Hurry up, Carrie.
Jimmy’s voice came from the other side of the bathroom door. I need the kid here now to talk to her parents.
He’d called the parents about the ransom just as I was giving the girl a bath. The parents would naturally want to hear her voice as proof that their daughter was still alive. Just a minute,
I called back. The nervous kid had upchucked all over herself on the drive to this motel.
I'd taken her straight to the bathroom and squirted some bubble bath into the tub. The little girl happily played in the bubbles as I washed out her clothes in the bathroom sink and hung them to dry over the towel rack.

I sighed. At least she’d stopped crying and was happily playing with the bubbles. How long would that last though? Soon she’d be out of the tub and back in the motel room with Jimmy, who seemed to scare her. He’d wanted to tie her up. Idiot. Crazy idiot. He’d gone absolutely nutzo.
I didn’t know why I'd agreed to his stupid plan. The fact that he'd cried, probably. I'd
