    Chapter ONE

    Jimi Leroy

The sound of a teacher lecturing the class rang in his ears. Jimi leaned back in his desk with a screen shimmering before his eyes. He felt his back against the plastic of his chair. The feeling of the school uniform over his body, made Jimi feel like a fool. He knew the school uniform was a symbol of his family's states on the island.

Paying no attention to the teacher standing in front of the classroom, Jimi kept his fingers locked together over the surface of his desk. He heard the teacher say the same lecture the day before. His mind wondered how much his mother was paying the school, to teach him the same lessons each day.

Letting his mind wonder, Jimi felt his thoughts becoming distracted. He thought back to what happened the day before.

Jimi remembered standing in the middle of the training room. He heard the sound of Clay’s voice in his ears. He yelled at him to duck his head.

Moving his head down, Jimi remembered the feeling of an object brushing over the top of his head. He moved his hands before his face. The feeling of an object hitting his hands, made him sigh. Jimi lifted his head as his hands went out towards the object that went over him. He felt no connection with the world around him. His ears heard the sound of the object touching the pavement.

Iva cried out from across the simulated street. Her voice rang in Jimi’s ears. He listened to her voice as an eruption of lightning went shooting out of her fingertips. Iva made her hands into fist as the lighting struck a man running towards her. She lifted her hands up to her face, to protect herself.

The man punched Iva, making a loud thud before sending her down the street. Jimi’s eyes widened. He was surprised for a non-human to hit her with such strength. He wondered if the mob of civilians were too much for them to handle.

Jimi decided to check in with Skylar. He held his fingertip up to his ear. Jimi hoped she would understand his fingertips as a sign for her to start a line of communication with him. He heard the soft white sound of the communications line being established.

Hey, Skylar. Jimi wondered. What’s going on with the mob?

The sound of footsteps rushing down the street towards him, made him worried. Jimi moved his hands before himself. He felt no connection with the surrounding air. He wondered if the air had listened to his command for a barrier of air to appear on the street before him. Jimi had a feeling that the flowing barrier of air would be able to keep the mob back. He knew the barrier would last for a few minutes.

His ears peaked at the sound of Skylar’s voice in her ears. They look to be pulling back. Her voices sound distracted in his ears.

Jimi moved his hands over to his side. He heard the sound of stone erupting up from the ground. The feeling of a cold shadow being cast down onto his body. The cold feeling of the shadow made Jimi realize someone jumping over his head. He heard the sound of the street cracking open before him.

The sound of stone erupting up from the street before them, echoed in Jimi’s ears. He heard the sound of the stone rippling down the street. He knew the stone of the street went rippling further away from the street. Jimi heard the sound of people losing their grip on the street. He wondered how many people on the street were still standing. The people in the street trembled in fear as the stone below their feet became unstable.

Listening to the sound of footsteps sneaking up to his side. Jimi moved his hands over to the sound. He sent out a burst of air from his fingertips. He heard the sound of the air contacting the body of a stranger, who was charging towards him.

The sound of the stranger’s back hitting a glass window, echoed in Jimi’s ears. He had a feeling that the mob would start sneaking up behind him. He rose his fingertips back up to his ear.

Jimi asked Skylar. Why didn’t you warn me about the guy I just flung into the building?

Because you’re out of my view. Skylar’s voices sound distracted to him. Take a step to your right and you’ll be back in the camera's sight.

Ok. Jimi took a step to his right. Can you see me now?

    Yes. She smirked. Perfect.

Clay shouted. Can we be restricted now?

Iva tried to keep her cool. Yeah, I think the boys are getting tired. She snickered as another eruption of lightning shot out of her fingertips. By the way. She told Skylar. I’m not able to shapeshift my form, in this simulation.

Jimi sighed. Yeah, it's hard for me to connect to the air to see what’s around this digital space.

I’ll make notes of everything. The sound of the world around them flickering away, rippled into Jimi’s ears as Skylar said. Leo will need to make the improvements himself, once he gets a break from school?

The sound of the simulation ending, made a smile go across Jimi’s face. He liked being able to train with his team, without having to leave the tower. He had a feeling Skylar was impressed with the technology as well. Jimi lifted his hands towards his head. He felt the clean texture of a small device, which wrapped around his head.

