Chapter
FOUR
Iva Pope
Standing in the South Shore Park on Staten Island, Iva felt a gust of breeze drifting over her back. She heard the sound of the helicopter flying off into the sky. Her eyes looked out at the city surrounding them. She wondered where the entrance to the underground was hiding.
Looking around at the park, Iva saw Leo standing beside her. He was tapping his hands at the air before his eyes, like a screen saw before his eyes. She wondered if Leo was able to see a screen, which wasn’t visible to her eyes.
Squinting her eyes, Iva tried to see if her tiger eyes were able to see the screen. She felt her eyes shift for a moment. Iva saw the world become brighter around her. She saw no screen before her teammates eyes. She guessed even her tiger eyes weren’t able to see that kind of field of vision.
Looking over her shoulder, Iva saw Jimi. He was waiting behind her with his arms crossed over his chest. The rest of the team stood behind him, where the helicopter was. Jimi moved his hand away from his arm. He seemed to be looking at something they couldn’t see.
Iva wondered if what he felt was a cold breeze. She felt the breeze slither over her arms. Iva guessed Jimi was using the breeze to see the park surrounding them. She knew his power was able to connect with him in such a way.
Her eyes looked out at the park surrounding them. Iva had a feeling that they would be heading to a building, somewhere inside the park. The South Shore Park was one of the main green spaces on Staten Island. Iva remembered what her teacher told her before summer break. They were learning about evacuation zones in the city. She had a feeling that her teacher was being paranoid, due to the incident with the Light Queen and Ken Frankson.
Iva remembered how the teacher spoke to them. She stood behind her desk with her hand onto the digital white board before her eyes. She saw how the screen changed. Iva sat in the class with Jimi sitting before her. Her eyes darted over her shoulder. She saw Clay sitting in the seat before her. She was glad to have her friends around her, during this class discussion.
On the screen, Iva saw the map of the park before them. There was a small creek to the southeast corner of the park. The creek went down to another park, which was also a safe zone. Iva had never thought about the park as an evacuation zone. She wondered if they would ever use the zone to leave the city.
Her eyes remembered glancing down at the screen on her desk. Iva saw how they were together towards a building in the middle of the park. She had never thought of the park as a place for them to gather.
Looking over at Clay, Iva smiled. She knew her friend wasn’t listening to the teacher. Her eyes looked over at him. Iva knew her friends were there. She winked her eye at her friend for a moment.
Here we go.
Iva sighed as her eyes glanced over at the building. Over there.
Pointing over at the building, Iva knew her friends would follow her. She wondered if they would understand her. She wondered if they would understand what she was saying by pointing at the building.
Iva lifted her hands towards the building. That way.
Clay’s eyes darted over towards her hand. He saw the building she was pointing at. Iva wondered if he understood what she meant. Her eyes went down towards her side. She knew Clay would understand what she had
