When our mind is disturbed, we lose own innermost happiness. To enjoy happiness, our whole mind needs to be done with all its activities, returning calmly to its natural state of inactive, as it does daily in deep sleep.

In this state of just being one with ourselves, our mind does not rise to think or seek to know anything, yet it is in a state of full consciousness. The skill that is learned in this art is not just skill. No special skill or effort needs to be done - nor is it merely skill without doing or thinking anything. We can be happy every day in deep dreamless sleep. The skill to be cultivated is the skill to be calm and peaceful without doing or thinking anything, but still maintaining a completely clear consciousness - that is, consciousness of our own being or essential am-ness. Only in this pristine state of clear non-dual self-conscious being, unclouded by the distracting agitation of thought and action, is the true nature of being true: clear, self-evident and free from even the least bit of doubt or confusion.

In this book, therefore, I will try to explain both the theory and the practice of the art of knowing and being our real self. The theory of this science and the art of self-knowledge is necessary and helpful to us as it enables us to not only understand the fact, but also to practice it so we can achieve such knowledge.

All the unhappiness, discontent and misery we experience in our lives is only our ignorance or confusing knowledge of who or what we really are. So long as we limit our self by identifying our body as I, we would like the desire to think of whatever is necessary for our body to survive, and of whatever will make that body more comfortable and pleasant in our life. Likewise, you will be afraid and dislike whatever seems to threaten the body’s survival, and whatever makes our life less comfortable or pleasant. When we do not get what we want or like, and when we do not fear whatever we fear or dislike, we are unhappy, discontented or miserable.

Thus, unhappiness or suffering is the inevitable result of desire and fear, or of likes and dislikes. Desire and fear, and likes and dislikes, are inevitable results of a body identification such as I. I results from our lack of clear knowledge of our real nature - our essential self-conscious being. So, if we want to be free from all forms of misery and unhappiness, we must be free from our own ignorance or confused knowledge of what we really are.

In order to free our self from this confused knowledge, which makes us feel that we are a body, we must get a clear knowledge of our real self. The only means by which we can get such clear self-knowledge can be our attention to our body, our mind and all other things, and focus on our own self-consciousness - our basic consciousness of our being, I am.

Thus, the theory that underlines the science and art of self-knowledge allows us to understand that all we need to do is to perfect happiness to experience real self-knowledge, and the only means to achieve self-knowledge is to practice self-attention with keen scrutiny. Unless we know our self as we really are, we can never experience true and perfect happiness. Until we are inclined to be our essential consciousness - our simple non-dual self-consciousness of I am - we can never know our self as we are really.

The aim of this book, or any subsequent book, is not to persuade anyone to believe anything, but only to prompt all of us who have a truly attentive mind to be critical of our habitual view of our own world and God, and to encourage us to embark upon the journey of self-discovery by investigating our consciousness I am, which is the center and fundamental basis of all our experience and knowledge.

    Chapter 1

    Changes Are Permanent

The fact is, every second of our lives is changing. The change may be positive or negative. Positive changes make us elevate where negative changes throw us down. But the fact is, nothing in life is permanent. I believe the essential goal of your life is to grow. Positive or negative changes are just events. How do you decide the next sequence of events in your life to deal with them? As long as you maintain a persistent growth perspective in your life, there is no point in which the changes you experience will always make you feel that you are growing in life!

If you curse the crossroad of your life or make it worse with negative events or experiences, you need to make sure you are growing up. Of course, life is precious. It's born out of positive and negative experiences. We have to accept the change in life only and get the inner feeling of developmental development.

Change is the only constant thing in this world.

Change in this world is the only permanent thing. Like crops, life and people also change. You get things you like it and then box something out of your choice. You gain friends and lose some. You grow and learn things you never thought you
