Preface
When we created this cookbook, our goal was to make the most comprehensive cannabis cookbook available. It contains everything you will need to know to start cooking with cannabis, with content that suits beginners and experts. The main aspect of the book is the sheer number of edible recipes, 134 to be exact. You will not run out of edible recipes anytime soon!
The first chapter covers each different aspect of making edibles. We explain everything you need to know before making edibles and answer some of the most common questions about cooking cannabis.
The second chapter is about making five unique activated ingredient recipes: cannabis butter, cannabis milk, cannabis almond milk, cannabis oil, and cannabis cream. These activated ingredients are the base of every edible recipe in this book. Once you learn how to make these, the only limit is your imagination. After these two chapters you will have the tools to turn almost any recipe into an edible recipe!
Chapters three to six are organized by activated ingredients. We did this because sometimes you may have a batch of an activated ingredient, and with the chapters structured this way, you will easily see which recipes you can make with the activated ingredient you have. You will not need to search through the entire book. We then further divided the recipes into six subcategories: breakfast recipes, main course recipes, appetizer recipes, snack recipes, dessert recipes, and drink recipes. These are further organized alphabetically. You can see these in the table of contents. This helps you find the recipe you are looking for quickly!
Thank you so much for buying this cookbook. Our team has worked hard to create the best edible cookbook we could. Without your support, this would not have been possible.
If you would like to get featured on our Instagram, take a picture of your recipe and either tag @thecannaschool or use #thecannaschool on your post! We would love to see your version of our recipes!
We hope you enjoy the cookbook as much as we enjoyed making it.

Everything You Need to Know Before You Start Cooking With Cannabis
Introduction to Cooking With Cannabis
Cooking with cannabis can seem overwhelming at first, but believe us, it is a lot easier than it looks. After you read through our first and second chapter, you will have all the tools you need to make edibles! On top of that, you will also learn important terms surrounding cannabis and what they mean for you. Near the end of this chapter, there is a dosage guide and some formulas you can use to estimate the potency of your edibles!
Wooden bowl with cannabis leaves inside.Cannabinoids
Cannabinoids are a group of activated compounds found inside cannabis. Cannabinoids are what produce the effects that people around the world have enjoyed for thousands of years. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol) are the two most widely known cannabinoids in cannabis, but there are over 100 different cannabinoids in the plant.
THC is the most widely known cannabinoid because it is the most prominent cannabinoid in cannabis and it is the main compound responsible for the psychoactive effects. The second most common cannabinoid in cannabis is CBD and this does not produce psychoactive effects. Over the last few years, CBD has become extremely popular. CBD has medicinal properties, and benefits, without the psychoactive results.
There have been studies showing how THC and CBD interact with each other. For example, studies have shown that people who experience anxiety and stress after using cannabis, with high amounts of THC, can mitigate these effects by choosing a strain with a lower THC content and a higher percentage of CBD.
It is important to understand the difference between the two most common cannabinoids so you can try and discover what is best for you.
Smoking Cannabis Versus Eating Cannabis
When you smoke, or vape cannabis, the heat from the flame, or vape coil, transforms the THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid) molecule into the psychoactive Delta-9-THC molecule. This molecule then enters the capillaries in your lungs and moves into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, these molecules circulate to every area of the body, including the brain. By directly entering the bloodstream, via the lungs, the effects are fast-acting.
Eating pure cannabis does not produce the same effects as smoking cannabis. The THCA molecule must be transformed into the psychoactive Delta-9-THC molecule. In order for cannabis to have effects, we first have to decarboxylate the cannabis. Decarboxylation is the process of heating the cannabis to convert the molecule. There is a section later in this chapter dedicated to teaching you more about decarboxylation.
Once the cannabis has become activated through the process of decarboxylation, it is ready to be used to make edibles. When you eat edible cannabis it is first broken down by the digestive system and then the Delta-9-THC molecules enter the bloodstream. It is then metabolized by the liver, which produces the molecule 11-OH-THC. This is usually referred to as 11-hydroxy-THC. This new molecule is a much stronger version of the molecule Delta-9-THC. Since the body has to absorb the cannabinoids through the digestive system, the effects are much more gradual and last longer compared to combustible consumption. The main difference is the time it takes for the THC to be absorbed into the bloodstream. For example, edibles can take as little as 30 minutes, or even as long as four hours, to be absorbed. This is why people who are new to cannabis can get into trouble. A common scenario for beginners is they eat an edible, and before the effects of that edible take place, they consume more. The problem is the first edible had a delayed onset. If you eat an edible and do not feel an effect, it is important to wait for four hours, so you do not over-consume.
