    Leroy

Waiting on the tarmac at the airport was boring to Jimi Leroy. He kept his head up towards the window. The palm of his hand touched the window. While he waited, he kept his hand up to the glass. He felt the breeze drifting past the window, like the breeze was an extension of himself.

The breeze traveled from the window, down along the side of the plane. Reached the wing of the place, the breeze twisted and twirled. The jets were slowing down, like the plane had reached where the plane needed to go. A little way down from the wings, the staircase had been locked into place outside the plane’s door.

Coming to a complete stop, the plane seemed to have reached its destination. The breeze took a sharp turn left from the door. Heading down each of the steps, the breeze began to break apart.

Jimi lowered his eyelids. The breeze was almost out of range. He could see a faint outline from the breeze’s path, as the breeze drifted over the metal staircase. He kept his eyes closed, trying to keep focused on the breeze's path. Seeing a faint image of the object the breeze had touched. Jimi knew what he was seeing was nothing like being able to see for himself. He saw the way each of the objects were shaped. The way their texture was as the breeze drifted over the object's surface. But the colors on them were not able to be seen.

The breeze drifted away from the plane. Touching a town car parked on the tarmac. Jimi knew the car was awaiting his departure from the plane. He wondered how far was the car from the bottom of the staircase attached to the plane.

Splitting apart, the breeze drifted around the car. Jimi knew the model and make of the car. He was able to see even the engine parts inside. The engine had some kind of problem, he could tell by how the breeze split around the surface.

A slight hole in one of the pipes had him a bit worried about the car's condition. Squinting his eyes, he focused on a dim breeze. He knew the dim breeze was all that remained of the breeze he first connected with.

The breeze slithered over the soft gloved hands of the driver. The driver opened the backseat door, softly with a tug. Slithering between the cracks, Jimi was able to see who was waiting for him in the car. He knew she would be there. She was always waiting for his arrival. At that moment, he wished she had sent one of her assistants instead.

The pilot went onto the intercom to address their arrival. He spoke in a soft and calm tone.

Welcome to New York City. The weather is sunny with a chance of cloudy periods, and the temperature outside is sixty-four degrees Fahrenheit. It’s a nice day. I hope you enjoyed your trip.

Jimi lowered his hand from the glass. He opened his eyes. He rose from his seat. The pilot was nice enough to tell him about the weather. But he knew how predictable the weather could be.

Standing up from his seat, Jimi kept his eyes staring straight ahead. He knew the flight attendants would be by the door. They would be waiting for him to reach them. Each one would smile as he walked past their dolled up faces.

Jimi placed his hands on the seats. He made his way towards the front of the plane, where the door was. He could not wait to leave the plane.

Reaching the flight attendants, he felt one of them placed their hand onto his shoulder. She must have been the new one. He heard one of the flight attendants complain about her during their flight. She seemed to be clumsy and pretty. But people could only tolerate those attributes for so long.

Jimi felt his cheeks beginning to blush. He never liked how other people's skins felt on him. He was not used to people touching him. Jimi wondered if the attendant was going to guide him out of the plane. He wondered if the older flight attendants told her to do it, as a joke.

Keeping his opinions to himself, Jimi let her guide him out of the plane. Jimi knew he could walk down the staircase by himself. He had done it plenty of times before. He thought it would give the new flight attendants some kind of satisfaction, when she returned home. Jimi knew what she would tell her friends, she helped a blind passenger off a plane.

Once he reached the staircase, he placed his free hand onto the cold metal railing. He felt the flight attendant’s hand leaving his. She placed his hand she was holding onto, on to the railing by her side. Her voice was soft and kind of shy as she spoke to him.

Watch your step. She told him. Mr Leroy.

Thanks. He felt old by the way she addressed him.

Jimi took the first step with a stern look on his face. He was displeased by how little of a breeze drifted past him. He was hoping the city would have more of a gust to it, like back at home.

Reaching the last step of the staircase, he felt the driver touching his hand. He thought the driver was odd. Jimi placed his hand onto the drivers shoulder. Jimi guessed the driver was used to handling people with his condition. He wondered if his mother told the drive. Jimi never liked how she would call his blindness a condition. But he got used to his mother's terminology over the years.

Walking with the driver, Jimi felt a slight breeze drifting past him. He knew they were walking towards the car, by the direction they had turned. The driver kept still as he walked, like the breeze was nothing on his skin. Jimi felt the breeze. The breeze was cold and lingered on his fingertips. He knew the breeze would be an exciting stay.

Reaching the town car, he ducked his head. Jimi climbed into the backseat. He sat down in the car seat with a smile on his face.

Moving his legs into the back of the town car, Jimi leaned back into the seat. Buckling up his seatbelt in the process, Jimi looked over at the driver. The driver closed the door.

Jimi looked out at the direction of the plane. He placed his hand towards a drift in the breeze. The drifting breeze went up the staircase. Jimi watched as the breeze drifted over towards the flight attendants. They were waving ‘goodbye’ from the top of the staircase. Jimi took a deep breath in. He looked over his side at his quiet admirer.

You don’t think I could notice you? He smiled over his shoulder at her.

You have always been a tricky one to get the upper hand on. His mother let out a sigh from her lips. That’s for sure.

    Jimi said. I know.

Shrugging his shoulder, the driver closed the driver seat door. He started up the town car with the same stern look on his face.

