    Chapter

    ONE

    Jimi Leroy

Standing in the living room, Jimi looked out at the city. He knew the sight was breathtaking to people who could see. For him, the sight was a white light of nothingness before him. Jimi reached his hand up from his side. He held his hand towards the glass window before him. He felt his hand touch onto the glass.

Jimi felt the coldness of the glass on her fingertips. He took a deep breath in. Focusing on the wind rippling down from the top of the tower. Jimi gripped onto the breeze. He felt the breeze slithering down over the window towards the street below. He kept a hold of the breeze as it drifted down to the street.

The breeze went rushing down the street. Jimi kept his focus onto the breeze, as it twisted and pulled down the street. He felt the breeze going over the cars and people flooding the street. His eyes widened as the breeze took a quick turn. Jimi knew where the breeze was going. He felt the breeze climbing up a tower towards the sky. He felt the broken winds and metal framing from the fight weeks before.

Moving his hand away from the window, Jimi lost his connection to the breeze. His fingertips moved towards his side. He had an idea of where the breeze was going. But a part of him wanted to move on.

Taking a deep breath in, Jimi took a step in. He headed away from the window. He heard the sound of his mother in the other room. The sound of metal rang in his ears. Jimi knew she was putting the dishes away.

Walking across the living room, Jimi moved his hands around. He felt small sparks of the air slithering past his body. The air flowed into the room from small cracks between the glass. Jimi knew a normal person would not be able to feel the air on their skin. He felt his mind drifting away from his body. He connected with the air in the room. Jimi felt the air slithering over the sofa. He knew how far away the sofa was from his body.

Taking a step away from the sofa, he felt the air on his fingertips. The air danced around the room. Jimi headed over towards the kitchen. He made his way past the sofa towards the room. He knew where every piece of furniture was in the room. Jimi made the air in the room pull towards him. He looked at the kitchen island his mother stood behind.

Jimi’s mother stirred her tea with a small black stick. Are you ready for school today?

I think so. He wondered. But I don’t think they're ready for me.

Taking a step towards a stool by the kitchen island, Jimi saw his mother. The air drifted over the kitchen island and up his mother’s shoulders. He felt the air drift over her hands. The air slithered over the cup in his mother’s hands. She lifted the stirring stick away from the cup. Her hand moved the stick towards the kitchen counter behind her.

Jimi felt a chill go down his spine. He knew his connection with the air was lost. He had not felt the air move quickly as before.

A smile went across his face as his hands touched the surface of the kitchen island. Is everything ready?

Yes. His mother lifted her hand away from the kitchen counter. I have a meeting this afternoon with the board. She reminded him of her side of their plan. To go over the cost of the project. Her fingertips touched the edge of her cup. It’s going to require a lot of funds to pull off.

I understand. Jimi let a sigh slither over his lips. It’s a nice dream, right?

    His mother seemed upset. Yea.

Jimi took up from the stool. He moved his hand along the edge of the kitchen island. A smile went across his face. Jimi headed out of the kitchen. He kept his fingertips drifting out from his side. He felt his fingertips touch the wall beside him as he walked.

Walking out of the kitchen, Jimi headed towards the entrance to their apartment. He had gotten used to how the furniture was laid out in the apartment. Trying to remember how many steps he took, Jimi made a smile go across his face. He kept his hand to his side.

Reaching the front door, Jimi rose his hand from his side. He felt his fingertips touch the cold metal handle of the door to their apartment. He took a deep breath in. Jimi twisted the metal door handle to his mother’s apartment. He tugged his hand on the door.

Taking a step, Jimi walked around the door. He was careful not to slam into its side. He walked out of the apartment into the elevator lobby. The door slid close behind him. Jimi heard a soft sound of the door locking. He knew the automated system was functioning properly.

Walking on the floor, Jimi approached the elevator. He raised his hand towards the button on the wall before him. His fingers touched onto the button. Jimi raised his head. He lifted his hand away from the wall on the button.

The button has a light, which shined around its metal edge. Jimi took a deep breath in. He waited patiently for the elevator to reach the floor. His mind raced with many thoughts. Jimi knew he would be able to see Clay at the school. He was nervous about seeing him again.