Pulling the device away from his head, Jimi let out a sigh. He kept the device in his hand as he walked towards the entrance of the room. Jimi was glad to feel the air slithering around his hands. He knew the device had transported him into a simulation of a real world event.

Clay sighed. You think that a virtual training room would be more fun. He moved his hands up to the top of his head. Like, come on. He pulled the device off of his head. Couldn’t we have been on a beach, or something?

That sounds more like a vacation. Iva pulled the device away from her eyes. She lifted the device away from her head. Clay, the key word you're forgetting, is training. She sighed. It’s not supposed to be fun.

Standing in the corner of the room, Skylar moved her hands over a screen hovering before her eyes. She took a step away from the wall, which she found herself leaning up again. Her arms crossed over her chest.

A sigh slithered over Skylar’s lips. You guys took out several of the civilians, which made the mob become more aggressive.

Oh. Jimi wondered. We weren’t supposed to defence ourselves.

Some people would say that by defending your selves. She tried to explain. You guys helped fuel the violent behaviour of the mob. Skylar reminded them. Making the civilians more aggressive.

Lowering his head, Jimi felt his guilt for hitting the civilians. He knew the civilians in the simulation were fake. Jimi wondered if there was another way for them to contain the incident. He darted his eyes over in Skylar’s directions.

He wondered. What should’ve we done?

I’m not sure. Skylar said. Maybe, we’ll find out next time.

She swiped her hand before her eyes, dismissing the screen controlling the simulation. Skylar headed across the room towards Jimi. She kept her eyes looking down at the floor as her mind drifted into a deep thought.

Listening to her footsteps on the tiled floor of the training room. Jimi wondered what was bothering her. He knew Skylar had a whole company she needed to run. He wondered if she needed some time to catch up on what her company had been up to.

Skylar let out a sigh. The real reason for that simulation was because of the riot last week. She stood in the middle of the room. Because of Lei taking off the top of the David N Dinkins Building in Manhattan, the public have become uneasy about non-humans.

Ok. Iva crossed her arms over her chest. But why are we training to intervene with a riot. Her breath slithered over her lips. I thought that’s why the police existed.

We have to be prepared for everything. Skylar shrugged her shoulders. Who knows what will happen the next time we go out.

Skylar’s right. Jimi interrupted her. We don’t know if the public will see use as their heroes. He sighed. We all know what happened to the Royals before us.

Clay held a confused look on his face. What do you mean? He looked around the room as everyone’s wandering eyes. Jimi had a feeling Clay was being serious. What? He reminded them. Was it something I said?

Skylar asked. How do you not know about the Royals?

I grew up in the confederation. Clay admitted with his eyes held in shame. I grew up thinking that the world was nothing but a wasteland, beyond the wall.

Wow. Jimi sighed. Sounds like it was tough.

Yeah. Clay admitted to them. But it's strange. When that’s all you know, you don’t feel the need to question what you’re told.

Anyways. Iva explained. The royals were a group of individuals with powers. Who were run by DINA, just like us. The sound of her voice darted towards Jimi’s direction. They were heroes and admired by many people.

Skylar admitted. I still have my action figure collection of them in my bedroom closet. She saw the smirk on Iva’s face. What? She crossed her arms over her chest. They were a big part of my childhood.

The whole country was crazy for them. Iva sighed. I even have a series of comic books about their adventures. She admitted. They’re overly exaggerated, but that’s not the point. Iva tried to get her attention back to what happened to them. Anyways, what was I saying?

Clay told her. You were saying about how people admired them.

Yes. Iva tilted her head down. People did, and then they didn’t.

Skylar told him. No one really knows why. But one day, the royals went rouge. It was the last straw, which the government needed to make them criminals.

My mother was one of them. Iva admitted to him. She doesn’t like to talk about what happened.

I wouldn’t blame her. Jimi told her. It’s hard to get over, the whole world turning on you. I don’t know what I would do, if this place was closed.

Talking about this place. Skylar wondered. Do you know how your mother got the program back up and running.

Well. Jimi nervously placed his hand up to the back of his neck. It was my idea. After what Shiloh did, five weeks ago, it wasn't. We pitched the idea as a way for individuals with powers with a high risk of causing violence acts, to adapt with their powers. We plan on this whole tower being the facility, with a non-human youth centre, for new non-humans to learn about their powers. But we have awhile before that gets up and running. Especially with what’s going on now.

So. Skylar sighed. We were the test?

