    To say that hopelessness has thrown a wrench into the works is an understatement. The level of disruption experienced worldwide over the years is of epic proportions. Hope for many has slowly been deprived through different means of challenges we have had to overcome. This makes us all fearful at one point or another. And where there is fear, hope disappears very quickly. Without hope, there is no future.

    Luca, also known as Lazylegz, is a Canadian B-boy dancer. He is also a motivational speaker. He was born with arthrogryposis, a rare muscle disorder that affects the limb by limiting joint mobility.

    Luca has undergone sixteen surgeries on his hips, spine, legs, and shoulders since he was seven months old. But he discovered break dancing at fifteen years old and fell in love with it. Luca formed the ILL-ABILITIES crew, consisting of fellow dancers with various disabilities.

    Luca’s breakdance style focuses on his strong upper body while using his crutches as extensions of his body and moves. He has been dancing for thirteen years now, offering hope to many other people living with disabilities and showing how much they can achieve.

    Chapter One: The Powerful Meaning of Hope and Why it is Important to You

    Hope, said Aristotle, is the dream of a waking man.

    Superficially, hope is considered a wish. But there is more to hope than a mere wish. For some, it is a manifestation of their faith because they interpret it in a spiritual context. In the Bible, hope is the confident expectation you have in God because of his promises to humankind.

    But hope can also exist away from the religious definition. When you cherish a desire with immense anticipation, you are hopeful for its manifestation. That desire drives you to always look on the bright side so that even challenges drive your ambition further.

    Hope is commonly associated with dire situations. But hope should be something that we tap into daily, not periodically in our lives. Envisioning hope is a powerful motivator to do and expect better for yourself. Even though it is ethereal and intangible, it has a strong presence.

    Why is Hope Vital?

    Here are several reasons why hope is essential for you:

    It heals you.

    Difficult times come in being alive, but hope offers expectation and belief. Belief and expectation are the main elements of hope. They release enkephalins and endorphins, which work like morphine to block pain. Endorphins are released as a response to mental stress, and difficult situations can be very stressful. Enkephalins also offer analgesic action in the brain, dulling the pain.

    Jerome Groopman, the author of The Anatomy of Hope, found in his research that belief and expectation impact the nervous system of an ill person. According to Groopman, they set off a chain reaction that makes it more likely to show gradual improvement and even recover. He calls the impact: the placebo effect of hope.

    That is on the physical front. Mentally, hope puts the situation into perspective, reminding you that things will change for the better in the future. This perspective enables you to fight another day.

    It becomes a motivator.

    Hopeful people incorporate positive actions into their life choices. They believe that their actions can influence their goals, resulting in a positive outcome. When you are hopeful, you re-identify and re-evaluate your goals to maintain a clear vision of what is critical. You also reconnect with your core values, motivating you to get up in the morning and strive to prevail.

    It helps combat negative thoughts.

    It is hard for hope and negativity to live in the same space because the former breeds positivity. Hope entertains the light at the end of the tunnel, and that light becomes a beacon of all the great things to come. For example, when an automatic negative thought like, I can’t do this presentation pops into your mind, hope reassures you that you have everything you need to do whatever you put your mind to. Or, if you think divorce has destroyed everything in your life, hope reminds you that you have loved ones who cherish you and you can turn these challenges into opportunities if you approach them from a different angle.

    It helps us seek.

    Hope pushes you to seek inspiration. Research by Daecher Keltner, a psychologist, shows that being inspired or awestruck can offer meaning that motivates you to seek answers. And when you seek answers, you are hopeful of a great outcome. In this way, hope becomes a guiding force in life, leading you to find what you need.

    It inspires self-belief.

    Not only does hope help you believe better things are on the way, but it also boosts your self-belief that you are the person to make these great things happen. In this way, hope builds your self-esteem by helping you believe more in your abilities. A hopeful person will empower themselves to be able to achieve their desires. In the process, you begin to recognize your own power.

    It brings inner peace.

    The belief and expectation that accompany being hopeful alleviate the feeling of despair, resulting in a calmer and more peaceful you. As long as hope remains, even persistent challenges cannot disturb the tranquil landscape inside your mind. It offers an oasis amid a storm.

    What Hope is Not

    Sometimes the glass is not half-empty or half-full. It is just empty, and hope does not try to color it as being halfway there like optimism does. It will let you see the reality of your situation so that if your circumstances are dire, you can pick yourself up from exactly where you are.
