Introduction

Ready to grow your own cannabis? Start with this basic guide. This book is a step-by-step walkthrough of the general process of growing a successful crop with a good yield. In addition to this guide, it’s also a good idea that you take advantage of any and all online resources, such as growers’ forums, pages or groups on Facebook and cannabis-friendly websites to get answers to some of your more specific or technical questions.

When you’re ready to get started, continue reading.

Basic Ingredients for growing cannabis

Before you jump right in, you need to gather all the ingredients and materials required to set up a good foundation for your marijuana plants. There are several variations for setting up your growing area. You can customize your experience as you go. What follows are standard suggestions for beginning growers.

Soil

First, of course, you need your growing material. It’s nothing complicated—just pots for soil. However, you have a huge range of soil varieties to choose from. Be careful when choosing your soil. It’s best to stay away from cheaper bags of earth mix because they usually lack proper nutrients and are not well aerated. Aerated soil is important because it allows the roots of the plant to dig in, grow, and develop to their full potential. If you need to aerate your soil more, try adding perlite to your mix.

Granted, there are special varieties of soil designed specifically for growing cannabis. These are more expensive but they come set up with all the nutrients you’ll need to consider during the grow cycle. If you can’t bear to spend more, cutting compost is your best option for getting the highest quality soil for cheap. Just make sure that you stay away from specific composts designed for growing flowers, because they can be a bit too acidic for cannabis’s liking.

A good rule of thumb when deciding where to splurge and skimp is to save money on everything but your soil. The best foundation you can provide your cannabis plants will ensure that your plants grow better and stronger and, in the end, give you a higher yield.

Seeds

Now it’s time to shop for your seeds. Cannabis seeds are available to purchase in most countries and you can order them right from the internet if there aren’t any available to purchase in your area. Make sure you use your discretion if you choose to order online, as not all merchants are trustworthy. Do your research. This is a good time to turn to online forums to find what experienced growers are purchasing and where they shop. Nirvana Shop or Sensi Seeds are two shops you can start with online. Keep in mind that sometimes a higher price tag does not necessarily mean a better seed; you often pay for the brand name in these cases. Make sure you know how long the merchant has been in business. Also try to find out as many details as you can about their varieties and development process. This will help you decide when it’s worth spending more on seeds; if the company stands the test of time or sells an especially high-quality variety, don’t worry about the higher price.

As a beginner, it’s a good idea to start with an Indica variety because it’s usually an easier plant to handle during the growth cycle. Indica strains have a shorter blooming period and end up growing into smaller plants with strong stems and wide leaves. Sativa strains, on the other hand, turn into large plants with thin leaves and can be more unpredictable during the growth process. Their size can double or triple during flowering, which for a beginner can be an unpleasant surprise. If your grow space is too small you won’t get much out of your sativa strains. In addition to that. they have to flower for at least 12 weeks which could make a difference on your bills if you’re growing under a 600w HPS lamp.

Indica’s are usually more predictable and a stronger plant in general, making them ideal for beginners who are still making mistakes and learning as they go.