Jimi shrugged his shoulders. Pretty much.

Skylar nodded her head. Not bad.

Thanks. Jimi slid his hand back down to the side of his jeans. So, how did we do?

Alright. She shrugged her shoulders. For the first time in the program. Skylar told him. But we differently have some issues, which we still need to work out.

Heading towards Jimi, Skylar walked away from the middle of the training room. She kept her footsteps light as she walked across the room. Jimi held a smile across his face. He heard the sound of each of her footsteps getting closer to him. He wondered if she wanted a moment alone with him.

Walking past him, Jimi decided to walk out of the training room behind her. He listened to her footsteps in front of him. He kept his pace matched up with hers.

Heading down the hallway, Jimi remembered his mind drifting. He was wondering what she wanted to talk to him about. He had a feeling she wanted to talk about the unrest around the city. The feeling on the island had changed over the past two weeks. Jimi had seen the public’s view of the event in Manhattan beginning to shift in direction. He could not help to think about what the unrest meant for the future of his team.

Jimi reached the end of the hallway. He headed into the lounge with his mind wondering. Jimi felt the mood of the room shifting. The sound of a glass touching the kitchen countertop echoed in his ears. He wondered what was going through Skylar’s head.

Is something the matter? He hoped he wasn’t over stepping into her personal life, by asking such a question.

Skylar let a sigh slither over her lips as she pulled onto the refrigerator door. The sound of the door opening made a cold breeze slither over Skylar’s skin. She shivered for a moment as her eyes looked into the refrigerator. She took a moment to make a decision on what she wanted from the shelves of the refrigerator.

Reaching her hand for a bottle of water, Skylar closed the door. I’m not ready to talk about it yet.

Let me make a guess. Jimi held his hand in front of himself to dismiss her. It has to do with something you said to Sandra?

I wish. Skylar sighed as she walked away from the refrigerator. That would be easy, compared to this.

Well. Jimi placed his hand onto the kitchen counter. I’m here, if you want to talk.

    Skylar said. It’s nothing.

Twisting the bottle cap in her fingertips, Skylar released the water. She tilted her hand making the water pour into the glass before her. She stared at the water as it danced around the glass.

The sound of the bottle touching the surface of the countertop, charmed across the room. Jimi was impressed by how silent the room had become. He had gotten used to the lounge being the noisiest out of all the rooms in the entire building.

He let a smile go across his face. If you're not going to talk. Jimi sat onto a stool before the kitchen counter. Then, I will.

Sure. Skylar lifted the glass up from the kitchen counter. She held the glass before her lips. Knock yourself out.

My mother. Jimi told her. She’s been working strange hours for the past couple of days, because of the unrest. He glanced in Skylar’s direction. I’m worried that she’s going to assign us to patrol the streets.

A public appearance. Skylar sighed. Wouldn’t be the worst idea.

Yeah. He sighed. But, we didn’t have the same luxury of the last team. He reminded her. The world will know our faces and names.

Skylar lowered the glass down from her lips. Unless we change them.

    Ah. He wondered. Please explain.

Well. Skylar told him. Some royals had masks over their face. To keep the public from knowing their identities.

Sounds like something the ancients would’ve done. Jimi looked towards the kitchen counter before him. But it might not be a bad idea. He admitted. I’ll think about it.

Well. Skylar moved her hand onto the kitchen counter. She made a screen appear before her eyes. I’ve got the Jackson Research and Development Group working on some suits for the team.

    Jimi smirked. Sounds cool.

Sorry. Skylar waved her hand at the screen before his eyes. I sometimes forget that you can’t see.

Jimi reminded her. I get it.

So. Skylar wondered as she placed her glass up to her lips. I have a feeling, that you have something else on your mind.

Well. Jimi thought. If we end up getting involved with the unrest, then we’ll need a public face for our team. Someone who can talk politics and take on the corporate side of the team's public appearance.

And let me guess. She thought. You think that I’ll be great for the role.

Now that’s a great idea. Jimi took up from the stool. I’m glad you thought of it.

Idiot. Skylar muttered under her breath. I’ve got enough on my plate.

    Jimi sighed. Sandra.

Really? Skylar wondered. What about Iva or Clay?

Iva had this whole thing in Panama, which doesn’t make her the best person for the job. Jimi turned his back to her. And Clay’s from the confederation, which some people might find an issue.