Looking over his shoulder, he felt someone else in the elevator lobby. Jimi lowered his head down towards the floor. He felt a breeze slithering over the back of his neck. He wondered if the person knew they breathed heavily.

Hi there. Jimi kept his eyes towards the elevator. What’s your name?

He heard the breathing stop. Jimi knew the person was pretending to be shy. He wondered why someone was on his floor. He wondered if the person was deaf.

    Fine. Jimi sighed.

He heard the elevator door open. Jimi took a step into the elevator. He kept his hand onto the metal by the edge. He pressed onto the lobby button. His hand drifted down towards the close button for the door. He pressed his hand onto the button.

Releasing the button, the door closed before the person could come in. Jimi knew he was following him. He wondered if the person was his newest security detail. His mother would want someone to be close to him.

    A watchful eye.

Jimi stood in the elevator. He heard the sound of the elevator passing by each floor. Jimi held his hand away from the metal side of the elevator. He listened to the sound of the elevator in his ears. He heard a soft beep come from the elevator. Jimi knew they had passed a floor. He counted each of the beeps, which passed them. He wondered how long it would take before he reached the lobby.

The sound of the elevator door reaching the lobby made a ringing sound in Jimi’s ears. He heard the sound of the doors slid open. Jimi was surprised how long the elevator took to reach the floor. He thought the elevator would have taken longer.

Walking past the elevator doors, Jimi felt the atmosphere around him shift. He felt the artificial light on his skin, with the real light pooling into the room from the large windows. He knew the real light was towards the main doors. His body felt warm as he walked towards the main doors.

Jimi heard the people chatting to each other in the lobby. He knew there was a couple standing over by the front desk. They were hoping to get a suite up on the upper floors. Jimi knew his mother had say over who lived in their building. He wondered if the couple would get the suit they wanted.

Heading out of the lobby, Jimi heard the door open. He felt the faint smell of the doorman standing with his hand on the handle. He knew the man would want to help him towards the limousine parked by the curb, waiting for his arrival.

Jimi took a step across the sidewalk. He felt a hand touch his shoulder. He felt the firm touch of the man’s hand, guiding him over to the side of the curb. Jimi knew the man was being kind. He felt the air flowing down the street over the limousine. Jimi knew where he was going. He hoped for the school to be simple.

His hand touched onto the top of the limousine. Jimi felt the cold metal top on his fingertips. He heard the door open to the limousine. Jimi guessed the man was being generous to him.

Crawling into the back of the limousine, Jimi placed his hand onto the leather seat. He slid his hand across the seat.

Sitting down into the backseat of the limousine, he kept his head forward. Jimi knew the driver sitting in the driver seat before him, had his instructions. His mother had already told the driver where he was going. Jimi liked how simple his life seemed. He was an average student.

The backseat of the door slid close beside him. Jimi felt someone in the back seat with him. He kept quiet as the limousine began to start. Jimi knew the person following him, was not like anyone else. He wondered if they could even speak.

A smile went across Jimi’s face. He felt his hand touching the window beside him. Jimi placed his fingertip onto the glass. He felt the air slithering past his window. The wind went down the street, pulling his sight along for the ride. He saw the building aligning the edge of the streets. Jimi kept his head up as the building on the edge of the street seemed to be new.

Jimi knew they were driving down where the disaster had happened. He had gotten used to seeing the construction cranes on the lots. He knew the skyline in the city was still under construction from the last non-human who had been unleashed to their world. Jimi knew they had no control over their powers, much like when his powers became active.

His mind wondered as his sight drifted up the side of a building. The wind was weak on his fingertips like back then. Jimi remembered how the world felt to him. He saw the brightness of a white empty world over his eyes. The darkness came into his sight, when night fall came. Jimi headed out of his school in Tokyo. He walked with his classmates. They spoke to each other in Japanese as they each headed home after a long day of classes.

Did you see his face? His funny classmate wrapped his hand over his shoulder. His friend mocked the teacher. Who left their cane by the door?

I can’t believe she tripped over it. His smart friend smirked. It could have broken.

Jimi held his white collapsed cane in his hands. He was unable to see the people who walked past him in the street. He had never seen his father’s face, before that day.

