PROLOGUE
I wrote this book almost eight years ago now! When I wrote it initially, I had no intention of publishing it. I was merely, putting all-the-things-that-where-bothering-me with the world in writing. I have seen changes since then that have changed my mind, regarding the fate of this book. The world, at large, is still as crazy and nonsensical as it was, all those years ago. In fact, I do believe in some cases things have worsened.
Writing this book took me on a personal journey of self-examination, which I did not anticipate but I am grateful for. I was forced to look at my own prejudices, which surprised me that existed, because I proud myself for been open minded, kind, caring and so on. I had to examine phrases I used without looking at their origin or potential hidden implications.
I do have hope that things will get better and in some cases we, as a collective, are becoming more compassionate, supportive, innovative and so on. I do hope that you enjoy reading this book regardless of whether, you agree with my perceptive and views or not. I also hope that you too, look at your own prejudices and beliefs with fresh eyes.
I would also like to thank all the people who helped me in making this book a reality. To all those who let me into their lives and points of views as well as belief system, I thank you. Thanks and gratitude also to those who allowed us to do the mini ‘experiments’ for their time and open-mindedness.
Finally I would like to thank all friends, family and strangers for the discussions and support.
Special thank you to Elaine Lanighan Photography for the cover image.
Dedication: This book is dedicated in loving memory of Miriam Maccaron’Arroyo.
INTRODUCTION
I had felt an increasing sense of anger and frustration with the world. I had woken up each day to distressing images of death and killings, on television screen and newspaper stands. Where was this world heading? I find myself wondering each day. This morning was no exception. There was another suicide bombing in Gaza killing ten people, followed by a finding of a body, which was believed to be that of the missing thirteen year old girl and concluding with another parent’s emotional plea for the safe return of her missing six-year-old girl. I turned the television off with anger, how could you let this happen? I shouted out loud and broke down in tears.
This had become like a ritual; I would cry, at least twice, each day for the same reasons. The faces of the well dressed but deeply distressed mothers, barely containing themselves as they beg the nation to help them find their missing children, the disturbing details of a brutal rape and murder of a six year old who was once happy and smiling; as demonstrated by either a recent family photo or a home video now, shown as a plastic bag in a police cordoned off wooden area where she was found as she is taken for postmortem: were too upsetting. The mothers and fathers overwhelmed with grief, as they bury another family member killed by a suicide bomb and the stories go on and on.
I was angry with God, for letting these heinous crimes take place. A God that I didn’t believe in anymore but held hope that he will take charge and sort things out one day, so that I can feel safe again. Each day, the hope died and in its place bitterness and helplessness developed. I was not just angry, I was scared of what I was turning into; I had started not to care about humanity! The images that used to make me cry with sympathy and anger had started to feel familiar and worse: expected! Every kidnap and murder, every suicide bombing became just another proof of how crazy this world really is.
However, in a true human spirit of not giving up, I decided to research and find answers to the real reasons why, these things where happening. I researched for a long time through interviews with parents,
