A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE KETOGENIC DIET
You might be wondering how something that sounds this good could actually be true. Once you see how it all works, you will be able to see the science behind it.
Your body is programed to burn carbohydrates for energy. This means that your body sends fuel, which is a result of burning carbs, to your vital organs. This fuel enables them to work, as well as give you the power to be able to move and go about your daily business. The keto diet turns off that switch and instead of burning carbs, your body burns fat. This happens by limiting the number of carbs you eat, so that your body then naturally switches to the next sensible source of fuel, which is fat.
Ketosis is the process of switching from burning carbs to burning fat. While ketosis is not dangerous if you follow the diet properly, it does have a brief period of side effects. You will need to learn how to minimize the side effects in order to get to the clear air on the other side. We will talk in more detail about managing side effects later in the book. For now, you simply need to know that on this diet you are very unlikely to be hungry or to have cravings because you are going to be eating more fat, and fatty foods are much more satisfying than low-calorie or low-fat foods.
In a short amount of time you will be burning fat as your primary source of fuel, which means you will be making quick and effective headway into stored fat. These are the parts of your body that are squishy and annoying. Before you know it, you will have that beach body!
How is the Ketogenic Diet Different from Other Low-Calorie Diets?
It’s vitally important to realise that the keto diet is not a quick fix, fad diet. It is actually a lifestyle change that you will want to continue for the rest of your life. The keto diet will teach you how to eat clean
foods—foods that have not been affected by pesticides, antibiotics, or anything artificial. Instead, the emphasis is on natural ingredients and organics. You will have improved health from the start.
The keto diet differs from low-calorie diets because it is sustainable and offers more choices in terms of what you eat. Many low-calorie diets are very restrictive, and if you’ve ever been on one, you have probably had one or two moments where you rebelled completely, and eventually threw in the towel. This is because your body simply cannot handle that amount of restriction over a long period of time.
Low-calorie diets mean you keep calories in your daily food low, but you are still burning carbs. This doesn’t make much headway into stored fat reserves, and any progress is likely to be slow. For this reason, many people fail.