Walking down the street, Jimi heard a commotion coming from further down the street. The sound of strangers screaming had stopped his friend. He had never heard such panic in his life before. Jimi placed his hand onto his friend's shoulder. He was worried about what was going on around him.

A sigh slithered over his lips. Jimi wondered what was going on down the street. He heard the panic erupting down the street.

The people were heading down the street, out of fear. Jimi heard the sound of them coming close to him. He felt his friends heading towards the danger. Jimi went with his hand on his friend's shoulder. He knew the sight would be breathtaking to those who could see what was happening. Jimi guessed the sight was something to be seen. He hoped his friends would be able to explain what was happening.

    He wondered. What’s going on?

It’s… His smart friend's voice was filled with fear. ...a burst.

His funny friend spoke like he was warning them. That’s not possible.

We should hide. Jimi told them. Right away.

He felt his friend’s shoulder tense. Jimi walked with his friend towards a building, which was close enough by. He wondered if the building would keep them safe from the burst.

Jimi remembered the feeling of being useless. He sat down with his back onto a brick wall. He heard people heading into the building beside him. Jimi kept his hand onto his friend's shoulder. He had no idea if they were going to be safe. He remembered how the feeling felt in his chest.

Taking a deep breath in, Jimi remembered that moment. He felt the wind going over his lips.

Exhaling, his breath was different. Jimi felt the texture of his lips on his fingertips. He kept his fingers locked onto the breath. Slithering out of the building, Jimi felt his power beginning to emerge from within his hopelessness. He knew his friends would not understand. He kept his head down in shame as his hand moved away from his friends shoulder.

Clenching his hand onto his white cane, Jimi felt his power growing. The breeze from his breath collected with a stream of air flowing down the street. He felt the stream collecting together. Jimi widened his eyes at the sight of the world around him. He could not understand what he was feeling on his fingertips. He wondered if what he was feeling was the world around him.

The stream of air went over the cracked surface of the pavement. Jimi felt the stream slither between the legs of a stranger’s pants. He saw their clothes rustling in the breeze, which had passed them by. His body kept still as he focused.

Jimi felt the breeze going around the people’s bodies. He knew the burst would be powerful and would take out half of the city. He pushed the stream closer to the source of the burst. Jimi felt the heat in the air growing as the breeze reached the source. He felt the breeze weakening, like the surrounding air was being pushed back.

The air slithered through the heat, disappearing with each foot. Jimi kept his focus on the stream. He felt the air flowing around the body of a young girl. She was wearing a school uniform, similar to the ones the girls wear at his school.

Jimi made the air form around the girl’s body. He felt the heat growing intense with each second. The air became a slither of its original strength. Jimi made the air from around the girl, like a bubble keeping her power trapped. He knew the bubble would not be able to keep the burst from taking out most of the city.

Reaching for another stream of air, Jimi felt one going pass him from the window behind him. He forced the stream of air to head up towards the clouds. The air went sliding up into the sky, heading straight into a current. Jimi felt his mind feeling overwhelmed with the strength of the current. He thought of the natural force of the current, drifting over the clouds in the sky.

Pulling the current down towards the city below, Jimi felt the temperature of the air around him beginning to drop. He wondered how long he could keep the current moving down to the surface. Jimi forced the current to move around the city block, where the girl was standing.

Jimi thought back to the last burst, which had erupted in an urban area. A new reporter's voice echoed in his head. She was at the sight of the crater, which was left from the eruption.

I stand at the sight of Jetto City. The reporter told her audience. Where a phenomenon referred to as ‘The Burst’ had taken out a quarter of the city in a blink of an eye.

She looked over her shoulder at the forever changed landscape of the city. The pause of her voice told Jimi that the reporter was shocked by what she was seeing. He knew the world feared another burst, which could happen at any time.

Millions of people are dead. The weight of her words made a tear slither in the corner of Jimi’s eyes. And thousands are missing. She told her audience. Researchers are unsure what had happened to cause this phenomenon. But they are sure that a non-human was responsible for what had taken place here. It’s still unsure if this was an accident or if what happened was an act of terrorism. Her voices were filled with anger for a moment. Here’s Kat with the rest of the story.