Jimi thought about the last time he was in a town car. He was in Tokyo, getting ready for the long flight to the Big Apple. He had no one around. Besides the driver his father hired that morning and the flight attendants. Thinking about his loneliness, he realized how detached he had become. He knew it was his own fault. He was the one, who kept himself cages up from the rest of the world. Jimi had a feeling. A fresh start in another city was just what he needed.

Pulling away from the airplane, the town car headed towards the road. Jimi knew other people never traveled in such luxury. His mother and father were powerful people in their own ways.

So. With a smile on her face, his mother asked him a question. How was the flight?

Fine. He looked away from her. A bit boring.

Placing his hand onto the window next to him. He felt the breeze drifting past the glass on the other side. The breeze lingered behind them. Dancing over the pavement before disbursing, the breeze multiplied into many streams of air. The streams were to faint for him to trace. He lowered his hand away from the glass on the window.

You didn’t get my present? She seemed shocked. I told your father to have one of the butlers to leave it on your bed.

Jimi thought back to the morning. He remembered leaving his school, like he did every day. Making his way down the street, he remembered the town car. The car pulled up to the curb. He guessed the gift his mother sent was still sitting on his bed, in Tokyo.

I didn’t go home after school. He told her. They picked me up as I was leaving.

Dammit. She said. Oh well. I’ll just get you one before tomorrow.

Her hands were placed firmly on her knees. Her black pencil skirt seemed to end along her knees. She wore a white dress shirt on. Jimi knew his mother’s fashion style. She had a handbag designed by some German company, Jimi had no idea how to pronounce. The handbag was beside her, taking up its own seat in the back of the car. It was worth as much as most people would spend on an apartment.

Leaning back in the seat, he felt his mother’s lips open. She had something else to say to him. He wondered if she ever stopped.

It’s so like him. His mother whined. Your father has always found a way to make my perfect plans go so wrong. And then, I have to pay for them. Like always.

She seemed to be upset over a gift being left at his place. Jimi wondered if the gift was something important. He guessed the gift was expensive. Knowing his mother, there was a chance it was. He thought of what the gift could have been. The gift was probably a ‘New York City’ t-shirt, which would have a place in the back of his closet, for the rest of his life. He liked wearing graphic t-shirts with unusual designs. But Jimi knew his father never liked them.

Jimi decided to ask her. What was it?

A pass. She used the word like it was something she could not just order. For a launch that DINA will be putting on tonight. I thought it would be a great way to show you the island.

Oh. He knew what she meant.

Jimi was used to going to launch parties for his father's company. He would stand behind him like some kind of fashion accessory. Most of the night, he would stand by his father’s side. Not saying a word and smiling for those who thought it was nice for his father to bring his blind son along. Had become a part of his life in Tokyo. Jimi never liked being a part of his parents world. Most of the people he knew wanted to destroy his parents or wanted to be him.

I was just going to do some shopping, before school tomorrow. He told her. To get some clothes and other supplies.

Don’t worry about any of that. Sue told him. We have online schools here. And I got an avatar made for you already. It was designed by a nice girl at our company. She’ll be at the launch tonight with some of her friends.

Jimi felt his stomach begin to turn. The real reason his mother wanted him to go to the launch party was obvious to him. She wanted to meet one of the idols his mother was grooming. She had many of them prepared for the launch. Jimi knew a little too much about his mother's work. She was the head of DINA, a company whose headquarters were in the head of the city. The company made products to help the study of non-humans, while in the Americans. They would find all kinds of people with powers beyond their wildest dreams or nightmares. Some of them, even Jimi, had a hard time understanding how their powers worked. But he knew about them, most of the world had.

He knew of many people who would line up for an Invisible Girl’s autograph. The heroes his mother's company had made. They were not just movie stars and singers. They would not sell out stadiums or have billboards with their names on them.

    No.

Idols like them were out of the typical media. They made spotlights in their own ways. His mother kept them out of the headlines. Until, they were ready to have an appropriate name assigned to them.

Jimi remembered the first time he saw one. They had saved a train in Shanghai, which was about to go off the rails. It was said to be the fastest train alive. But when it was sent out to the world, the train malfunctioned.

The non-human stopped the train and kept their name hidden. She was branded a day later. They had a suit like nothing seen before. The masked heroes would come in and save the day, one more. But they ended up dying. When it happened, the world saw that they are not immortal.

Some people had sent out a hit on the non-human. Jimi had to guess that someone, somewhere in the world, wanted him to be gone. In the headlines, which followed the non-humans death. He was declared a hero.

Freak was his name. Some news covered the accident and made his real name public for the world to see. He had died. But before he did, he had stopped a building from collapsing.

Not every person was able to be saved. Only a few were able to be reached by him. They were only human after all. They were never meant to be seen as gods.

Jimi asked his mother. What’s the launch for?

You’ll find out soon. She placed her hand onto his shoulder. I’ll get them to reprint a pass for you. She placed her hand onto mine. You’ll have fun. Don’t worry.

    He sighed. Cool.

Jimi hoped his mother did not hear the discomfort in his tone. He never liked going to launch parties or events for either of his parents companies. He knew his mother's company was nothing like his fathers. They had never worked in the same fields. His father was in real-estate, while his mother’s job had to do with heroes.

Sitting in the back seat of the town car, he placed his hand up to the window. He felt a breeze go by. The breeze was strong. Jimi could feel it slithering past the car. They drove down Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn, towards the entrance to New York Island.

Passing a supermarket, the breeze lifted. The breeze went towards a high rise building that was tall enough to catch it. The breeze began to make up speed. It drifted faster down the avenue towards a construction site. There was a new development in Seagate, which was still underway.

Jimi knew they were getting close to