Ok. Skylar sighed. I get it. She touched her hands onto the surface of the kitchen counter. I’ll think about it.

Good. He warned her. Because if my mother sends us on another mission, then we might need someone to pick up the role, sooner than later.

Understood. Skylar sighed. I’ll let you know, when I make up my mind.

Don’t take too long. Jimi warned her. Or, we’ll have to make a decision for you.

He walked away from the kitchen counter. Jimi remembered how the room was silent as he headed back towards the training room. He heard the lights in the hallway flickering on before his toes. He kept his head held high. Jimi headed away from the lounge towards the training room, down the hallway. He had a feeling that Clay and Iva had started another simulation.

The sound of Iva’s voice crying out for Clay to come to her aid, made Jimi’s mind drift away from his memory. He knew their training sessions were intense. He took another step down the hallway as his memory drifted through his hand.

Returning to the classroom, Jimi listened to the teacher talking in front of the class. He felt his fingertips onto the surface of the desk before him. He heard the teacher’s voice echo in his ears.

She asked him. Mr Leroy. Her voice sounded like she had been waiting for his reply for a moment. Can you tell us the answer to question ten?

Jimi felt his mind remembering the question she had said. He let his mind solve the problem inside his head. He looked around the classroom in a gaze.

X equals three. He smirked as his eyes stared at the front of the classroom. Right?

Yes. She let a sigh slither over her lips, like she was expecting for him to not know the answer to her question. Now what’s the answer to question eleven?

Jimi wondered if the teacher could give him a hand. Can you read it for me?

Moving his hands onto the surface of his desk, Jimi felt the bumps of the words in the questions revealing themselves to him. He smirked as he wondered if the teacher would stop picking on him. He knew the words to say for her to target someone else.

Why? Her voice sighed. You have eyes, I suggest that you use them instead of daydreaming.

Oh. Jimi knew the teacher had forgotten about him. I guess that you hate your job. He rose from his chair with his hands firmly onto his desk.

    She sounded surprised. Excuse me.

My mother would be thrilled to know that the teachers at this fine institute aren't willing to help someone who’s visually impaired. Jimi smirked at the sound of the teacher struggling with her realization. I wonder if she’ll buy it. He shrugged his shoulders. Or make a pool in its place, after all, most schools are virtual.

Well. The teacher sighed. Can I have your mother’s name? She tried to trap her student, like Jim heard her do with many before. I would like to talk to her about your little burst in class.

Sure. Jimi knew the weight of his mother’s name would make the teacher get off from her high horse. Her name’s Sue Leroy. He smirked. You might have seen her on the broadcasts about the redevelopment of New York Island. He sat down back into his seat. But she’s a really busy woman. So feel free to book an appointment. And also explain that you were unable to assist her visually impaired son, with reading a question, which is a part of your job. Jimi moved his hand towards his backpack. Being a teacher and all.

He stood up from his desk. Jimi slid his hand towards the white cane on the back of his backpack. He held the white cane in his hand. He snapped his wrist, making the white cane assemble to his side. Jimi tapped the top of his white cane onto the tile floor of the classroom. He made his way to the back of the classroom.

The sound of the teacher calling for him, rang in his ears. Jimi ignored the sound of the teacher’s voice in his ears. He reached his hand for the door handle of the classroom. He twisted the doorknob with his hand.

A smile went across Jimi’s face, as he heard the school bell charm down the hallways. Jimi headed out of the classroom. He was impressed that the teacher had not offered for him to have detention for his little show. He felt embarrassed about his outburst in the teacher's class. But Jimi knew the teacher needed a friendly reminder about the elite states some of her student’s family members had.

    Clay Andrews

Walking down the school hallway, Clay searched around for his friend’s face. He heard the tapping sound of a white cane on the tiled floor of the school hallway. He turned around at the sound of the white cane.

A smile went across his face, as he looked down the hallway. His friend walked proudly with his white cane tapping into the tiles before his feet. Clay smiled at the sight of his friend. He waves his hand, gently into the air. He saw Jimi’s head tilt towards his direction, like he was able to notice him.

Hey, Jimi. Clay called out to him as he walked up to his side. I heard that you had missed Stanford, today.

Yeah. He walked up to Clay’s side. I had an interesting class with her.

    Oh. Clay wondered. What happened?

Let’s just say. Jimi held a smirk across his face. "She’ll be a little nicer