Thank you- Her co-worker's voice took over the broadcast.

Jimi remembered the broadcast was one of the longest broadcasts. He had watched the broadcast for weeks, to understand what had happened in the city. He had friends who moved to the city. Jimi watched to hear if any of their names had joined the missing, who were being shown on the side of the broadcast.

Forcing the current to surround the street, Jimi made the wind make a border. He made a stream of air go away from the current. The stream went through the inside of the current's border. The stream wrapped around anyone who was inside. Jimi made the stream pull the souls who were inside the border towards the out of the current’s border towards safety. He knew most of the people would not understand what had happened to them. They would think that an angle was watching over them. Or that some other force was at play.

Jimi made the stream join the current to keep the world outside safe. The sound of the girl’s scream erupted down the street. Jimi felt her let the heat take over the world around her. She let the heat erupt out of her like a wave.

The heat erupted from her body, making her skin evaporate. Her bones vanished into dust, like she was pulled apart by the force. The heat made her blood evaporate into the skin.

Hitting the surrounding buildings, the wave of heat took the wall. The glass of the buildings erupted before the wave of heat took over them. Seconds later the concrete that made up the walls, evaporated into dust. The dust drifted into the air as the heat raged further down the street.

Flames covered the ground where the ruins of buildings once stood. The dust fell down in the middle of the eruption, causing the flames to smoother. The sound of buildings evaporating into dust made the sounds of the city vanish.

Silence slithered down the street towards Jimi’s ears. He listened as the eruption reached the stream of air rushing towards the current. Jimi knew three blocks of the city in each direction of the girl position had vanished within seconds of her eruption. He wondered if there was anyone in the building, which he had missed.

The wave of heat engulfed the city into a burning blaze. Jimi felt the air getting sucked away from the current, which was keeping the city outside from feeling the impact of the eruption. He guessed the fires were taking pieces of the current away, faster than the dust was putting the flames out.

Covering the block in ash, Jimi felt the temperature of the glass behind his head become warm. He kept his head against the window behind him. He made his hand into a fist, trying to keep his focus on the current of air, which was keeping the city safe from the wave heading towards them. Jimi felt the current moving around in a circular motion. He felt the heat reaching the edge of the current.

Taking pieces of the current away with each second, which passed him by. Jimi felt the wave of heat fighting his unnatural control over the current of air. He wondered if he could call for more air to gather from the surrounding city streets.

Moving his hands away from his sides towards his knees. Jimi opened his hands. He clenched his hands onto his knees. He felt his reach to the surrounding wind, growing.

The breeze going down each street in the city had got his call. Slithering down each of the streets, the breezes went rushing towards the current of air. The breezes gathered around the circular path of the current, keeping them safe.

Jimi felt the heat beginning to lose its strength. He looked over his shoulder at his friends. He knew none of them would understand what was going on. Jimi felt the current erupt down the street. He felt the gust of wind pushing the remaining heat away from the city.

The gust made the heat go up into the clouds above. A sound of thunder erupted from the sky above their heads. Jimi knew the amount of damage caused by the bust was great. He wished he could have acted faster, to prevent the accident from occurring in the city he called home. His hand loosened from his knees.

Jimi felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. He wondered if everyone around him would ever know how close to death they were. He wondered if the girl was someone he could have saved. Jimi had never thought of that before. He lowered his head.

Moving his hand away from the window, Jimi felt lost in connection with the world around him, like back then. He knew the world had moved on from the tragedy, which hunted his brain. His hand touched his pant legs.

Jimi felt like the limousine was going forever. He knew they most had been getting close to the school by now. He lifted his hand up from his side one last time. Jimi was hoping to get the attention from the limousine driver. He smiled in the direction of the driver.

Are we almost there? He spoke with a polite tone in his voice.

The driver tilted his head slightly towards the mirror before him. Yes, sir. The driver spoke in a pleasant tone. We are almost there.

Jimi heard the limousine coming to a stop. He was surprised by how close they were to the school. He let a sigh slither over his lips.

Sorry sir. The driver warned him. It appears that we have come across some traffic.

