Dedication
To everyone young and old, who’s fought to find peace with what you see in the mirror. It’s time to discover the D.I.V.A. you truly are.
Epigraph
I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.
- Philippians 4:11-13 (The Message)
Foreword
Many of you can probably relate to looking in the mirror and not liking what you see, or wondering how in the world you ate all those chocolate chip cookies. Countless people, myself included, have struggled with weight and how it affects your self-perception and self-acceptance. My very dear friend and mentee, LeeAnn Willis Sims, is no stranger to all of this. Having known her since her childhood, I have witnessed her transformation and growth from a teenager in our church youth group to an extremely polished and accomplished woman. Through the years we have worked together in ministry and in the arts, and she has always been a truly humble, sincere, and hilarious personality, which you will no doubt get a glimpse of as you read through these pages of Weight Loss D.I.V.A.!
Weight Loss D.I.V.A. is a very personable and transparent story of LeeAnn’s struggle with weight loss and self image. She and I have had many conversations over the years regarding this topic, and even though I am as familiar with her battles as she is with mine, I can honestly say that I was not prepared for the tremendous effect that this book would have on my life. Even as I write this, my eyes are swelling up with tears of happiness, tears of gratefulness, and yes, tears of relief. You see, this book will inspire hope for so many people: the teenager tormented in his or her mind because of the number on the scale, or the woman who feels she will only be happy if she reaches a certain size or looks like a celebrity on television. This book is for the one who doesn’t always feel pretty, handsome, or accepted because of weight, which is so many of us!
Finally, I am excited for the mothers and fathers out there who will have a tool that they can share with their teenage sons and daughters to help them navigate through their thoughts and feelings in regards to their own weight and body image. As a mother of two teenage daughters, I regularly tell them how beautiful they are. But I admit that there’s just something good about hearing it from someone who doesn’t have to say these things because they have a vested interest in you. LeeAnn, in a very funny and engaging way, speaks directly to the heart in regards to body image and self-acceptance. I literally laughed out loud several times!
She writes this book as if she’s talking to a really close and trusted friend….the friend that says, Your secret is safe with me
. It’s personal and relatable, and you easily get the sense that this is someone who cares and understands firsthand what you are going through. As I read, I pictured
