Was Jimmy Cursed or Blessed? - James Deerman Holmes
Chapter I
When Jimmy was about three years old they had company. It was his mother’s half brother and his family came to visit. It was dark outside but the front porch light was on and they were all sitting out there talking. Jimmy went out and was standing on the corner of the porch. The light from the porch reached out about fifty feet. Beyond that the creatures of the night lurked, unseen to the human eye. In the shadows where the light began to give way to the darkness, Jimmy saw an angel walking toward him from his left. He saw the devil walking toward him from his right. They were both small, about his size. Jimmy ran into the house and went to his bedroom. He had two windows in there, one on either side of the room. He turned the light on and saw the devil looking in one window and the angel looking in the other. He jumped in his bed and got under the covers. They won’t see me here he thought.
About a year later Jimmy was playing in the yard when he saw his father pushing a wheelbarrow full of clothes down the road. His father didn’t come back. His two oldest brothers Keith and Kurt and his two oldest sisters, Betty and Kathy were married and didn’t live there any more. There were still five girls and Jimmy living at home. Beginning with the oldest were Donna, Nancy, Connie, Debbie, Jimmy and his youngest sister Carrie.
One afternoon a man came and took Jimmy’s mother and his little sister Carrie to town to do some shopping. They didn’t have indoor plumbing and Jimmy had to go to the outhouse. Upon returning to the house Jimmy found the back door locked. He tried to turn the door knob and it wouldn’t budge. He heard the four girls on the other side of the door giggling.
You had better open the door and let me in,
Jimmy said. They started laughing and one of them said, we’re not going to let you in,
the boogie man is going to get you." The light began to give way to the darkness. The shadows and spirits would be moving around soon. Jimmy had to get in the house now, before they tried to get him.
There was a stack of firewood that his mother used for heating and cooking on the porch. An ax was leaning against the wall next to it. Jimmy went over and picked up the ax and returned to the door. If you don’t let me in I’m going to chop the door down,
he said. No you won’t,
one of them said, you’ll get in trouble.
Getting in trouble was the least of Jimmy’s worries. That was nothing compared to what the spirits and shadows might do.
Jimmy drew back the ax and started hitting the door as hard as he could. After several good hits he had knocked a hole in it big enough to reach in and unlock it. The girls ran and hid. Jimmy found Connie hiding behind a door and drew back the ax to hit her. As he drew it back, Donna came up behind him and grabbed it out of his hands.
Things calmed down after awhile, then the girls gave Jimmy some dark brown powder in a can that they said was Hershey’s co-co. They had put a lot of sugar in it. Jimmy liked Hershey’s co-co with sugar in it so he ate some. After awhile he started feeling sick so he lay down. Then they brought him some chocolate candy and said, Here,
eat some of this and you will feel better.
He ate some of the candy and it tasted good but he still felt sick.
When his mother came home he told her that he had eaten some of her Hershey’s co-co and chocolate candy and it made him sick. Where are the co-co can and the candy wrapper?
She asked. Jimmy dug the can and the candy wrapper out of the trash can and gave it to her. That’s my Levi Garret snuff and ex-lax!
she exclaimed, Who gave this to him?
Every one started denying it.
Chapter II
Jimmy was five years old now and they had moved to a different house about a mile down the road. The house had only two bedrooms but they were large rooms and it had running water and an indoor bathroom. There were four twin beds in the bedroom where Jimmy and his sisters slept. Jimmy had his own bed but some of his sisters slept together. The kitchen was next to their bedroom and standing in the doorway of their bedroom facing the kitchen the back door was about ten feet to the left. The door to his mother’s bedroom was about five feet to the right. About six feet from her bedroom door was her bed. About eight feet on the other side of her bed was the front door.
It was dark in Jimmy’s bedroom and the girls kept tormenting him so he went to his mother’s bedroom and asked, Mama
can I sleep with you?
The girls won’t leave me alone.
Lay down there and go to sleep," she said. Her back was to the kitchen door and she was facing the front door. Jimmy lay down with his back to his mother and facing the kitchen door.
It was a little lighter in this room because of the security light that filtered through the curtains. Jimmy was looking at the open kitchen door when he saw a dark spirit in the form of a man appear in the doorway. His arms and legs were spread apart on either side of the door as if blocking it. One by one spirits started coming out of that spirit and going to the foot