No worries. Jimi smiled. Thanks for letting me know.

Lowering his eyes down to his knees, Jimi knew the driver was not responsible for the drivers who were rushing down the street. He wondered how long they would be in the traffic for. His mind began to wonder again. Jimi knew his thoughts were flowing around in his head. He felt anxious for the first time in years. He wondered if he would meet Clay at the school.

Jimi felt his heart fluttering in his chest. He wanted to meet up with Clay again. He knew Clay could be any of the ten schools on the island, who specialized in teenagers with abilities. Jimi’s eyes darted towards the window. He thought for a moment. He had guessed Clay was a non-human like him. But he wondered if his assumption was incorrect.

A sigh of annoyance, drifted over Jimi’s lips. He felt trapped inside his mind. Jimi kept thinking about the same thing, over and over again. He wondered how much long they would have before the limousine came to a stop in front of the school.

    Skylar Jackson

Standing in her office, Skylar looked out at the construction site in the north part of the island. She saw the buildings beginning to form out of the metal beams and glass, which was holding together the structures. She knew the construction would come to an end in a matter of weeks.

Excited to have her project finished, Skylar placed her hand onto the glass surface of her desk. She saw her eyes shimmering in the blueprints before her. The blueprints of the north part of the city had made her eyes light up with joy. Skylar knew the blueprints before her, was her gift to the people of New York Island. She hoped they would agree.

The sound of a door creaking open behind her, shattered Skylar’s thought. She glared her eyes away from the blueprints. Her eyes gazed up at the woman who stood before her.

Skylar smiled to greet her. Hi Sue.

Hi. Sue walked into the office with a smile on her face. Skylar. How’s the rebuilding efforts going?

Along. Skylar moved her fingertips along the surface of her desk. We should be finished with the north reconstruction in a week.

Sue walked up to the chair before Skylar’s desk. Taking a seat in the chair, Sue placed her hand up to her chin. Skylar had gotten used to seeing the look on her partner's face. She knew Sue was thinking about something.

And what about that tower. Sue reminded her. The one going up near Hoffman Park.

We finished construction yesterday. Skylar smiled at her friend. I’m not sure what you want that tower for. But it’s live.

Good news. Her partner's voice sounded excited. DINA have a new project in the works. It’s going live tomorrow.

Would this be for one of those hero projects? Skylar tried to keep an open mind. Or for a new research project that my parents have asked for DINA to fund.

Sue smirked. It’s for a project we're working on. Pointing at the wristband around her arm with her eyes, Sue got Skylar’s attention. The non-bands were released before the disaster, a few weeks back. She reminded Skylar about the device. They give us access to everyone’s data.

Including their genetic makeup. Skylar smiled. I know. I helped design them.

Something you are not aware of. Sue made a screen flicker before her band. She pulled up the genetic makeup of her son. We are scouting for our next team of Non-Humans, who can save the world.

If we need saving. Skylar looked at the genetic code before Sue’s eyes. Whose DNA do you have there?

My sons. Sue moved her hand, making her son's genetic makeup go away from her sight. It makes scouting less of a pain.

It’s also an invasion of privacy. Skylar crossed her arms over her chest. And I’m not saying this to sound dramatic, but isn’t it illegal.

You do know what DINA means. Sue raised her eyebrow. Right?

Skylar sighed. The Department of International Non-Human Affairs.

That’s right. Sue reminded her partner. We are run by the government, and all of our work has to do with making the world a better place. For both, non-humans and humans.

Right. Skylar leaned forward on her desk. What are you calling it?

Not sure yet. Sue leaned her head back. She thought about a name for the project. My sons are working on it. What about the new DINA headquarters?

It’s a little behind. Skylar looked at the screens before her eyes of the tower's blueprints. Along with the new Jackson Research and Development Group’s facility. She moved her hand across the screen, dismissing the blueprints before her. We had to put them on hold to make the other tower finish within a reasonable time.

    Cool. Sue smiled.

Skylar got a feeling she was glad about the worlds, which came flowing out of her partners mouth. She knew Sue would want to switch the subject. She knew her partner was a clever woman. Skylar had admired her years, before they
