    Chapter One

    History

The word marijuana throws up a thousand images like rolling a joint, setting up your bong or lighting up some other stoners equipment.  That's how it is nowadays. People in ancient times ate the plant and made use of the seeds for food while using the flower for other critical applications which varies with culture and religious beliefs.

Cannabis has been around for quite a while since 2400 BC when it was noticed that ingesting it relieved pains and gave euphoria ranging from mild to slightly high to users. Its therapeutic value did not diminish through the ages as physicians made great use of it.

Records of the use of cannabis cocktails in India and the Middle East are legendary, and the West is not left out.  Dissolving the plant in alcohol releases the active ingredients thus producing tinctures which were quite popular in the 1700s and 1800s until smoking became the rave in 1900s. The culture of smoking pot in the United States came in with Mexican farm hands, and this new craze spread all over the country.  It is pertinent that we respect this tradition of making use of cannabis in satisfying health and spiritual needs. It has been with humanity since the beginning of time so making a conscious effort to understand the healing properties of the plant will go a long way in attending to the misconceptions forced upon the general populace by the powers that be.

In the US, marijuana was used as medicine until the Marijuana Tax Act came into play thus outlawing the use of the plant. Currently, the only use federally recognized is prescribed THC though some states have been actively lifting bans on the sale of recreational and medicinal marijuana.

In the mid-1900s, the hippie and counterculture lifestyle led to an explosion of food and delicacies never heard of in this part of the world. Mouthwatering bites from far off countries became instant hits to millions of persons discovering new and exciting foods to dine on rather than feeding fat on junk and commercially produced chemical TV foods. Though it is quite hard to erase the stigma associated with the pioneers of this trend, it cannot be denied that they brought to the limelight healthy and organic food that is much needed by everyone.

The legalization of medical marijuana in California opened up the vista to users who can now make use of their plants in ways they have only dreamt about. With the increasing pressure to make cannabis legal and more mainstream, there will be an explosion in the use and appreciation of the herb for a variety of dishes without the chefs and customers looking over their shoulders.

    Effects

Ingesting marijuana either in cooked meals or infusions brings about a durable and longer lasting high. For a lot of ailments that marijuana has been proven scientifically to help improve, eating it is much more effective than smoking it. The release of the cannabinoids is slow and gradual which is a desired characteristic by patients who need to have the maximum dose possible from the plant.

After ingestion, the effects may be felt after 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the physiological state of the user, and if the stomach is full, the effects may be slower in occurring.  The duration of the impact may be as high as 10 hours.

Cannabis has quite many cannabinoids, but the two major ones are cannabidiol (CBD) and THC. Cannabidiol is sedating compound that counteracts the stimulating properties of THC. The whole plant has its use with the leaf mostly used for cooking and infusions and the bud for smoking. The foliage is quite high in CBD hence the propensity that users may feel sleepy or disoriented and the bud is high in THC resulting in a high. When starting off with cooking with marijuana, it is advisable that you begin with small quantities to see how your body will respond before gradually increasing the amount.

If your stomach is sensitive or you have gastrointestinal issues, it is advisable that the marijuana must be in excellent powder form to avoid stomach irritation or other problems. Why does this problem tend to occur? It is due to the morphological state of the leaves having very tiny pin-like structures that may result in your stomach rebelling even after the leaf must have been ground. To avoid this problem as much as possible,  the smallest leaves at the tops of the flowers should be used as they
